I know. We haven't even gotten to the IG release and here I go and start looking beyond.

Having said that. Really, Whats next?

Is GW going to really try to release 3 codices this year or will it be 2?

If so are there any new rumblings as to which?

Are Dark Eldar really on hold? If so, could that mean back to back eldar releases later? Somebody(I seem to think it was Yakface, but can't remember)mentioned a surprise release in 2009-2010. Could they be sneaking the Eldar up the rotation because they sell well?

The reason I ask is we knew about on IG pretty much 3 months ago so if there is a midsummer dex comming out we should be hearing something about now.

We have a few rumours, but no one actually knows for sure.

GW certainly isn't going to tell us anything. I mean, we don't even know the actual 1st Wave release sched for Guard after a GW Open Day, and that's when they're being 'open' to the public. You can therefore imagine what them being 'closed' is like.

Tau are most likely mid to late 2010. I love my Tau and will continue to use them even if it takes (heaven forbid) twice as long.

I think the current buzz on Warseer is Planetstrike and Space Wolves this year, followed by a mystery codex, probably in 2010. That seems to have a good chance to be Tyranids. DE could be 2010 also, but that's speculation on my part.

Necrons are reportedly not on the way anytime soon. According to sources on Warseer, they haven't started working on them at all, contrary to previous rumors. Likewise, I don't think there's any buzz about Tau anytime soon.

Space Hulk or Planetstrike midsummer maybe both this year.

Space Wolves for the November release.

That's the present rumours.

DE seem to be the most likely race after that as the only other Major faction that needs work is Necrons but we've had more confirmation of work been done on DE. That said it is almost certainly one of those two.

After that we're looking at 2 years away but I'd imagine an update to Tau/Nids (both would be fairly quick as both codecii are quite strong still and the current range of models are fairly comprehensive and good sellers. Basically give firewarriors and crisis suits a re-cut/new stuff, move any remaining metals to plastic, new merc race for tau. Move metals to plastic and probably a new unit for nids) after which GW finally has to figure out what on earth they want to do with the inquisitorial forces. Or they can keep putting that mammoth task off again and go try and fix chaos, either with a total update or with these legion/god specific books that were mentioned.

SW and DE I'm pretty happy about. They're the oldest legal codecii on the shelves (in fact, no longer on the shelves) and whilst, weirdly, both armies are still quite competitive they don't really fit with the current ethos and mechanics of the game. Both armies have a list of rules that now either do nothing ("no matter the odds") interact weirdly with new mechanics (grotesques and their version of feel no pain) or are plain unbalanced (counter attack plus berserk charge means that bloodclaws are now used in a completely opposite fashion to how they were intended and are now superior to Grey Hunters for 4pts less).

Equally they could do with a model refresh. Wolves used to be really big sellers. In fact non-wolves players used to buy them purely to get at the cc weapon sprue that came in the box. A re-cut GH and BC box, new "not crap" wulfen, a wolf guard box (power armour but with a seperate upgrade sprue that would let you add some wolfy bits to plastic terminators) and maybe new wolf scouts would all be good kits. Particularly the first three as they would give some new arm and weapon options for Imperial, some new bodies and bits for chaos and of course wolf players would jump on them like hot cakes. The characters are mostly 2nd ed figs too and ragnar in particular could use a new model.

Pretty much the entire DE line needs to be redone and fluff/image wise they need more work than any 40k army. Weirdly their rules only needs about as much of a tweak as the current tau dex does but GW will probably give them a massive overhaul.

Rumors I've heard is that every existing codex will get an update before another BRB is released. I'm hearing that GW is happy with the system as is. Now that means that this rulebook is likely to be around for 7-10 years if this is true.

Not saying I'm buying it but currently the company is doing fairly well comparitively.

If 50K ends up not being an urban legend there is no guarantee it will be anything like 40K. The amount of risk in capitol to launch something like that isn't in keeping with GWs style if it means that it kills one of their big money makers.

I'll take a guess at the release timeline though, it seems like a fun thing to do.

IMHO, Don't see them coming next year unless it is a precursor or follow-up to a new Eldar Codex.

I don't think I'd hold my breath on a new Eldar codex. Based on Harry's hints on Warseer, it seems like Tyranids and Tau are more likely to be the mystery codex.

My money's on Tyranids for three reasons. One, the current codex will be 6 years old in 2010. Two, I'm sure the designers can't wait to rein in Nidzilla. The army doesn't work the way they want it to. Three, if the codex returns to emphasizing horde or semi-horde play, they probably stand to sell a lot of boxed sets to all the Nidzilla players who own nary a Gaunt or Warrior. The $$$ upside there is probably higher than with Tau and Eldar.

Off-topic
We've been talking it over in our group and we think that they may make a drastic change to the Nids Hive mind. The new BRB really downplays the Hive mind strength and makes is seem that the emporer was able to hold them off easily before the rebellion.

There are at least three Nids players I know that would be totally jazzed if the 'Nids from different hive fleets started fighting when they actually get into contact with one another(Competing over food). Kinda like what happens when two army ant hives with different queens find one another. It would give an excuse for themed armies and a reason to reintroduce ol' one eye and to introduce a couple of other interesting special characters.

On-topic
I think your right about the nids coming earlier. My timeline was more joking than serious. Though I don't think the Nidzilla build is going to go away completely.

GW waited too long on 40k4 in 2004, and releasing 20k5 in 2008 was good to clean things faster. I actually prefer that GW cleanup the core rules sooner rather than later, and a fixed 4-year cycle makes planning a lot easier for everyone.

I really don't think DE is 'cleanup'. The DE codex hasn't been revisited since before WH or Necrons had Codices, or Tau even existed. They are so out of date, and the models are so old and hideous, it is disgusting.

Good comments.

IIRC, Planestrike was rumored for 2008, now this summer, before it was known that Apoc would sell huge numbers. I can't see Planetstrike *and* Space Hulk in 2009 - SH is more natural to move to 2009 tied in with a Nid & SM release.

2010 is kind of a funny year for Apoc, as Warhound sells too well in resin to release as plastic. And Thunderhawk needs to tie to a SM Codex. Nids won't need the love of a for a while, but I'd expect their BioTitan to hit the year after (2011), timed like the Stompa. So I picked the Scorpion as a precursor to Eldar.

BA got a WD Codex to buy time, because BA didn't have a minis sprue to work with, and GW didn't have a full release slot ready to go. Unlike SW who have an upgrade sprue and are easy to redo as a full Codex release.

2011 Eldar, Necron, & Tau timing can reshuffle a bit, but with 6E coming up in 2012, you're pretty much forced into doing these updates at these times. You need to squeeze in a SM release each year, so it falls on BT who hate Xenos. This gives a Xenos themed year. Eldar v Necrons is classic Fluff. Tau are the Fluff successors to Eldar, so they also fit nicely. Plastic Warhound keeps Guard, Chaos, and SM players happy while all the Xenos have the spotlight.

2012 is new edition, and GK need to be redone as Inquisition. DE can finally be redone if not Squatted outright - otherwise, the Q2 window goes to Sisters (I'd assume a WD preview list that removes the shared Inq stuff).

DA wait until 6E for their next update - the 2012 SM update is basic Ultras (again)...

If I was GW I'd go for three codecies a year one being MEQ (You have to look at the money makers hey? - not a fan but it'd work)

2009
Q1 - Apoc wave 3
Q2 - IG
Q3 - Planet Strike
Q4 - Wolves + Marine wave 2

2010
Q1 - Necrons
Q2 - Templars
Q3 - Mission Book
Q4 - Dark Eldar

2011
Q1 - Tyranids (blood angels, vs tyranids in a space hulk!)
Q2 - Space Hulk
Q3 - Blood Angels
Q4 - New supplement or possibly Cod again!

2012
Q1 - Sisters
Q2 - Grey Knights
Q3 - Chaos

Sprinkle in some second waves and apoc releases, and boom you get the release of all codecies, some money makers due to the MEQ, and some nice supplements to give the missions some spice!
