I personally like John Blanche's art.
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only BROWNRED and REDBROWN.
How about you guys?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Blanche is a fantastic conceptual artist, and he brings vision most fantasy artists don't possess.

I loved the 2000-2001 shift to Alex Boyd, Paul Dainton, and Karl Kopinski. They have their own touches, but provide a strong unity, and tons of atmosphere.

I think GW's artists are their strongest asset.

I like Blanche's work the best out of the GW stable. I prefer his more polished paintings, like the Sisters of Battle cover and that painting of the Emperor in the new rulebook, but I like his sketches as well. They're so bizarre, and have so much energy to them. Blanche really pushes my buttons more than most of the others. Dispite some of the ignorant mockery expressed in this thread, Blanche is well-acquainted with art history and knows his stuff. When he decides to put a couple of months into a single painting it really shows.

Clint Langley's work is also excellent sometimes. Those covers he did for the Inquisition War series were terrific, and he's done several other great covers as well. His faces are always the best part. So expressive and characterful.

I quite like Jes Goodwin's concept art (yes, I have "the gothic and the eldritch") for its clean style. I also like Mark Gibbons' style. There are a few others who've done work I've seen in 2000AD as well, but whose names escape me.

I do not like blanche's work. Yes, he goes way-back in the GW history, but his style is too busy for me.

That Avatar illustration is iconic. I'd never seen this one before, but it's pretty darn sweet: http://www.redknuckle.com/eldar.htm. His special character illustrations in the 4th Marine codex were pretty awesome, too.

Paul Dainton has also done a good jorb with the pointy ears.

Mark Gibbons is good, and he can do any of the GW races with incredible skill. His work seems almost TOO crisp for 40k though, there's some of that grit and grunge that he's missing.

Was it Adrian Smith that did that great piece of all the Space Marines lined up in parade ground style - the large 2 page piece in the rulebook and codex?

My personal favorite was mentioned - Paul Bonner. Incredible work that man can do. His color, his linework, his design - all amazing. He made the orks come alive back in the day, he really was the father of the new look orks before sculpting god Brian Nelson took them in the direction they are now going. There's a comedic and yet very dynamic aspect to his designs that make everything he's done look alive and very dimensional.

For technique I've always liked Wayne England - his work is very bright and fun and worked really well for GW back in the day.

Blanche is a central force in the look of 40k, like it or not. His style is far looser, but it wouldn't work any other way with him. Iconic stuff.

Jes Goodwin is almost single handedly responsible for the entire Eldar race, every mini from like 1990 on all the aspect warriors, the tanks and more were derived from his work. He also did all the superior tyranid stuff and the new Eldar vehicles and the new terminators and all the old cool EPIC stuff.

Theres a lot of great art in the GW team but I think Jes Goodwin is a God!

One of my favourites as well, the artist is called Jim Burns.

I've made enquiries about a obtaining a copy as well but they don't have permission from GW to sell it.

Well, I know some people get "art" and "illustration" confused and that's why they hate Blanche. I actually enjoy abstract, modern, and pomo. I love going to the MOMA whenever I visit NYC. Blanche has his colors, the wild energy of the insane (seen clearly in his depictions of psykers) and is wonderful the first and maybe even the second time. The reds and golds and blacks are great when you see them as well, as they characterize the mood and inherent madness of 40k. However, when you see that over and over, when that's all there is to it, it starts to look formulaic. That he cannot adapt. That he'll post a good piece that might give a minute of reflection - but then beat you over the head with it 50 times. That you cannot see where blues and greens fit into the madness - only reds and golds. Nowadays I see him as being too formulaic to be an "artist" but too rough to be an "illustrator." That is why I do not like John Blanche.

I'm sure there's proper terms for this stuff but I'm only a mere engi student who happens to have some interest in arts and music. If only I can major in them all. :(
