Been meaning to make a batch of jungle terrain for a while and finally got around to experimenting a bit this past weekend. I want it to have more of an "alien/other world" aesthetic to it as opposed to traditional looking jungle like you might see on earth, etc.

I found some cool plastic flowers that had tops that will make good "fungus ball plants" and the stem/armatures I used to make the larger "alien trees" seen here:


These are still very much WIP. Need to add more ground foliage onto the tree bases, and some moss and clinging vine to the trees themselves, but the basic structure is there.

The ground pieces (fungus balls and such) are not based yet, I just wanted to liven up the picture a bit and show what the overall goal will be as far as feel/aesthetic of this batch of terrain.

I like it! The height and more "bizarre" growth of these trees make them look very alien.

Do you know this really old WD-article about jungle terrain? It was in the English WD, when the catachans got their codex. They had really strange things inside it, for example a tree with small additional blue fir-trees ON it. They had a special rule about spraying fungi.

I´ve got the old Rogue Trader Rulebook from 1987; there´s a chapter about 15 or so plants as well. Do you need some information?

Catachan Brainleaf

A small tree that has a kind of animal-like inteligence. It can fire his sharp leafs at nearby persons. When hit by a leaf, there´s a similar effect to that of genestealers. The persons who have been hit become zombies of the brainleaf´s mind.

Creepers

Animal-like mind, too. They have long,sinuous limbs which react to approaching animals and mangle them.

Floaters

Floaters are plants filled with gas which are flying around in the air. They have long strings. If such a string hanging down the floater makes contact to sth., the floater will explode and scatter his seeds in the environment.

Gas Fungus

Fungi that spray around with toxic gas.

Rain Spores

A giant mushroom that lives in the ground when it´s dry. When there is a liquid hitting the ground, they grow uncontrolled in a frenzy and burst powerfull out of the ground.

Rubber Moss

A moss that travels through the galaxy by spacecraft, amongst cargo, on personal equipment, clothing etc. It´s BOUNCY and impossible to destroy.

Spiker

A plant ( 2 metres tall ) that fires poisonous spikes at nearby targets.

Spinethorn

A dry bush, black, without leaves. It´s like razor-wire.

Sponge Weed

A huge sponge-like plant. It is able to build a massive ball by moving ( it´s as big as a house or so )/ blocks line of sight

Tangle Fungus

A mass of entangling hyphae which make the ground very difficult terrain.

Thermotropic Vine

A vine searching for heat.

Venus Mantrap

Yeah I have only built three test models. As i sated this is a WIP project...

I really like it. This is brilliant. Keep at it!

So far, so quite good. That tall, skinny, flat-topped tree is really unique. I think it screams alien vegetation. I am really looking forward to seeing this vegetation en masse!

In all seriousness, try and keep the foliage to a minimum. Experience has informed me that it is extremely difficult to place models in crowded terrain. Unless that is what you WANT to do, in which case, have a blast! Like what's going on thus far though.

Here is another piece I finished up this afternoon:




It is based on one of the old Chimera wreck pieces from GW with some jungle plants added, etc.

Very, VERY nice. I think I might have to go and make a couple like that from the Forgeworld wreck models. I'd replace the foliage with lamps, etc. as I perfer Cities of Death.

I like the concept alot. This being said I do have a few criticisms, first off the way it looks currently reminds me alot of an aquarium the trees look like plastic and good terrain usually gives you the allusion that it is not fake but somehow a glimpse of an alternate world. I know this is a WIP so my criticisms may be fixed in coming updates.

I think the density of the terrain needs to be worked on a bit, and i know flora namely trees are kind of a pain to build into terrain without making them unusable.

I do like the chimera piece; adequate coverage but still space to place models.

If you painted the chimera then you are a decent painter and I would say put that to a bit more use, the other pieces need some TLC it wouldn't take much to make them stunning, i.e. slight contrast in depth like small differences in terrain height via dense flocking in certain areas that way it seems more like real ground than a flat piece of rock since it is supposed to be a jungle.

I do like the concept and if the chimera piece is any indication where you are taking this I look forward to your future updates.

My son thought we should give the terrain a test run so we played a small 1000pt. game with his new marines vs. my 'nids.

Looking at those tall plants , cant help feel it needs to have a few hovering zoanthropes on the picture.

Looks fine to me, WIP or not! I think you captured the alien look just fine. Amazing what terran plants can look like when they don't match the scale!

Oldest is nine and a voracious reader and smart as a whip. he has the basics of the game pretty much figured out. he got an AOBR box set a while back because he has been watching me and my clubmates play for a few years and wanted to have models of his own.

He has a sizable orky army( about 2000pts.) that he and I have been having a blast planning out and building for father-son time, but has just started thinking about fleshing his marines out...

The youngest is just a grot (just turned four) and mostly just watches, but he rolls the occasional die now and then and he can name just about every army on sight...

Those fake avocados are genius, am going to have to get some , what are the other small furry ball shaped plants

I'm in love with the small balls of fungus!

Loving it! Maybe some moss covered rock formations would help flesh it out. I think that it would be so much fun to play in this, as all that I get is cities of death.

I found those in the fake flowers section of Walmart though I can't rememebr the name of them. I popped them off the long plastic flower stems. They look suitably like an "alien spined fungus" to me.

Awesome scenery, I might make a jungle now. Seems fun and much easier than a city table.

We had discussed decorating it to resemble an actual Imperial bunker with motivational posters and Imperial signs on the walls, etc. but we haven't gone that far yet...
