You've just made me far more interested in whats within the new Nids book! I really like that naturalistic monitor lizard style on the Tervigon. Crocodilian rather than Aliens I like it!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. This should do it for the underside details. The way I had positioned the waste to give me a good void to put in the pot belly left the original neck hole fully unused and open. At the time I didn't think much of it, since it was going to get covered up anyway. As I moved away from the first plans of belly and more into arched back, I began to ponder that hole. I conversed with a couple of the guys at the FLGS the other day, and we agreed it was a nearly perfect spot for the Gaunts to come out of. I think it's a much better, more protected spot to put a hole thru your armor to your insides than the large holes on the sides of the body as shown in the picture in the book. So yes, while I wanted to avoid wang jokes with Tervie, sphincter jokes are perfectly acceptable.

Waste joint is all done and extended into the Thorax. I bet half of what I just did ends up getting covered over by the Carapace. Also got his middle limbs in. They're tiny widdle baby Gaunt catchers. Seems like I'm spending a lot of time on a detail, that while key to Tervie's function, is going to barely be able to be seen when done. I'm probably going to have to leave him off of his base just to be able to paint it.
Oh, and I love the third picture. It's like something from a proctologist's worst nightmare.

I want two T-Fexes, I got the Carnifex for the second one early because I needed it's Crushing Claws, and I've got a fair bit of down time waiting for Green Stuff to harden on Tervie, so I figure I might as well get started on T-Fex2 and see if I can't have him recognizable for the same tournament this weekend as Tervie. Since the WIP blog started on the first one with the majority of the main body done, hiding the biggerizing process on it, I figure I'll go ahead and put T-Fex2 in here so you can see how the first guy took shape.
Also just a couple of new Zoanthrope heads in case I have enough extra Green Stuff left over to get their craniums in.

And last bit for tonight. Got the first layer of Carapace in place. Will probably put a thin thin bit of Green Stuff over it tomorrow so I can smooth the surface out a bit more. It's really hard to do on free hanging stuff like this. The rest of it will all have support behind it, so should be much easier to get done nice like. Also got Tervie's "counts-as" Crushing Claws done for enhanced Nom Nom Nom action.
Two questions for your opinions.
1.) I want to put a bunch (6) of Toxin Sacs onto him. I figure he's got to have enough poison that everything he births is getting the effects of it. Where would be good places to put them?
2.) There are three little pits on each side of the thorax and each side of the tail where the Trygon is supposed to have little spikes. I don't want to mess with putting them on, and his legs are win the way for a bunch of them anyways. Thoughts on what if anything to do with the holes other than just filling them in?

I love this thread, apart from the pooper.
I really thought a more creative approach would be considered. Not that I want to put your work down dude, I love this blog so far, it just seems that a) the choice was a little obvious, and b) that doesn't exactly show off your sculpting skills.
I image getting a gaunt out of a sphincter would be very difficult, have you looked at more traditional ways of birthing live young, like mammal genital openings (please let's be adult) or bird or even insect ovipositors?
I actually knew that word without looking it up; wow what a nerd.
Just my two cents of course. Love your work so far.

i really like the pooper actually....seems odd admittedly but those little menacing arms seem so cool. i can almost imagine them dragging a guant out... I did imagine a tervigon like the queen alien though...you know with a massive eggsac. but this looks really good without runing the monsters shape.
Looking great. the holes could have little spikes for extra rawr factor? or it could have little tentacles or summit.....OOH you could have the toxin sacs there?

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

So to answer your questions about the toxin sacs and the spike holes.
a. you could put them on the sides of the tervigon, or green stuff them inside the chimneys on the back. Just an idea.
b. For the spike holes, you can make it look like green or foggy liquid is pouring out, like it is after birth or just goop the tervigon is expelling.

I would put the toxin sacs under the newly greenstuft carapace, ther place is just screaming for toxin sacs al the way around under the plates. It would look nice, a little subdued and more believable to have them under som armor.
And for free hanging greenstuffing like the carapace you did i would glue bent, thin bit of plasticard starting under the the topp carapace to wherever i whanted it to go for added stability when doing it.

Yeah, the pooper's nothing super creative or original, but when I wanted a circular organic "door" it was the first thing I thought of. I wanted it to be something that would close up good, to protect the insides, but look like it would open for Gaunts to come out of, and the little arms to catch them were an idea from a guy at the FLGS. Could I have made something more complex? Possibly, but I don't want to make something more complex just to show off skill or something, an one of my goals at the moment is to maintain Tervie's profile as much as possible, because I really do like his shape right now and wonder why it's never been done by the studio.
Going to do T-Fex2 the same was as the first one. I just really don't like the picture of the T-Fex in the book. The picture of the Tervigon just doesn't really show anything, so I don't hate it as much as the T-Fex. The thing I hate about both of them is the walking on Scything Talons. It's just not plausible for something that large to put that much load onto such a tiny point. I think back to the season of Survivor where the city girl showed up in high heels, and ended up having to walk up the beach barefoot because her heels kept sinking into the ground and getting stuck.
I like that under the carapace idea for the Toxin Sacs. I hadn't yet considered that.
`Nid Ribs made easy in three simple steps;
1.) Smooth out the Green Stuff where you want it to go, getting the general contour and curves you want it to follow.
2.) I used the flat round edge of the GW sculpting tool (one of my favorites) to press in a series of shallow grooves following the pattern you want the ribs to follow.
3.) Use a narrow sharpish tool (I used a crochet stitch remover, another of my favorite sculpting tools) to poke a hole in inside each end of each groove. Angle the hole inwards a bit to the putty between the holes is rounded across the top.
Pretty much done, but feel free to keep poking at it if you don't like something, and if you have trouble with the Green Stuff sticking to your tools, keep a small pot of water handy to dip your tools in (sure, it's over priced, but I love the GW water pot for this because of the wide base).

I don't blame people for the early doubts. That hydrolic carapace lift and hot glue filling looks really dubious when first done. It's a shame my computer was down when I was doing my GUO as he was the development for that method, but he used it on an even larger scale.
