I normally read forums to see what works on the table top,
keep in mind key details like: give my guys transports! And then get a pen and paper out!

I mostly use Gear Garage these days, but I'm weird.

Word processor. Easier for me to edit, import, export, and then print off so it looks all neat and tidy

mostly i just sift through the codex looking for points and imagining different builds. Games for me are usually 2500-5000 points, so I leave up to 300 to 1000 points free for upgrades. It isn't that hard that it warrants an army builder program to be honest. Heck, at the most, pen and paper is all you really need.

I use gool old MS excel, the sum function comes in very handy!

As an engineering student, i am always using Excel, found it the easiest way to build and modify list.

I start on Paper with a Pencil usually, for quick scribbles and pointing up, with my trusty calculator by my side, then I'll move onto a Pen to refine things.

Then usually I pump it into Army Builder to get a nice cheat sheet with all my stats and points and that and they make good handouts for my opponent.

normally word, so I can add a fancy table for the stats and rules for each choice i take, means i'm not faffing about with the codex during the battle, though i always have the codex handy, just in case

Pen and paper, but that's just so that my opponent can read it if that's the game. I usually forget it and have to spend a minute writing it out again before the battle anyway. Luckilly, they're friendly.
