Pen and paper is easier because you can do it anywhere when you have an idea.

Codex in hand and notepad open, start setting up pre-set builds that I like (eg. a vet squad with carapace and 3 plasma guns right as the top so I can cut/paste without calculating the point cost several times or memorizing anything). Frequently I will break up my army into "sections" that don't necessarily fight together, but simply happen to be the same number of units. Eg. If I have 6 vet squads and 3 tanks I will make 3 sections of 2 vet squads in a tank so I can just cut/paste the cost to more quickly calculate it. It takes me like 5 minutes to get a basic list started so I can fine tune it. I find it faster than hopping around an excel document adding and deleting entries until I get everything right.

Word Processor, I usually have a rough idea in my head of the army list i'm going to build and using Word Processor just allows me to refine that and display it in a manner I can reference too.

I use MS Office Excel in conjunction with codex. meow

I use pen and papaer for prepared lists but if I need to make one in a flash I use my phone's memo app.

Old school pen and paper. The best method as you can think as you write. When typing you some what go into zone out mode.

Seriously depends if I have time or not. Time I use my computer (generally OpenOffice). If at my LFGS, pen and paper.

I love the app quartermaster, you have to put in the information but it is great and saves tons of time.

I find it easier to use pencils and paper cause I can eek out a good 1500-3000 point army within 15 min.

Pen and paper comes as great second option for me.

I always start on paper unless its Mordheim, in which cause i use the actual Mordheim sheets.
For things like tournaments or a list that I use a lot I make it look fancier on Microsoft Word using a Table.

BattleScribe for me. Easy to use and counts up points automatically telling you when you exceed your points limit. Very nice indeed.

'Pen and Paper'... The good, old reliable way!

pen and paper is good for disposable army lists that you experiment with. For something I plan on using longer, I use a computer, so I can make variations on it.

A simple notebook - with abbreviations and point cost - is all it takes.

Always used to use pen/paper but last year I finally got a computer so it's excel all the way. so much easier for adding up lists and doing the math.

A nice site called Forward Kommander, it's really easy to use. However it only does PP games
