It's easy to see where you're coming from. I remember watching some vids on Skyrim, what with all the hype. It looked kind of interesting, but the combat just killed it for me. I played Skyrim at a friend's, and my reservations about the combat were only confirmed. Simply put, the combat mechanics in Skyrim are horrendously bad. That's not to say that Skyrim's a bad game, but if you're looking to play it for any reason other than open world exploration, you're playing the wrong game.

Demon's/Dark Souls has spoiled me, I guess.

You didn't play oblivion or morrowind did you? Skyrim's combat mechanics are fantastic for a Bethesda game

IT LIIIIIIIVES!

Seriously though, someone just handed me a +5 Pyromancy Flame, +5 Queelag Fury Sword, +5 Dark Armor, and a + 5 Black Knight Sheild. How do I proceed from here?

Seriously, he gave all that to my level 1 Pyromancer.....

Slarg, I would say proceed with your build as you had originally planned. Having that stuff is nice and all, but most of it you can't use.

Actually, everything he handed me could be equipped within one or two levels. I've made a few changes, but for the most part I am proceeding with it (Pyro/Sorcerer with the Claymore). I think the only thing that it affected was Armor Choice; already got +5 Dark Armor, and I was planning on going Medium anyway, so meh.

Is it just me or do you find that any PVP with a new character is just pointless because you end up fighting some dude on his third run through of the game?

Also, Forest Hunter Covenant FTW. Nothing like getting indicted after owning some camper dude's ass in the forest

If you're fighting red phantoms (dark wraiths or red soapstone), they're within 5 levels of you, and never higher.

If you're fighting blue phantoms (darkmoon), there is no level restriction if you were indicted (I believe).

If you're fighting in the forest, there's no level restriction, and the phantoms are always a lower level than the host.

Good PvP happens in the Kiln at level 120.

Fafnir, I'm sure that's not true. Today I was starting again and was invaded twice at level 12 by people who were lugging around armour and weapons that I didn't even recognise, but whatever it was, it was way beyond what I had. One had a large, bronze targe-like thing and a horned helmet, the other had a fire bow and what looked like a Black Knight sword.

Unless I missed something, the change was to make the differences (in level) percentage based instead.

Even so, getting gear is more a matter of effort than leveling.

They're within your level range. They just purposely get to later areas in the game without levelling up, get powerful equipment, and then go back to low level areas to harass low level players. It's called "Chicken Hawking."

Definitely not a fan of chicken hawks. I remember I was invaded by one in the depths once. I ended up dancing circles around him and poking the hell out of him with my rapier, but since he had much better armour than me, I couldn't actually hurt him (doing 4 HP per hit). He was even lag switching and I could still reliably hit him (and he couldn't touch me). But he got one lucky hit and killed me. Really sucked.

Also, for those unaware, here's a link to the petition to get Namco to make a PC port of the game. It's at 82,000 signatures now. Within the first two days, it had around 40,000.

Gravelord at Kiln... best place to be one imo.

But then comes that moment when you actually want to finish the game and you can't go into the kiln to find help without getting invaded like crazy.
The only bad thing about kiln duelling, is the number of live players who summon two white phantoms and don't even wait for you to invade properly before attacking. I mean honestly?

It is bad when your level 25 Knight is attacked by someone lugging around Havel's armour set and a Moonlight Greatsword. Most of the time I go offline before I play.

Alternatively, you could play online, but as hollow until the very last moment when you challenge the boss. That's what I do with my weaker character. I enjoy getting invaded when I'm playing my stronger character.

It's pretty much entirely random as to what server you and your friends go on. By using the miracle "Seek Guidance" will reset your connection. Quitting and reloading should work too, as well dropping/picking up your soapstone.

If you're a mage, buy the "Cast Light" spell from Dusk of Oolacile. Exactly what it says on the tin, casts a nice big light above your head that lasts 5 minutes. 3 casts. Between the two bonfires in the Tomb, that's more than enough to get you through the area. Requires 14 Intelligence though, so if you're running an optimized build that doesn't use magic, it's not quite feasible.

You can also get the sunlight maggot through the shortcut to Lost Izalith, but that costs 30 humanity.

Lastly, in the tomb, there's this donkey-cave named Patches (close to the first bonfire in the Tomb). Tell him you're not a cleric. He'll push you into a pit. In the pit, you'll find the Skull Lantern. Equip it to your left hand slot, and you can hold it like a shield. It doesn't actually block anything (which means you're quite vulnerable), but it will illuminate the area around you. On your way out of the pit, you should run into him again. Tell him that you're not friends, and he'll give you a twin humanity, and become a merchant once you leave the Tomb. Sells a few decent items (especially if you're in the Gravelord covenant). You may or may not be able to resist killing him. He was a dick in Demon's Souls, and he's just as much of a dick now.

He doesn't actually hurt you. He just tosses you in a pit. And he does sell some decent items later on. Not to mention, if you talk to him after he pushes you into the pit, and you pick the right answer ("no"), he'll give you a dual humanity, which is useful.

And yes, you get the lantern in the tomb.

You can't beat the Tomb until after you beat Anor Londo, which is after Sen's Fortress. I'd recommend doing the Tomb last. Additionally, the lantern is absolutely useless outside of the tomb anyway, so you shouldn't worry about getting it until you actually need it.

Sen's Fortress is really easy. Just learn the timing of the pendulums, and there's really nothing else stopping you for the rest of the level.

Plot spoilers ahead:

Spoiler:
In order to defeat Nito at the end of the Tomb of the Giants, you need to have placed the Lord Vessel upon the Kiln of the First Flame (either through Kingseeker Frampt or DarkSeeker Kathe, depending on whether you're going with the Darkwraith path or not). If not, a barrier will block the entrance to Nito's room at the end of the level, meaning that there's no way to continue forward. You'd literally travel to the very end of the Tomb only to reach a dead end.

And yeah, I have it down, the only exception being that first one, argueably the easiest as well.

First set of 4 blades, right?

Run past the first two, wait, then run past the second two. Sprint underneath the bridge, so the Snake Lady can't hit you, and dispatch the Snake Man in front of you.

Additionally, if you haven't already, it's really in your best interest to unlock the shortcut. Once you get to the area outdoors with the giant lobbing explossive boulders at you,get to the raised bridge that branches in several directions. You'll notice a tower on one side that's separated because a portion of the bridge fell out. Jump across the gap, run into the tower. There's a knight there who'll sell you various items (green moss is very good). Continue down stairs (very, very, very long stairwell), and then at the end of the path is a key. Return up the stairs, cross back over the gap, and continue forward. In the next room moving forward, there should be two cages. Use the key to open one of the cages, and step inside. Once you've done that, you can use the cages from then on to travel back and forth.

Second set of blades, actually; the one where the Snake Lady is shooting straight down it at you while your trying to pass. Only thing I've been able to do so far is shoot her with spells on the lower part, but then I often get knocked off the path. Just need to practice more.

Also, where in the ToG do you find the Right of Kindling? Before the boss, right?

You get the Rite right after killing Pinwheel.

As for Sen's Fortress, you can beat the entire level without using ranged attacks. For the portion you get stuck at, run past the first set of blades, and keep your shield up. Wait for the second pair to swing, and run on through to the Snake Lady. Start swinging and she'll go down. If you push her back far enough, the arrow trap in the wall will activate and kill her too.
