Actually, that's one of the things I'm still looking for. The original build came with a magnetized turret to go on top, but the Cambulance is already over twice as tall (3-4x the mass) of a normal nob bike. So I'll save the turret for one of my battlewagon re-builds and am looking for a working emergency light bar from a toy of some sort that I can wire up. So far, all the working versions I've been able to find are far too big, but if I can even find one that doesen't work, I'll get it on there temporarily until I can find what I really want.

I stumbled across these sites. 1/43 is a pretty good size to work with.

Great suggestions guys! I'll take them into consideration.

@Cam: Thanks mate, I'll need those!

How did the tourney go? Well, it was enlightening.

Took my camera to take pics, but in the end all I kept was one. Deployment for my first game. The rest were just completely uninspiring as I'd totally forgotten to take any "action" shots.

Because Thing 2 and I spent the morning helping with a food drive for the Scouts, we missed game 1. The TO's however, generously let us join in the fun late for the second and third games. The tournament was a "White Dwarf" style tournament pattered after the ridiculous armies you'd usually see the staff playing with in the magazine. The main FOC restriction was that you couldn't have two units of anything except troops... and that included dedicated transports. Variants of a vehicle didn't count either (so only 1 land raider for example, no matter what version it was). 1750 pts. What's interesting is that it was the same basic game each time with 3 different deployments. There were a primary objective (holding most of 5 objectives) and a series of 9 or 10 "achievements" that you could claim (but no more than 2 per game and you couldn't claim the same achievement twice, even from different games). Very interesting.

My army was fluffy and not the least bit competitive. I did have a 5-man nob bike unit (that's including the boss) & a dakka jet, but that's where the good units ended. Regular bikes, grot tanks, shoota boys, some kans, a dread and a KFF mek.

First game was against another ork player with a more competitive list. Big nob bike unit. Battle wagon filled with aard boyz. Lootas behind a ADL+ quad gun... stuff like that. We tied the primary (to win the primary you had to hold 2 more of the 5 objectives than your opponent) and picked up linebreaker... but didn't get any other points. Thing 2 chewed through the nob bikes but in the end their warboss and a biker were running amok through the rear of my lines. My nob bikers, untouched... had finally chewed their way through the battle wagon and aard boyz & were about to do the same... but the game ended early. Pic below is deployment. My stuff is in the foreground.

Game 2 was against one of Thing 1's friends (who is a very accomplished player... almost made the Sweet 16 at the Adepticon championships). He was playing chaos with a flying black mace demon thing, hell drake, large bike squad & 70 zombies w/ an aegis wall and quad gun.

Basically the demon was unstoppable. Everything it hit it killed or routed in one or two assault phases. Again, Thing 2 saved our dignity by sending the kans and dread into the bikes & eventually killing them while I sacrificed my entire command to keep the demon off our troop units. Thing two then sent his sole surviving kan charging to one of the 35 strong zombie cultist units that was so long it stretched from the back of the board to the middle near an objective. The kan killed exactly two of them, forcing a morale roll at -2. They failed & ran 7". But even though the front of the unit was at mid table, the back was only a few inches from his board edge (in spite of following up into assault) so the rearward guys fled off the table taking the rest of the squad with them! This allowed us to tie the primary again, even though at the end of the game, we only had a lone dakka jet circling the table taking pot-shots at zombies. Once again, no achievements.

So, it was fun. A nice way to spend an afternoon.

I'm sad to report that grot tanks suck. They're half-again the cost of a rokkit buggies with the only appreciable differences being that they're slower, are worse at snap firing and get a 5+ invul. Now... I'm OK with their sucking as long as the points work out... but 4 grot tanks (including RLs, red paint & boss tank) are as much as a land raider. That's just crazy.

The day did help clarify in my mind what makes a good ork army though. I've written up a list at 1500 & 1750 that I think are about as purely competitive as I can make them. They wouldn't have been legal or appropriate for this tournament of course... but at least I have something down on paper.

Now come on Gits you should know by now Orks can not be calculated and planned and are never strategically thought out. Another game those little tanks will blow away a bloodthirster, it's all luck. You just have to dazzle the enemy with your brilliant looking army.

You had fun. All is well interesting to see how you faired vs daemon/zombie, actually sounds like you coped ok under the circumstances. I understand the grot frustration - they should be daft, but not pointless. A good read!

Been running them as rokkit buggies. They're fine that way. Though I'm considering that they might be more viable if I ran the whole mob with grotzookas... be slightly cheaper and would put out a prodigious amount of anti-infantry fire power... but then that's never been the ork's problem.

FINALLY was able to sit down and paint today. Doesn't look like much but at this point ANY progress is good progress. Got some odds & sods done as well as the cow catcher, chain and some hooks. Rails are in and base coated... not sure where I'm going to go with them yet. The hinge pin on one of the doors broke. Going to see if I can replace it with a brass pin.

Good to be back in the saddle again. Expect more progress soon.

*chuckle* Welcome aboard Dkb! This blog is kind of a mixed bag actually... but I think there's some good stuff here and there.

@Cam: No worries mate, I'll get it sorted.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Hey Cam! Came up with something you might be interested in. Fixed the door very easily without having to change the pin. Turns out that the fit of the pin (probably augmented by a little overflow paint) was just too tight and broke the hinge off the body of the truck. Solved the problem very easily. Put a very thin layer of "Labelle 102 plastic gear lubricant" on the pin (a little goes a long way). This stuff (or something like it) can be found at any model railroad hobby store. It's made for lubricating the plastic gears of model railroad locomotives. It works like a charm. Pins move freely without binding or friction. You might want to give it a try in some of your construction.

Nice work Gits'. I like the white-wall effect on the wheels.

Yeah, if there's something on a model that's going to break at some point, it'll be the hinges.

Good idea, and nice paintjob on it. I like the white on the wheels, looks really surprising for an ork vehicle, and that's why it looks so good.

Give-or-take... Cambulance is done. I fiddled with a few of the extra bits... even added a couple of my own. Now it won't be complete (fully) until I find an emergency light bar for it... but that's out of my control at the moment, so this'll have to do. There are a couple of places I'd like to fiddle with it yet, but that's best done after I set it down for a while and can come back fresh at a later date.

Please vote if you like it.

Just realized that the rust is rather haphazard... some places have it... some don't. I'm in the process of fixing that to give it a bit more uniformity from a logical perspective. Some other things need touching up as well. Lord, I hate the internet...

OK, rust is fixed. Not worth a separate set of shots though. When I find a light bar for it I'll re-post.

There are dark and crusty bits on the blood inside as well as the brighter red parts... let me see if I can find the pic I did earlier.

OK, found the pic. Doesn't show up really well. The stuff spattered across the walls is mostly red but the blood pooled on the floor is largely dark. I could try and take another pic of the interior if you'd like. I would like to "finish" the interior some day... just not in the cards right at this moment.
