Really by now I should not be suprised, but I took a sneak peek at the new White Dwarf to see the new Gaming board they want £150 for.
While this is a scandal in itself, see other threads, what caught my eye were the hollows full of skulls molded into the terrain.
By and large the gaming table looks good, but please, why skulls? The shock.
My local GW staff were on hand to help with premade jovial platitudes and solutions, especially for me. I played my part and 'complained' on cue. It is well known to them that I am not a skull fan, I deskull my marines and vehicles are everything not undead or chaos. Easy enough to do as I don't collect undead or chaos.
Anyway the hollows full of skulls come with lids to cover them, or can be filled with putty. Fair enough, ish.

Well, if they have covers to hide them, whats the problem? Me, I think I'll glue the covers on mine. Not too fond of random skull pits.

I'm concerned myself about how they'll look as I'm not a skull fan either, but I think I'll be able to get over it.
Besides, if I don't like it I'll fill them in with green stuff.

I like the idea of fitted covers.
I have never been a skull fan either so I deskull stuff.
It would be easier if GW made everything without skulls and provided optional skulls for those who want them.

There are rumours of alternate modules coming. So if applicable, you could swap put the skull pits even.

I think it's a nice touch they added. Why not? It's harder to make it that way yourself, and it's easily filled in or changed or eaasy enough to place something over it.
But, on a skull-related note, I personally only really hate all the skull motifs on only one army - the Vampire Counts. Makes them feel cheesy to me. The troops are supposed to be the bodies of men that fell in battle. The skeletons and such should be using the equipment that they died with - did every army that died only use skull motifs as their heraldry? What gives? Brettonians use other heraldry besides skulls, same with the Empire.

I think they look good. Easy to cover over with some flock if you don't like them. I will be painting my Skullz( tm) tonite while everyone else is out drinking at Philly parties, or doing Halloween. Sometimes being the boss can suck.
Then again, being the boss got me my gaming table both early and cheap!

I saw a design for a toaster that let you download your own images by computer and it toasted them onto the bread in a dot matrix printer style.

We're probably lucky the entire board isn't modelled on the inside of a flying skull with spikes.

I pre ordered one last month before the price hike. I have been going back and forth about getting it. As of yesterday I was not getting, BUT today is different. I heard it came in my FLGS
I have no choice now. Price $275. I have preferred customer discount that will kick in making the girlfriend happier about it.
I will update when I have my hands on it.

Ok, the boards arrived at my local store toda, and i helped put it together.
1. There are six peices four of which have a hill quarter. Two of the hill quarters have two long 'sides' two have a long and a short side. o two prices only fit with each other along the short sides.
by and large it works however.
2. There are not just pits of sjkulls but isolated skulls elsewhere. In factr gthere are skull on every section, and the odd bone too hear and there, but mostly skulls.
3. There are no covering pieces, in fact the suggeastion was ammended to mean cover it with a terrain piece. Which is not the same really.
These are not really problems, the real problem is.
4. THE BOARD DOES NOT FIT TOGETHER. Because it is clipped together on the underside once you clip two peices together it tends to fall apart if you add a third.
You could glue the board squares in pairs, or build as lip around them, but uit sort of defeats the object of the boards to do so.
5. THE BOARD IS EASILY WORN/DAMAGED. Some corners were damaged on delivery, others are getting worn by the clips when weight is put on the board section edges. Getting worn, on day one. Not good.
6. The underside is quite rough, while it makes the asculpting secure, you can leran on the board, it does mean paintjobvs will get scrstched if you disassemble the board secgtions for storage, unless you wrap the peices in a cloth.
7. With several lack of quality moments of this product £150 doesnt look like a realistic price. Admittedly the board sections look good, it has a wasteland feel to it even without the paintjob. But I would not buy at half the price.
