I've faced an Ork 40k army and had a Kult of Speed represented by those (the same army featured un-armed orks, and by that I mean orks with actually no arms, not no weapons)

Empty Flying bases= Wave Serpents
Small Empty Flying bases = Jet Bikes
Ork Deff coptas = Fire Prisms
Black painted flying base = Falcon
The joke was that the eldar were using new technology that made them invisible
And also were trying to disguise the fire prism as not as scary deff coptas
It was a scary army of bases (i won too lol)

That is actually the coolest orkmodel I have ever seen! Thanks for sharing the link.
Our strangest proxy probably were those roundabout 450 choclate dimes (caramel choclate wrapped in foil about the size of a base) that stood in as Genestealers in the big 20000 pts. game we did back in 2nd edition 40k when we were young. ^^
Tasty casualties for sure.

Only thing I can think of are the common bottle drop pods and a couple of paperback books as land raiders( they kept being forgotten about and spent a couple of turns sitting in the middle of the field before the player remembered about them!)
I have seen some sprue'nids on Dakka before, can't find pics though...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

First 40k game against drop pods I ever played the guy was using soda cans (one of which he was still drinking out of), middle of the game his girlfriend comes in takes a swig and walks away with the can. We did not notice until the end of the game.

Oh I've done that. I'm one of two 40k players in the world that doesn't play Space Marines, so I have no Drop Pods. I use Soda Cans as a Spore Pod often assuring my opponent that GW will eventually release a model. I oftentimes forget that the Spore Pod is even on the table and forget the *mandatory* shooting it has.
I have, since gotten to making makeshift tentacles out of excess greenstuff I have from modeling in hopes that I can stick them on a soda can until GW finally releases a Spore Pod in 2017.
Strangest Substitution I've ever seen from other people is several Space Wolves Space Marines consisting of Warmachine models. Their excuse? GW models are too expensive. Wut.

I've had to do some odd proxying in my gaming days.
When I arrived for an Apocalypse game, and realized I had to fill 1500 more points, my SW drop pods got double duty as Raiders, and Thunderwolves became flying, furry, laser-barking Ravagers. :p
Also in the same game, Terminators as Grotesques.
