When I first began playing Warhammer 40k about three years ago I started with Necrons. With Gauss it says that a roll to wound of 6 wounded regardless of toughness. Since I was new I took that as it wounded and you didn't get an armor save. My friends who got me into the game didn't really bother to check as they hadn't really played against Necrons before and assumed, like myself, that it was a 'perk' to them being bad in close combat.

Needless to say after re-reading my Codex a few times I finally understood what the entry meant. Boy, did I certainly feel silly!

I once had some little gakker try to tell me that DA commander Azrael couldn't be killed unless his little helm-bearer got killed. I wasn't sure, but when he told me the helm-bearer had 5 wounds, toughness 10 and a 3+ invulnerable save, I thought there was something wrong.

Also, because the said gakker couldn't accept the fact he lost these battles in our club mini-league, he actually snuck into our school in the night and altered the results in the book!

A few years ago, I had a friend who said his barbed strangler would automatically kill any infantry it landed on. When he played tau, he said that a stealthsuit could only be seen within 1 d6 inches! This guy left the game to try and be cool.

Playing a small point game with a Necron Lord, 20 Warriors, and a Monolith. I reserved the Warriors to table edge in.

The opposing player looked at me and said something along the lines of "Good game. Want to play again but not reserve your Warriors?". I was absolutely puzzled. He then enlightened me that I phased out due to not having any Necron units on the board. Seven others at the shop agreed with him.

I packed up and left.

That is ridiculous, disguised as not ridiculous. Could you not have just shown them the "are destroyed" line?

The most ridiculous rule was when we misread JOTWW to say it destroyed any units under the line, not models. Bang went several platoon squads in a multi level ruin.

One of the first games I ever played at the local GW store, they let me use their in-house Necron army from the display.

This army included the Deceiver, and the guy who offered to play me used a DA all-termie list.

So second turn into the game I get the charge on one of his units and wipe it out, his turn he assaults it with 2 squads. I use the Deceiver special rule to let him jump out of combat, and the guy insists that now that means the Star-God is falling back despite being Fearless. Another guy watching the game said that wasn't how it worked, but the guy I was playing put up a fuss. He then proceeds to walk my Deceiver off the board. Being a noob I didn't realize what total BS that was so just thought it made very little sense. I was less than impressed when I got home and looked up how the whole thing worked.

I hate it when newbies get ripped off...I had one kid play a whole game believing his marines had a 4+ save, fighting necrons who had 4++ and we'll be back on a 3+. He lost. I then noticed this while passing by on turn 4 and had a go at the kid who did this, who had been playing 'crons for over a year and when I played him he played properly. He then said "he went easy" on him, despite him tabling the marine player that turn. They played a rematch and the marine player won on kill-points 5 to 2. Good for him.

Someone didn't read the rules
Scenario1: Straken was behind cover, I shot at him.
Result: I hit and wound Straken, then the Catachan player takes armour save. Nothing wrong yet. He then continues and takes his cover save then his invulnerable!! Not by accident!!
This is the same person
Scenario2: Gaurdsmen at area terrain
Result: They move to the terrain THEN take the diificult

I had a reverse of this happening. When I fielded my PMs for the first time against my friends, they were completely destroyed by them, mainly due to FnP rendering them largely immune to bolter and lasgun fire. My friends were so pissed (especially when I sprung the Blight Grenades one on them) that they demanded to see the rules for them. Sure enough, everything was in order. They then declared, on the spot, the Nid and Chaos Codex (Nids because one of my friends got shellshocked from a Trygon poping behind his gunline) are the most powerful and broken codexes ever.

And then I showed him Mephiston....

A friend in my group thinks I'm not quite playing my Eldar right, and wants to show me how to play it a little better. I think he's trying to be constructive but is doing it in an insulting way. Since he's kind of insulting by nature, I left it be.

He's looking over things, and suggested that I try running some Guardian Jetbikes using the 6" JSJ tactic to help out. He looked up the rule for Eldar Jetbikes, Close Combat, and Hit and Run, and said "No, I can't find anything saying I can't do it if I assault." I asked him what he was talking about, and confirmed my fears - that, no matter what happens in the assault phase, he can jump an additional 6" no matter what. When I said for sure that I knew it wasn't legal, but I couldn't find the rule, he said, "That's fine, I just won't use it against you."

Ugh. He's part of the reason I'm reconsidering playing Warhammer. He's, ironically enough, one of the biggest sticklers for rules in our group, and is usually right, but stretches things too far when he wants something done - but often doesn't show such leeway for others. It's like one has to break the spirit of the game to get on even grounds with him.

one of my first games, i used one of the stores valkyries. We thought the missiles it had were Large Blast, not the gak they actually are. Bought one on the spot, ordered 3 more from maelstrom.

Went in there the next week with my shiny new valk, ready to lay down some death, only to be told that they'd messed up the rules.

That Firewarriors have a 3+ save, it wasen't even my game. An experienced player was using his Tau vs a new players Orks (he was still learning the ropes of the game and didn't have everything memorised) and was getting beat hard and so he was telling the kid that his Tau had 3+ saves to keep himself from losing. This went on untill I grabbed my Tau codex, flipped it to the page with Tau stats and layed it on the table in front of the new kid with my finger on the real Firewarrior armor save.

I'm not sure if it counts but there ya go

I feel incredibly sorry for you. I hate it that Games Workshop staff claim to know all the rules, but stuff up so many times.

Also, Imbad Ironskull, it certainly does count. I find it incredibly despicable that a few really experienced players use their advantage to make up what they want if they are ever going to lose.

That's actually a pretty understandable mistake to make, given the whole line in the BRB about "ordnance blast weapons always use the large blast template," without ever mentioning that there are non-blast ordnance weapons. Besides, valkyries can be outfitted with MRP's, which are decent, and can be converted into vendettas, which are great...

Here are some that have happened to me (I took these from another thread I wrote in)

“That Defiler is a vehicle therefore my marines are not stuck in combat with it. Oh, and now it’s immobilized so it can’t do anything.”

“I can throw my grenades at you on top of my normal shooting. They are the same strength as a bolter but I use small blast templates instead.”

“That vehicle has no weapons, is immobilized and cannot do anything. It is therefore a KP/ full VP.”

“Shooting attacks are resolved simultaneously. You cannot lash a unit into a bunch and then shoot at them.”

“It doesn’t matter that my models are in btb with another unit I can still attack whomever I want within 2 inches.”

“My WBB always works without a res orb. Even after sweeping advances, power weapons and AP 1-2. Oh, and my Monolith can fire all of its weapons even though the big blast is an ordinance shot.”

“My terminators have +1 W, T, A, have wings, axes of khorne and ride on unicrons” ala 3.5 dex

“I can Waagh every turn. No matter what.....”

“My Leman Russ’ side sponsors have over the 100 degree arc of sight.”

Well you can't do that from the same unit. Were they thinking the entire phase was simultaneous?
