Commander is actually a buffer to the rest. Every 10% he has adds 1% to the rest of the crew (so a 100% commander can make a 100% crewman inti 110%. Add on the ventilation and you'll be 115-116%)

Imo when it comes to new tanks, upgrade gunner and commander first. They are you killing power. Driver and loader are also important but those are more equipment based skills

Drivers can get a bit more speed out of a tank and sustain it better. Commanders increase their spotting distance as well as giving the rest of the crew a bonus equal to 10% of the commander's xp. Gunners reduce aim time, loaders reduce loading time, and radio men extend your radio range. lso you need to watch smaller crews (typically four crewmembers or less) as they will often have a crewmember pulling multiple jobs. An example is in the Leo the commander is also the gunner.

The difference between a starting out 50% gunner and a 80% gunner is huge it seems.

It definitely is Tyyr, I just switched to the Wespe and my gunner went from 80 to 65. It's still an amazing piece of work even if it sights in a bit slower.

I was really dumb. I finally got enough XP and cash to get my new tank 2 nights ago and I wanted the KV-1S since it was cheaper than the KV3. The KV's crew was all 96% xp so I sent them all to the barracks to get retrained, then I sold the KV and got ready to buy the new tank. Oops, I forgot to research it :( So I had to re-buy a new KV, then research the new tank and then I had to make all that money back.
Then yesterday, I finally made the money back, my new tank was all researched so I sold the KV and bought the new one. Then I realized I forgot to send the experienced crew back to the barracks so my new KV-1S was stuck with a noob crew :(
I'd been saving up to get my premium account, so in a rage I used my saved up gold to train everyone up to 100%. Now I won't be able to get my premium account till some time next week, instead of today. Oh well, at least I got my new tank.
I like the 1S a lot more than the regular KV so I guess it all worked out in the end.

I just shoot them, and then drive a bit. Sometimes I get to even repeat that process.
But then again, that is my response to most everything as an SPG.
Ah, the simplicity.

SPG rushing is really fun. Most of the time you'll get blown up pretty good, but you'll get the detected credit and if you're really lucky you'll find the enemy SPG's.
Killed a wespe and a bison using an SPG rush, pretty fun. So if you see a SPG gun off for the enemy position or come gunning straight at you, its me.

Your best bet against a light rush is your own team to not be idiots. If even one or two decent players stay behind they'll eat the light rush and you're golden. If they don't, you're screwed.
I wouldn't pay to upgrade my crew until you hit tier 4 or 5. You won't be in the lower tiers long enough for it to matter and be worth spending the cash on. When you get up higher and its more than 12k XP just to get the new tank, never mind the upgrades to the one you're in you'll be in it for a while so an upgrade might be in order.

Almost every game I play I ask folks to sit back for a minute or 2 and kill the scouts, but it's rare that anyone listens. They just run off and separate and die, then go play another tank. I try and play protect arty, but I just end up shelled from across the board because no one else helps.
The funnest games are when people work together, but those games are so few and far between :(

Have they altered the way they hand out XP? I seem to be getting more games with big XP payoffs but getting less for losses as well.

I've been noticing that too. Sometimes I get a few kills and seem to be doing real well but I end up with 100 or so xp, another game I get my butt kicked and get 600. I dunno how they figure xp at all, seems to just be all over the place sometimes. kinda like their matchmaking

I agree. Used to there seemed to be a rough correlation between kills and victory/loss and XP. Now... I dunno. I can smoke two other tanks, help cap the base and get 200 XP or wing two guys barely leave my own deployment zone and rack up 600 in a win. Or I can blow away two and wind up losing and only get 100 for it. It's just all over the place and all I can really say is that if your side loses you aren't getting a damn thing regardless of what you did.
I am racking up the cash though. That's not much of an issue now. Heck, I'll be well over the amount of cash I need for my next tank at this point, WAY over.

Other things factor into your xp as well. Damaging shots give you xp as well as first spots on enemy tanks. I've had games where I didn't get any kills but I mauled several different high tier heavies and got almost 1.5k xp.

Yes, kills dont mean much of anything anything if all you did was 20 damage to the tank. But still I too am confused by the system. I get anywhere from 100> to about 1000. Sometimes I dont even know how I get some amounts

I think it comes down completely to luck. Sometimes I get more for dying immediately in a winning game than killing people in a losing game.
Also, luck in terms of gameplay. The only reason my first arty rush was successful was because none of the enemy went up the middle, but the enemy arty was all parked there shooting at the sides.
Sometimes your reticle can be 100% over the enemy tank and it can be immobilized when you miss it, other times your reticule can be a mile wide and hit a fast mover.
Its just luck I tell you.

Which just seems wrong to me. It sucks to stick it out and fight as hard as I can in a losing match, maybe even take one or two of them down with me and get 120XP for it then take a lucky shot in the opening charge of the next game, never even fire my gun, and get 400XP for it.

The only random aspect to xp is the average tier of the tanks you are in the match with which determines the baseline xp. A perfectly legit example of how the above 120 vs 400 xp could work:
120 xp win with kills: The average tank across the match is lower tier and lower tier upgrades, a couple kills but with finishing shots only or they were low tier tanks themselves.
400xp loss, no kills: The average tank across the match was higher tier with higher tier upgrades, probablly had a spot or two that a teamate then killed (which gives you bonus xp for the spot)

The StuG III is a huge upgrade over the Hetzer. Much better angle of traverse and far faster. Once had two matches so I need to see how it handles things like sight distance and such but so far I'm glad I blew through the Hetz as fast as I could to get to the StuG.
