Has anyone tried to strip paint from Finecast models yet? I've seen a few painted Finecast models on eBay but I remember there being some uncertainty about whether or not they could be stripped.

I think someone tried it and said that Simple Green did *something* to them and made the resin all rubbery and pliable. Certainly the results weren't encouraging. Hopefully there is some other product that will achieve the desired effect without killing the mini.

There's a few threads in the P&M section.

I think that there is some product in the USA (superclean or something) that works fine. There appears to be no UK equivalent :( although some people have reported success using a toothbrush dipped in Dettol (and wearing gloves iirc).

Do not use Simple Green on FineCast figgies. Unless you want your thin parts to warp. I did a Crowe for a friend (we where going to put it in a microwave after just to see what happens...but that is another thread ) and he was left in SG for a week. The sword needed some of 'those pills you see on the internet' and his right raised shoulder guard broke off because I was scrubbing so hard. I couldn't get all the primer off of the cape folds either. The primer used was GW Chaos black. Had a hell of a time trying to get the primer off which I think was the main problem. The paint came off rather well, but if you buy second hand and buddy is a little heavy on the spray.....

I was not impressed and I can only see it getting worse on any figure that has any thin parts, like staffs, swords, dangly bits.

Take all this with a grain of salt, YMMV, IMHO, etc etc etc.

I'd say with certainty that part of the reason to switch to resin was made on the basis of removing resale value from the miniatures.

And with the QC issues at the moment how many people are likely to want to take a risk buying a miniature they haven't expected? That goes for internet purchases as well in fact.

It's not just resale value though, I've stripped my own models more times than I've ever bought used ones, because I constantly change my mind on color schemes or think a paintjob looks worse the next morning than it did when I finished it the night before. So even if I don't buy secondhand from eBay or something they're still fething me over. "Better get it right the first time or you have to buy a new model! lol!" Yeah, I don't think so...

And this right here is the reason Finecast exists in the first place. To give models a shorter lifespan and less resale value. So when your Finecast model finally crumbles to dust after the third stripping you'll have to drive down the store and buy a new. Where as I have metal models that will last a lifetime with the proper care.

The scales haven't fully tipped in the favor of FC for me yet. To me they're still in that same caveat emptor stage that keeps me from buying new operating systems for the first 18-20 months. Sure they (are supposed to) hold more detail and they're easier to work with, but I'm still in the mental stages that make me think I'll have to do more work with them if I didn't get one that needs replacing in the first place. And since we don't have a way to reliably strip them to repaint...

I have high hopes for FC in the future and every time I see a good one (like my son's Trayzn the Infinite) I'm one step closer to feeling good about making a big mail order purchase, but I can't shake the feelin just yet. I just ebayed about four 10 man squads of eldar aspects and rangers cuz I didn't want to chance it (that and it was a helluva deal). Hopefully by the time my favorite armies come down the line again I'll be confident enough to just go ahead and buy the stuff.

Seriously, the thread title needs to be changed to 'Finecast' so it might actually pop up on google. I'm probably not the first to state this. :/

Yeah, I'm with SickSix. If you search for "problems with finecast" you don't even see this thread in the first few pages. If you actually search for "problems with finecrapst" then you get this thread.

Note: Search was done without quotes, quotes simply used here to set search terms apart from post.

Advised to post this for additional horror.

It's a goblin! You can tell, right?

Contacted GW for a replacement, waiting to hear back. It's not that the shot is bleaching out the detail, it's that there is pretty much no detail left to take a shot of.

That gobbo looked like he wandered into 40k and was abruptly hit by a melta. If you've got a replacement on the way you should model him as a casualty.

And yes that is a horrendous thing for that guy to have passed QC.

Well on the "bright side" I picked up Cotaez today from my FLGS couldn't see anything bad from blister, we opened it up and the under side of the eagle hand is missing from an air bubble. I can't believe my reaction was "ok that's not too bad"..... So that puts me at 1 for 3 that didn't need to be replaced.

Just out of curiosity, what model is that supposed to be (obviously, it's a goblin!)? Is it a new sculpt or one converted from the existing metal mould?

iirc that is from the finecast only Mangler Squig.

That is easily the worst cast I've seen in finecast besides the 25th aniv. model.

And worglock says that finecast is fine... under no circumstance is it ok for a company to allow such utter crap out their door.

It reminds me of the couch from this weeks 30 Rock. GW should just do what Jack did and sell them to the government who will use them in "negotiations" with hostiles. Although looking at such a failure of a model should be against the Geneva Convention.

I think one of the pertinent things to take from this is that it is a new model, purposely sculpted to be cast in Finecast and yet still displays all of the terrible flaws we have thus seen so far. Obviously, this is a hyper-bad example but it kind of puts paid to the theory that the Finecast flaws were down to 'teething problems' with the new tech or due to adapting metal models to be cast in Finecast. That such serious flaws are still happening on new models this far after the launch shows, IMO, that there are serious flaws either in the Finecast process itself or that GW are trying to use a technique that is not fit for purpose for mass production on the scale that they need, or both.

I cannot believe that even got sent out the factory to a customer. There is a difference between models with minor flaws, and models that look like they were dipped in a finecast fondue after casting.

To be fair Worglock hasn't appeared on here for some time (unless he is posting under a different user name.. )

That's by far the worst model I have ever seen, someone must really have been having an off day when they put that in the package. It reminds me of the guy in Robocop who drives into the container full of acid..."Help meeee., Help meeeeee.." (before getting run over)
