Man, that title is boring, but everything else I thought of might have gotten me in trouble.
I opened this thread for two reasons: there aren't any heated 'new' Chaos codex threads to keep my interest up right now, but more importantly, I want to mesh my Goff horde with a Battlewagon spam (best of both worlds ((no Hana Montana))). I don't play my horde nearly as much as my CSM, so I have yet to really learn the do's and don'ts of Battlewagons. I don't want to spam all the same 'wagons. I'd like to get some shooty and some transports. Most importantly, I want to hear what you use and why it works for you.
Be forewarned: I'm a firm believer that the Deffrolla doesn't work on vehicles, but don't be afraid to mention it if that is how you play it.

I only run BWs as transports. They are just too good not to, especially when protected by a Kff. Honestly, you have better shooting platforms in the Ork dex than BWs anyway (looted wagons, Kans, Lootas), so I would focus solely on useing them as transports.
BTW, I do run Rollas on all my wagons, whether I am playing in a place that allows them to Ram or not. It allows me to get them where I want with tank shocks w/o worrying about losing them to a lucky DoG. I have met very few people that are willing to DoG, knowing that they will take 2d6 S10 hits just for trying Plus, it is fun to inflict the d6 hits just for tankshocking....then assaulting out of it to add insult to injury - it is a great tactic for taking objectives.

Deff Rollas are the best thing a vehicle could ever have. BWs have front AV14, so feel free to Tank Shock things for laughs. Nothing beats the thought of Marneus Calgar ingloriously squashed flat as a pancake under a Deff Rolla.
I've tried out gunwagons occasionally, and they aren't bad. Give them a Killkannon and four big shootas, and you've got quite a bit of anti-infantry firepower. They could also be used as bunkers for shoota boyz or Lootas if you remove the Killkannon.
|
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I'll pull together a list and see what I'll actually be needing. That should help you guide me. Keep up the good suggestions though.

If you limit yourself to only have 12 lootas, you could still have the killkannon while using the Battewagon as a bunker for your lootas. I would prefer to keep the killkannon off and fill it with boys or meganobz. Oh, and yeah, put deff rolla's on all of em even if they dont work with rams.

Best to use every transport space. 20 boyz, 10 meganobs, 2 squads of nobs, 2 squads of lootas, etc. If you're running nobs or lootas, consider running 12 lootas or nobs + megaboss + killkannon. Remember that you can both shoot and assault out of it, so 20 shoota boyz are no slouch, with a grand total of:
34 S4 Shoota shots
67 S4 Attacks in CC
6 S5 Big Shoota Attacks
4 S9 PK attacks in CC
If you can get them into 6" range.
Tell me what that wouldn't kill.

Maybe 10 Wraithguard with Fortune?
Anyway, I finally got time and made a list:
Big Mek, KFF, Boss Pole, Powerklaw 115
5 Meganobz, 2 Skorchas, 210
19 Shoota Boyz, 114
30 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, BP, 225
30 Slugga Boyz, Nob, PK, BP, 225
20 Sluggas, Nob, PK, BP, 165
Battlewagon, Killkannon, Rolla, 'Ard Case, 185 (Nobz)
Battlewagon, 4 Big Shootas, Lobba, Red Paint, 130 (Shootas with Mek)
Battlewagon, 2 Rokkit Launchers, Kannon, Grabbin' Klaw, Red Paint, 130 (Sluggas)
1499
So the idea is that the Mek's 'wagon drives at the center of this mass, allowing his shield to cover everyone. Once he gets to a good spot right in front of the enemy's lines, they start blasting. The Grabbin' 'wagon is a tank chaser. It'll try to lock the enemy into place and blow them to pieces. The boyz inside will get free hits with the Klaw too, so that is a bonus. The Kill'wagon delivers the Meganobz and then opens up with it's big gun. The rest of the boyz do what they do.

This shouldn't be threadromancy, since I started the thread. I didn't want to open another one, but I was thinking about looking a Punisher and using the gun for 4 Big Shootas and a Lobba. We all know the Punisher is a bad IG tank, but would it work for da boyz?

Most people really hate the Lobba, but I donno YMMV. 4x big shootas is pretty good I'd say.

I've had mediocre to poor results when using BWs as a gunwagon. Mine are built to deliver Orks into close range. Some things I will typically do with a BW:
-always a Reinforced Ram or Deff Rolla. You absolutely need the reroll for difficult terrain.
-get a couple of Big Shootas to ensure a WPN DSTRY result won't immobilize the BW
-KFF is very useful
Units I like inside my BWs
-Burna Boyz
-Nobz
-Ard Boyz
-Ghazghkull
-Big Mek w/ KFF
It's not really game breaking but definitely keeps my opponents on their toes. Ghaz is a unit that can be very good for opening key Land Raiders. Once he destroys it and gets assaulted by whatever uber unit is inside, call the Waagh. Now, he has a chance to weather the storm and then you can now counter assault the uber unit with other things still in the BWs.

Remember, you can't put two squads into a transport so 2xNobz or 2xLootas in a battlewagon is not possible.

BW's are best for transports, as has been said earlier. However I disagree with the 'always take deffrollas' option. d6 str 10 hits sound fun, but you can't use them on vehicles all the time, and even then they unit you shock still gets his armor save as far as I can tell. 20 pts I think can be more effective elsewhere.
I usually have BWs with a big shoota to absorb a weapon destroyed result, throw extra armor on it to make sure it stays moving, and I personally like the boarding planks. It removes the fear of getting shot up by whatever was in the enemy transport next turn after you've popped ride.
I've used BWs as a firing platform for lootas and that does seem to work well. If you only leave one back for the lootas it kind of makes them a prime target as after turn 1 they'll be without FKK cover, making it a prime target for outflanking walkers or deepstriking dreadnoughts.
Lately I'm really loving burnas in a BW. I usually have at least 10 with a KFF Mek with PK. Drive it 6" next to an unsuspecting squad of tac marines, and then drop 50 str 4 hits on them from the protection of your transport. you can also forego firing and come at some termies with 30 str 4 power weapon attacks. Just make sure they're getting the charge and are not left open to fire. Even with the fancy weapon they're still just boyz.

Really it's only 15 points that COULD be used else where. The Ram is needed for diff. terrain rerolls. I've never failed a reroll with deffrollas. So if you think of it as 15 points and you roll on average 3.5 hits x 5/6 wounds you'll just about make your points back killing 1 marine. If they DoG then that's another 3.5 hits on average and probably somefink dead.
Where I play it's always been allowed to attack other vehicles, although I've been reading more people putting grabbin klaws on them. On a 4+ that LR, greatest threat ever just like Rory said, is now hit by Nobz or Warboss automatically.
But to address the OT.
I run 3 HS KillKannon/Kannon shoulder-to-shoulder with with BigMek with KFF and 10 Burna's and an extra mek with Bigshoota in the middle one with a troop of 11 boyz plus PK Bosspole Nob each in the other 2. They move 7" a turn up the middle shielding trukk boyz whilst my 11 bikerboyz with PK bosspole BikerNob and BikerBoss attack/annoy other targets from the sides.
Also in 2500+ point games I run 10 nobz in a BW with 2 BS

Good tips in this thread. My 2 cents--they are assault vehicles so get them close to the enemy fast. BWs have great front armor but with the open-top and other armor profiles they just aren't that survivable. Having said that, get a boarding plank so you can stay in the vehicle if it is more prudent. I've have good success with a PK-armed Warboss using the boarding plank to hit vehicles. BWs work great with trukks too. For a 1750 point list now I'm toying with a 4 BW list or 3 BW and possibly 2 trukks. Finally, I'd say that the models themselves are great.

Olympia has some great points. With a big mek field, the front armour is really reliable, but once someone outflanks you, the wagons can go down pretty easy.
