For the last few months I've been using a rebel Trooper riding a tauntaun from Star Wars Miniatures as a stand-in for my Necron C'tan. Finally bought the offical model, but I was kinda connected to my brave tauntaun warrior! He killed many a space marine and ork!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I once saw a player with an entire Ork list that he ran as Blood Angels. On the plus side, it was completely heavily converted and had everything fielded properly, it was just odd to see Orks being played as Blood Angels.
In the realm of non-tournament acceptable proxying, I've played with bricks as Land Raiders before, it really makes them more menacing IMO.

My friend (who is only just now getting his army together) has been playing an amalgam of models from different armies, since he hasn't had any models and I have three armies. I think the best one was when he made a unit of scarab swarms using crisis suits, wolf guard terminators, and Ork HQs.
Although probably the strangest one was one we made up on the spot. One buddy of mine was playing an Eldar list with 6 wave serpents, but only had 3. So we let him put two killa kans next to each other to represent the model. Boy, facing got confusing after a while.

Indeed. I have faced Brettonian skeletons, Skaven skeletons, Chaos Marauder skeletons, Goblin skeletons and Empire skeletons. Funny thing is, all from the same player.
As for me, I have used pieces of paper for Mangler Squigs, before the models came out and because I didn't have big enough bases.

I'm newer to the hobby, and I wanted to try out a Screaming Bell for my Skaven, because everyone who talks Skaven lists raves about them. So I found a picture online, made an appropriate sized box in photoshop, pasted in the picture. I even added "DOOM BELL PROXY!" in this cool drippy blood font.
Then I sent it to the printer in the upstairs office (from the Mac in the livingroom) and deleted the file without saving.
I forgot to check the DPI, stupid thing printed out full page instead of 100mmx60mm.
