Wow, that 3-hours-Carnifex looks great! I have worked 3 hours on small infantry models and got results not nearly up to that skill level...

I own an airbrush myself and would like to use it more regularly - but I really rarely use it, mainly because I'm hesitant to use it indoors, even with open windows. I just read the last 3-4 pages today so I'm not sure if someone brought this up before, but in what workspace do you use your airbrush? Can you recommend some set-up for ventilation and so on? Would be greatly appreciated!

I use my airbrush indoors all the time and higly reccomend an airbrush booth such as this one :

Not only does it keep the air clean and the paint dust from spreading all over (red is terrible BTW ) but the light breeze helps models dry faster

I was on my weekend D: Back to painting today though!

As for the airbrush question, I only use 20psi so I rarely have enough paint in the air to be worried about inhaling, I just sit at my painting desk with a couple of cloths down to catch any paint that doesn't hit the model, in a room with a window slightly open

No Dysartes, bad. No. Go to your corner.

So today was back to work, I did 3 whole things! Wowsers.

I assembled and greenstuffed this gobbo on squig-

Who was a right pain in the bum but I eventually got him together and he is curing overnight. This is the first showpiece model for this commish, which is my top standard.. I'm rather excited. Myself and the owner decided on him being a dark red/orange trailing up to bright yellow on top, with blue warpaint. Going to be lots of fun!

I got a couple more layers down on these giant wolves-

who are also being a pain in the bum as they really don't take paint well, likely due to their casting resin, and I have to let each couple of layers dry for nearly 12 hours before I can layer over it again or it just wipes off >< That should improve as more layers get down though.. hopefully.

And I finished up 3 tabletop test figs for a small Empire commish-

Fighting battles in your pajamas is a great idea lads, kudos. Seriously.

The wolves most likely havent been washed if they're doing that. Might be easier and more likely for the paint to not slough off if you stripped them and washed em properly. Going from personal experience with mould release agents here. Iirc just painting over that gak never works :(

Aye, they have sadly already been washed and fully degreased, the stuff is just like a mirror.. I have my fingers crossed that I am past the problem now as they took the primer decently, I just don't want to risk it and am staying cautious. The figs themselves are really gorgeous, but the resin is the stuff of nightmares. /shakes fist

I wasn;t so concerned about the odd coloured stuff that was coming out of my nose after painting but having to clean rainbow coloured dust off of all my shelves and models wasn't siting well!

But like you said, I wasn't having the problem at 20psi I was having it at 50 psi when I was basecoating with a thicker mix

I have a similar problem with a FW mini I picked up where the undercoat wont stay on, but I think I've got past that stage once its on though theres no issues.

Haha, if it was 50psi I can imagine there was quite a cloud of paint getting into the air every time you used it, I would have had to use a breathing mask in that case. As it is though, I sprayed pretty much all day today and don't feel like I inhaled anything, but I do need to get a brush cleaner jug so I can spray the airbrush cleaner fluid in without spreading any vapor. That stuff is nasty.

An ultrasonic cleaner is something I have had my eye on for quite a while, for the airbrush also. You can get very cheap little ones but I'm not sure if they would do the job very well. What are you using and how much did it cost?

I know, so much stuff to paint! I'm hoping I am past that stage now too and I won't have any flake off, but I am being extra careful anyway, just incase.

Today I spent a while ( a crazy big while) trying to get a nice strong yellow to red fade on the big squig with the airbrush. It was a bit of a lesson in dexterity but I got his bases down and he now looks like a tropical fruity cocktail, so I seriously approve.

(I am super tired and just went with the first batch of photos, they aren't the best, sorry)

Will be starting on shading and highlighting him tomorrow.

I also got quite far with a Nurgly tank -

Which was only meant to be tabletop but I got carried away with. Needs to have its dribbly nasty parts painted in, some ooze, and metals added. I am now crazy tired and am off to bed!

But while I really like the weathering, I think you should paint some more oil stains on it, right now most of them are on the hatch.....

@logg_frogg and Ifalna: Thanks for the feedback about indoor airbrushing. I've only used a can of pressurized air for airbrushing until now for monetary reasons, and that thing basically does whatever pressure it wants...looks like it's time to pay for a proper compressor and properly adjustable pressure settings!

I think it's cool how you can paint something as bright and shiny as that tropical squig and something as dark, subdued and "realistic" as that plague rhino at the same time. Such different styles, but both look sweet!

PS: Oh, and I agree with MrMerlin about the exhaust pipes. Easily done, but I think it adds so much to the realism of the model!

This is the unit I have been using Iffy

It's pretty much the heaviest duty *home style* unit tha you can buy and it cost me $100 + shipping.
I am quite happy with it but am looking to upgrade to a comercial style unit for approx $130.(similar to this one: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/DSA50SE-SK2-FULL-SET-INDUSTRIAL-GRADE-3L-3-17QT-250W-DIGITAL-ULTRASONIC-CLEANER?item=290604862797&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D2%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8247319298606037777)
The important things to look for when purchasing an ultrasonic cleaner are quality of construction and the amount of control you have. more control over heat and time are essential to getting a good clean!
If you are looking it's worth saving the extra few dollars to get into a small comercial/industrial style unit.
Basically if you aren't spending $100 for a new unit you are probably wasting your money and nobody likes that!

But, now, when someone commissions a tank from you, they'll expect "Tabletop standard" to include drilling gun barrels and/or exhaust pipes.

Ack.. yes. This is so true.

No, I'm going to have to put my foot down, I have to look at how much I'm getting paid and not make this silly, I'd say I've already gone a bit above tabletop with it, adding drill outs is just being unfair on myself and any future clients.

BYW Iffy... speaking of work you didn't get paid for. I loved the artwork you put on the box you sent my orks in. I'll keep and post it. I'd send the next batch of figures back to you in that same box except it looks like it got pretty squished on the trip over-seas.

However... I do remember winning a little contest you sponsored on your blog a while back... trying to guess your favorite drink or some such, the prize for which was a drawing... I'll count the box as my prize for that!
