It'd be worth emailing them about, but I doubt they could afford to re-do them. It looks to me like they're just moving on, and apparently have excellent quality compared to the computer models and masters now, that they didn't have with their first models :-/

Will definitely post pics when I receive this so people can see the detail level!

Here today's announcement with first pics of the production cast:
First pictures of cast Manticore / Lamassu

posted January 21, 2011

The Manticore production is moving along quite nicely. As we mentioned earlier, the resin foundry we are working with is setting up a quite innovative workflow which will enable them to produce the Manticore in large quantities in a most efficient fashion. Barring a last-minute issue, we expect the first pre-orders to go out on January 31st. Once we start shipping, our production capacity will be sufficient to ceover the rest of the pre-orders within 5 days.

On the images below, you can see the first two pieces to make it out of the production moulds: the Lamassu head and some of the base elements. We are really happy with what the foundry has achieved.

If you're not quite familiar with resin production, you'll probably be interested to know that although resin has many qualities (high level of details, easy assembly, light weight that allow for outputting larger models, etc.), it is usually a most time-consuming production process.

The moulds are more complex to make than moulds for metal casting, and they need to be replaced frequently.

The fact that our resin caster is in the process of resolving these two challenges means that on top of having great casts of the Manticore, and in sufficient quantities to supply shops around the world, we will be able in the near future to offer you large or quite complex models that could not have been produced in a cost-effective way with metal casting. This is very exciting indeed.

We will definitely continue to produce metal miniatures, but we will probably do more and more large and complex projects like the Manticore in the future.

Only in a non mythical sense

The casts shown are really nice, I'm really enthused about getting my hands on mine. Not sure what I'm going to do about the rider, just to change it around a bit if nothing else

Or maybe they can continue to make their own gorgeous models so we buy from Raging Heroes rather than a competitive company?

The Chinese folks, chosen to cast FW for being cheaper, probably wouldn't understand it anyway

Tick tock tick tock... why won't time go faster? Even after release date there's still that agonizing wait on shipping. Oh well, it gives me time to build and paint the rest of the army. I guess.

1st cast is done! Blog Post

Raging Heroes wrote:Manticore / Lamassu – The first cast
posted February 08, 2011

Here it is! Below are pictures of the very first Manticore / Lamassu resin casts. Maybe it feels the same for you, but as for us, when we see the actual casts as opposed to the 3D renders, it always look a slightly bit more powerful and beautiful than the 3D renders.

The process for creating this piece has been quite a challenging task for our master caster, as he explored radically new ways of creating moulds and doing the casting. Inevitably, doing such experimental stuff pushed him over schedule, but we can assure you that the results are worth it. He showed us pictures of the process (which we are no allowed to divulge), although we can tell you that it opens up brilliant new possibilities for our future projects in the coming months…

But once again, we have to push out the delivery dates out for a few days. However, this time, our master caster is the one who will do the explaining, as we will get an interview out of him in which he will talk to you directly about his work. He tells us that he expects to have the production moulds ready by the end of the week, and the first 50 casts out in the middle of next week, barring any problems.

As usual, we will keep you updated via this blog. Meanwhile, we haven't been idle. Check out our next blog entry on the release of Asharah Anniversary Edition, in stock now!

Seven more images of the first cast of the Manticore / Lamassu here.

Wow, it looks fantastic. And if everything goes just as planned, hopefully mine will arrive right after I finish my tournament army.

Yes, the lamassu is a mount found in the old Chaos Dwarfs army roster and in most of the fanbooks. Raging Heroes does not currently have an evil Dwarf figure to put on it and there hasn't been any indication that there would be one. I think most CD players interested in this model are thrilled about the Lamassu and will look to their own modeling whims regarding an appropriate rider.

Does it have to have a rider? Would it be incredibly obvious there is SUPPPOSED to be one if I left it off?

Mattlov, I am considering doing just that. Will definitely take some pics... hard to tell from the raging heroes ones how it will look with no rider (they all seem to have one on it, or maybe just the ones I'm looking at).

I don't think there's a "saddle" or anything, though... so hopefully it will look just fine on its own!

How have i missed this until now? 0_o

Anyone got thier yet?
Want to see the final product thats being shipped.

However, im leaning towards a few of these.
The quality puts FW to shame, and the price just kicks them while they are down.

The final product is pictured above. They should be shipping either later this week or early next week.

The saddle is built into the back armor so that it just looks like scorpion armor if the rider isn't there. It doesn't have any big cuts or dips into the armor that scream "Rider Goes Here", giving Mr. Kahn Urkan a very wide riding straddle to compensate in that third shot a couple posts up. Besides, it just wouldn't do for a Manticore to not be ridden bareback.

Sweet comparison pics... thanks!

That's a fantastic angle... on thing I've noticed is that the Lamassu head is a lot larger than the manticore one (especially noticeable in the separate parts pic). Will be interesting to see that in person.

Any news of when the model will be shipped yet? It's a fair bit past the 8th and I havn't gotten so much as a confirmation email yet.
