So, recently, I've decided that if I am going to start MEQ, I might as well run Blood Angels.

Now, which codex should I use. The WD Codex or Codex: Ultramarines?

I use either interchangeably for my BA army, depending on what type of army I want to build, as the BA WD list lacks flexibility (and new toys), but is fine for making an assault company style marine list. The codex is better for anything else though.

The BA list may be somewhat limited in the choices you get (and slightly more expensive points wise) but you do get some great options with them.
I see no point in playing BA if your going to use the basic dex instead.

Assault troops: BA get to take them as a troop choice, giving you mobile scoring units that can be kitted out to take care of most things.

Baal pred: great anti-infantry vehicle, cheap on points and once again, exclusive to BA.

Death company: Amazing models and unit as a whole, either with or without jump packs they can cause plenty of damage due to having great rules (however, you will need to take a chappy to keep them in check)

Characters: Dante is a great model, in combat he is pretty fething good, and even at range he can tank hunt on his own due to his wep.
Mephiston is a combat monster, heavy on points, but well worth them in my opinion.
FNP mixed with his somewhat high stats means he will survive for a while, and cause alot of damage.

DC dread: Whats better than a dreadnought? a dread with even more CC attacks.
It may be somewhat unpredictable if not near a chappy, but give it the ven. and death company upgrade and you have a real monster that will do great things on the field

All in all the BA list offers some great builds which tend to focus on mobility, in which assault squads or rhino rush squads are key.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

If you really want to play Blood Angels then I am assuming you want to model and paint them as such plus you must like their background. They are fun to play. If you want to use the new Space Marine codex you could build a successor chapter such as the Lamenters. Since you have asked the question I can't help but feel you are leaning towards the Space Marine codex.

Why would you play the Lamenters? Everything in the universe just seems to go wrong for them. Granted, it'd be good if that parallels your dice rolling, but I wouldn't want to risk it.

On topic: run them both. Build a Blood Angels army in both codicies and see which one you like better.

WD Codex is more characterful for BA.

Otherwise play your red marines as SM, but say they're something else.

I prefer the BA codex for the mechanics and the fluff, it's a decent book in my not so humble opinion.

Tombworld El'Lahaun 2500pts
Hive Fleet Vestis 5000pts
Disciples of Caliban 2000pts
Crimson Fist 2000pts
World Eaters 1850pts
Angels Encarmine 1850pts
Iron Hospitalers 1850 pts (Black Templar Successor)
Sons of Medusa 1850pts
Tartarus IXth Renegade Legion 2500pts

BA army? Use thr BA codex. Any other thought is heretical.
Ultrasmurfs? That's EXTRA heretical.

the BA characters are all pretty amazing (except tycho who is horrible).. and so are the death company

However the army is very limited in what you can use.. Makes the army not as fun to play over and over again

The only problem I have right now is the points cost.

It's pretty rediculous, in the BA 'dex, but the core assault troops keep bringing me back.

Huh?

I think the BA points costs are in the right ballpark, more-or-less.

My only real beef with the Codex is not having Flamers, Plasma, & Meltas available to Assault Marine Troops.

Other than that, it's little things that would be "nice to have", such as all-LC or all-TH&SS VAS.

I'd take the older codex, not the newer one given as pdf version and printed in WD.
The older codex represents much more what Blood Angels are.
They can rage, which holds for all units, and infantry and Dreads have furious charge.

Except the older codex is no longer legal- tons of chaos players would take their old dex, too.

As suggested, build for both. That way you can play a little differently with the same forces.

I'd allow the older books in any game that I'm also allowed to use an older book.

Of course, I can be generous that way because Eldar Craftworlds spanks CSM 3.5.

The main problem with using old codices is that they don't always mesh with the new rules.

If you are a loser in general then the Lamenters is a great choice.
