This one is a classic, a true classic. What I love most about this army is the face that it comes with what appears to be a tickle-me-elmo daemon prince

This isn't a terrible proxy - it's MODELLING GENIUS.
I've been threatening to build an army like this for ages. There was a guy on here recently who was building a Tzeentch daemon army of 'gelatinous cubes' out of melted polystyrene - they actually looked amazing...
These aren'y proxies in my book - they're a fantastic, characterful counts-as army which someone has obviously put time and effort into...

I saw a game being played with a guy who was using the clear plastic GW 'blister pack' covers, ripped off the cardboard backing that the blisters come on, and using them on the table as Eldar War Walkers.
I was quite amazed that someone would choose to play against that.

Proxy of an entire Kroot army as a Tyranid army.
That army apparently also had a proxy of the Tyranid codex being used as the butchery of rules I was overhearing was painful. The player really did not have a Tyranid codex and did not want to check the store's copy as he "remembered it all well enough."
I actually had to stop my game and stare a few times in disbelief, but I did well and said nothing. At least during the game. Afterward I asked his opponent if he understood that Tyranids do not actually work like that. (He didn't - it was his first time playing against them and trusted the other guy was being true.)
Some of it was egregious, like assault grenades and Eternal Warrior, some of it was just silly like insisting on TLOS and complex wound distribution for his Krootox "Carnifex". Most of it I have blocked out in my memory.
Maybe it's just me.

DP = Both daemon prince and another meaning.. Sadly gamers tend to think 'Daemon Prince' when this abbreviation comes up
This proxy covered them both, and was the only thing he could find with the right 'base size' ...
My mind still feels a bit raw from the vigourous scrubbing it received in the aftermath of that game.
I can plead inebriation as an excuse for temporary insanity, right?

PERMENANT PROXIES.
Hi, lets introduce you all to the idea of permanent proxies. Those are prepared terrain bits on bases used as a stand in for anything.
I have 20 and 25mm square bases for Warhammer with rocks and other scenery on them.
They are a permanent stand in for anything. Got 20 spearmen and want to rep 30, then they get a force multiplier by being in rubble.
It even looks ok, even improves visuals up til about 1 terrain base per four miniatures and is passable at one base per two. I wouldnt go beyond that.
|
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. |

I've had several that were memorable. I played a fellow with a vanilla SM army. He had two dreads in the list. One was a pair of centigors mounted on a big base with a bunch of hight altering scenery. The other was a portal on a base. I will say that was pretty neat, it was just strange. His land speeder was some sort of wearwolf model with a burstcannon on top of it's head. In the more upsetting and less interesting I've seen a kanwall list where almost all the kans and dreads were flying bases. An index car representing a predator tank. And the, apparently, ubiquitous plastic cup drop pods.

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Nothing too extreme. Almost every proxy I've encountered has been at least in the same ballpark as the models they were intended to represent, IE, they were still miniatures that were roughly the appropriate size and shape.
The worst I saw are Coke can drop pods, and ages ago in 3rd Edition 40K, when the experimental Harlequin Codex came out, I used some kind of little figure from an anime as a Solitaire.
