So, I was just wondering, what chaos units do you like and dislike? What are the necessities? What are the models you would never take? Do you like to play chaos un-divided or a cult army? Do you only bring some models if you can bring them in mass? What are the good special hq? What spells do you like from the chaos list? If you dislike a model, then why? Thanks for posting.

I like daemon princes, chosen, terminators, all troop options, raptors, havocs, vindicators, obliterators, and defilers.

I would never take possessed (horrible rules), dreadnoughts (horrible rules), chaos spawn (horrible rules), or land raiders (HS slots best used elsewhere, cheaper).

I play a mix of marks, each squad having an icon tailored to its role on the battlefield.

I forgot to mention before, but please tell us what you equip each person with. It would also be nice to know some tactics you use for specific models.

I don't play Chaos, but one of my foes fields a Chaos Marine army.
I'm not sure of the exact lists he uses, but these always seem to perform well:
Khorne Berserkers in Rhinos (Fast into assault, and kick donkeys!)
Plague Marines (hard to kill - even if he didn't succeed a single FNP roll in the 1st 2 fights!)

Predator provides some anti-tank fire, and then he mixes in Terminators, Defiler, dreadnoughts (For a laugh), Lash Prince, more berserkers.

I refuse to enter a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.

I really miss the old 4th ed codex. I really haven't bothered switching over my old Emperor's Children army to fit the new codex. Its just not the same.

But looking through the codex, easy stand-outs are Obliterators, sorcerers with Lash, and Plague Marines in mass.

I usually play Cult armies myself, and started a complete Death Guard army because of the Eye of Terror campaign.

In this 5th edition I'm looking into fielding a Chaos army led by none other then... Fabius Bile.

Something about the Enhanced Warrior strikes me for modeling. Nothing much more then that really.

I don't really field an army for the sheer killiness of it, I'm usually fielding armies that stand a 50% chance or less of winning.

Right now I play a Khorne Berserker army, led by Kharn. Basically my tactics are run, and melee. It works really well in the 1k point games I am playing with my friends. I can just imagine a fully decked out version of this army, with 120 berserkers. Imagine 480 attacks (total ownage).

I run a Khorne army as well, but you do not want to footslog with your berzerkers, especially above the 1000 point range. Every squad should have a rhino, or, if you really feel nasty, you can take three LRs and get three squads into combat on the first turn. While it is certainly fun to think about all those CC attacks, you have to keep in mind that most of them won't hurt vehicles, and against a shooty armor, you could take some serious damage before ever reaching assault range.

I like to back my zerks up with Terminators (DS or in LR), Chosen with meltaguns, a DP, and defilers.

People tend to assume that to play a good 'fluffy' Khorne army, you can't have alot of guns, but this is false. Run your cult marines as troops, and use your other slots for specialists - tank hunters, deep strikers, and heavy armour.

I can play Death Guard and World Eaters, but usually play a combo of both.
Always Princes as HQ's- lash, warptime or wind
'zerkers w/ p-fist champ in LR and plague marines w/ meltas in rhinos.
Oblits
melta chosen in rhinos

won't use possessed- to unpredictable
no dreads- don't like them killing my own guys
forget bikers- to costly for me for what they can do
spawn- just plain suck daemons- no thanks, just not the same a 4th 'dex

I always take a Greater Daemon, some lessers and Plague Marines. Oh, and don't forget the possessed. Nothing like seeing the look on the enemy's face when I roll a 6, or when I roll 1 and let all my daemons spawn on that rhino full of possessed that just scouted into his line.

Other winners: Oblits, Defilers (if they don't get shot off the board turn 1) and the ever reliable Terminators.

There are equipment issues that should probably be addressed as well.

Noise Marines are good shooty troops with blastmasters. They are also great assault troops, as they still have a pistol and close combat weapon even if you buy the blastmasters. A tactic that Redbeard used often was to run them in a rhino, jump out, filet a unit with the sonic blasters on assault setting, hit them with the champion's doom siren(ap3 heavy flamer) and assault the survivors. Nasty, especially with I5. Noise marines have great utility

Plague Marines are very tough and laugh at small arms fire with T5, power armor and Feel No Pain. Give them rhinos and meltaguns for a good midfield unit that can soak up hits and destroy vehicles. The champion probably doesn't need a powerfist but given their field position it can't hurt and can swing combats for you.

Think about what you want your terminators to do. Combi-weapons are great(plasma or melta). Although they can get a reaper auto-cannon, the ranged firepower Chaos terminators can put out isn't that impressive. Consider using them in a land raider, with combi-plasmas or meltas to taste. The heavy flamer would be a good choice to thin target units this way, especially at 5 points(the same cost as a combi-flamer but much better). Marks are generally too expensive for them but Slaanesh gives you I5, which pairs well with the lightning claw option.

Dakka. You need more of it. No exceptions.

What are you talking about? They're Space Marines, which are heroic. They need to be able to do all the heroic stuff. They fight aliens and don't afraid of anything. -Orkeosarus

Yes to DP, all troop choices, Defilers, oblits, raptors, Dreads(only equipped with 2 CCW) and Chosen squads...

No to bikes, Possessed, termies(personal preference) and Vindicators.....just not enough range and doesn't have the ability to attack like the defiler does.

Good trades: 8!!

Here's my opinion

Things to avoid:

Bikes
Dreadnoughts
Possessed as many people have already said
Havocs (much better options available)
Terminators (Some may get miffed at this but I've never liked Terminators, their 2+ save is great against small arms fire but any heavy weapons team or teams with a plasma cannon can quickly make their points back, or especially a troops choice with two plasma guns)
Marks of Tzeentch: usually you'll be keeping your troops in cover so they'll get a superior 4+ save anyway, and tzeentch costs a lot), daemon princes different of course
Marks of Slaanesh: I just don't see the point, different on daemon princes
Heavy Bolters: I've never seen anyone do anything worthwhile with a heavy bolter.

Things that I don't like but are still good if you have them:

Khorne Berzerkers (I just don't like them but others have had a lot of success with them, their strength 5 charge or strength 9 power fists on the charge is great against infantry and vehicles. I'd mount them in a rhino.
Thousand Sons (I really want these guys to work because I like their fluff but they're far too expensive in points (aspiring sorcerer especially), no weapon options, and their inferno bolts usually just give troops their cover save.
Predators
Vindicators
Chaos Lords
Chaos Sorcerers (I think daemon princes are best, you're basically taking a weaker unit so that he can be put into a squad without being independently targeted)
Raptors (I want to use these guys but in 1000-1500 points games I just have better options :(, they're also insanely expensive at the moment, $75AU at my local store D: )
Plasma guns: these are really good don't get me wrong, but I tend to always roll 1s and get fried :S
Champions: The extra attack and power weapon option is great but when you think about it, a marine with a power fist costs 55 points :S
Greater Daemons: I can't make room for them and I think it's the only time you'd take champions, but they are insanely tough to kill. Unfortunately they don't have wings and you have to dedicate a lot of points to them by making champions :(

Things that I like:

Daemon Princes: can take a lot of punishment and wings gets them where you want fast, though expensive. A good move is to move them 12", use Lash of Submission (2 if you have two princes), and force a squad to get close enough for you to assault them, you could also force units out of cover to hit them with battle cannons)
Defilers: Sort of a love-hate relationship, they tend to die if you so much as breathe on them with lascannons and rockets (mine always explode for some reason :(), but their battlecannon is devastating against infantry if it hits
Obliterators: Absolutely fantastic, virtually an anti-everything unit. They're very expensive in price but you can get around this through converting terminators with green stuff and extra unusual weapons.
Plague Marines: Can only really be reliably killed by double toughness or AP1 and 2 weapons, imperial guardsmen have a hard time wounding them and they're quite good with plasma guns because of feel no pain.
Meltaguns: My absolute favorite weapon, I have two in every single squad I play with.
Chosen: These guys are incredible, though they might look like ordinary marines with infiltrate they can all be equipped with special weapons like meltaguns and plasmas. I equip them all with meltaguns and it only costs 140 points! D:

That's my in depth opinion

Oh yeah and lesser daemons, I like these guys but I just haven't made room for them, but the ability to deep strike beside a friendly unit with an icon is quite good, yet they're easily killed and don't have any power weapons :(
I think chaos spawns are awful, the three wounds is great but slow and purposeful will usually allow most squads to outrun them. Good damage sponges but at 40 points each that's an expensive meat shield :S

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Chaos Sorcerer with a bike/jump pack, MoS, and Lash... perhaps not as "Imma rape your armor in CC *rawr*" as the Daemon prince, but certainly not as obvious a target, either... and that Force weapon can be just the thing to kick wound-allocation abusers in the head.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

I've always wondered whether a servicable Slaanesh lord with Blissgiver could be made. Seems like just the thing to smash multi-wound models if it weren't for his paltry strength of four. You'd think there would be an upgrade, for which you could pay points, to represent the extra strength the lord is capable of, given how far down the path to Daemon Princehood he is, to circumvent this...

Note that you can give a chosen squad 5(FIVE) special weapons if you wanted to, not counting any combi weapons the squad champion may take. They can't deep strike but they do have infiltrate and the option to take a rhino.

Abaddon is the best character. If your opponents aren't against special characters, take him and Kharne, have them ride in a Landraider up to the enemy lines and have them charge in separate directions (same for Very Large Targets such as full ork mobs and Hive Tyrant+3 guard.)

I have changed my army a little bit after hearing some of your responses. This is my new list: a land raider, one squad of six Khorne berserkers, another squad of six Khorne berserkers, Kharn, and a squad of six chosen. I play really small games, so I think this list will work pretty well.

I run two winged warptimin' princes, along with a greater daemon; 4 squads of 10 plague marines, combi flamer on the champ, flamer and melta in the squad, all in rhinos; sometimes vindicators, sometimes obliterators, often neither. Lesser daemons get a lot of use from me. Good at soaking power weapon heavy squads so my plague marines can rappid fire away, and good at providing cover saves for said plague marines, so they can commence with said favored activity.

Looking into making the princes nurgle marked and giving them rot, then putting two meltas in each plague marine squad. Normaly I don't like specialty squads, prefering to have everything be a threat to everything my opponent might have. Gonna try something new out though, broaden my horizons so to speak.

Somewhere in the unknown universe.

I like defilers with close combats weapon and heavy flamer.
Obliterators are good, but very..... overused.
Don't use Chaos dreadnaughts, they are way too expensive for what they are.
Raptors are good if you want fast striking CC support. You could also use Khorne Berserkers in a land raider for fast charging CC troops (with anti-tank firepower thrown in).
Chaos bikers with a biker lord is also a fast striking unit. (durable too, especially if they're Nurlge).
Demon Prince with wings, warptime, and Mark of Slaanesh is a target, but that keeps fire off your other troops.
