I went to the first tournament of the Atlanta circuit today. I took my brand new Terminator heavy Renegade Space Marines (Masters of Tomorrow). Anyone who saw my army at the Big Waaagh, these are the yellow/green divided Terminators.

My list was as follows:

Abaddon
Typhus
5 Berserkers w/Rhino
5 Berserkers w/Rhino
10 Chaos Terminators w/Icon of Tzeentch, 2 combi meltas, 2 combi flamers, 2 reaper autocannons, 2 chainfists
10 Chaos Terminators w/Icon of Nurgle, 2 combi meltas, 2 combi flamers, 2 reaper autocannons, 2 chainfists
5 Chaos Terminators w/Icon of Slaanesh, 2 pairs of lightning claws, 2 combi meltas

The venue:

We were at the Gaming Pit. The GP is about as stripped down and bare bones of a store as you can get, and its also my home club. It was the same terrain and tables we play on every weekend. We had 17 people at the tournament, so we were using 9 of the tables. Nice to get a game you don't have to travel to.

The field:

Armies I saw:

2 Eldar (both walking)
1 Orks (green tide w 9 kans, 2 loota units)
3 Daemons (2 mixed, mostly khornate, 1 nurgly)
3 Space Marine armies (Mech Vulkan ultramarines, Mech gunline Iron Hands, Purple generic marines)
2 Nids (nidzilla, swarm nids)
1 Blood Angels (dante/Corbulo mixed rhino/assault packs)
1 Daemon hunters (Grey Knights)
2 Guard (Entirely Mech, 90% mech w/PBS, mystics)
2 CSM (My list, Mech single lash list)

Ringer army was Player A's Tzeentch Daemons.

Most of these were quite competative builds and players. ATL has a fierce scene, and we came out in a fair degree of force for this tourney.

Game #1:

Primary (15 points for winner, 7 points for tie, 0 for loser), Seize Ground, auto 5 objectives
Secondary (10 points for winner, 5 points for tie, 0 for loser), Win by VP's, must be > 100 or counts as tie
Tertiary (5 points for winner, 2 for tie, 0 for loser), Kill enemy General, general is highest point HQ

Enemy list:

Epidemius
Herald of Nurgle, Breathe of Chaos
GUO, cloud of flies
14 Plaguebearers
14 Plaguebearers
7 Plaguebearers
7 Plaguebearers
7 Nurglings
7 Nurglings
Daemon Prince, MoN, Flight, Iron Hide, Cloud of Flies, Breathe of Chaos
Daemon Prince, MoN, Flight, Iron Hide, Cloud of Flies, Breathe of Chaos
Soul Grinder w/Phlegm upgrade

I won the roll to place the first objective, I put it near a board edge, he put one in the middle, i put one east of the first one, he put one in the NW corner, I put one west of the first one.

He won the roll off, made me pick sides and go first. I was happy to do so, and selected the side I'd placed the objectives on. I deployed a rhino with berserers 12" up, on my objective.

So I'm on the S side. There are 3 objectives 13" up the board, 12" spaced laterally, one in the center and one in the NW corner. See it? Ok.

Top 1:

Terminators march on en-masse, Second rhino drives up to join first. Running places my guys in a cloud up about 12".

Bottom 1:

He selects Epidemius + a 14 man squad, Herald + a 14 man squad, 2 princes, soul grinder. He rolls a 1. So he Deep strikes with the wrong half.

He puts the GUO NW of me, about 18", puts a 7 man squad on his NW objective, and the other 7 man squad N of the center objective. He drops the nurglings south of the NW squad (they scattered over there), and the other nurglings east of the center.

So there's 7 PBs + Nurglings NE of me, 7 PBs + Nurglings in the far NW corner, GUO a little ways NW

Top 2:

I move the Rhinos out further on the flanks, Terminators march up and fire on GUO, ultimately deal just one wound. Abaddon and Typhon are Front and Center with the Tzeentchers and Nurglers respectively.

Bottom 2:

He rolls for reserves, Epidemius and the Herald and their 14 man retinues. He dumps them both in the midfield, with Epi North of the 7 man squad and the Herald east of it. He moves both Nurgling units closer, on the east side they are actually getting into range, about 7 inches out.

So, I'm facing a sea of Nurglings to the north, but out of assault range, a GUO to the NW, with a wound on it, and Nurglings threatening a charge on the east.

Top 3:

I take the Berserkers out of the Rhinos. I agonize over it, but I need the rhinos for contesting, and the Berserkers for holding, so they gotta split up. I take Typhon and join him to the Slaaneshinators, who move up on the Nurglings, as do the eastern Berserkers. Both Nurglinators and Tzeentchinators fire on GUO, doing 3 wounds this round, so he's just got one left. Rhinos drives towards his objective, the eastern one tank shocking through his PB's.

Slaaneshinators, Typhon and the Berserkers assault the Nurglings, take them out without any wounds and massacre back. The count goes up to one because Typhon killed a base.

Bottom 3:

The Demon Princes and Soul Grinders come in off the Eastern Icon, ending up right in my face. It's on now. The grinders uses its Phlegm on the Berserkers, killing 1 and one more dies to an errant breath from a Prince. I don't lose a single Terminator to the Breaths through, thanks to a combination of him rolling low to wound, Typhon taking the first hit, and rolling Tzeentchinator invuls.

Epi's unit assaults my Rhino, shakes it.

Top 4:

Rhinos continue towards objectives. His GUo has been heading back towards his NW one, going to have to deal with that somehow. Typhon, Tzeentchinators and Nurglinators shoot down one DP and don't do anything to the other. Slaaneshinators charge through cover at unwounded DP, lose one terminator and do one wound.

Bottom 4:

His Herald unit moves up behind the Prince and tries to charge the Tzeentchinators, but fails his move. His Soul Grinder destroys my eastern Rhino with a phlegm shot. His NW nurglings get close to their dismounted Berserker targets.

In combat neither terminators nor DP does any wounds.

Top 5:

Tzeentchinators, Typhon and Abaddon run over the Heralds squad, after some shooting. Bersekers spread out to be near 2 of my objectives. Nurglinators charge Nurglings, do a bunch of wounds but don't win. I lose 2 Slaaneshinators, but don't break. I tank shock onto his NW objective.

Bottom 5:

He finishes off the Slaaneshinators, massacres north. Epi runs for my SE objective with his unit, but doesn't reach it. GUO attacks Herald, rhino, but doesn't do anything. Nurglinators kill off nurglings, massacre NE

Top 6:

Rhino moves around a bit on his objective. Abaddon splits off from the squad and kills the Demon Prince, Typhon + his Tzeentchinators kill Epedemius and his squad. Nurglingators charge into his 7 man plaguebearers squad and wipe them out.

Bottom 6:

He kills the rhino on his objective.

So I pull a win on primary (2 objectives to one), secondary (ahead on VP's), but that dang GUO is still alive, and he, and not Epi, is general, so its a draw on tertiary.

Very good game for me. My army is excellent in assault matchups, particularly vs. Epi who couldn't get the count going. Him getting the wrong half really gave me the upper hand. This is my hardest mission, so getting it out of the way is very important for me.

I was in a decent position going into 2, but the guy who was tied with me had IG with PBS. Ruh roh! Hope I play up or down...

Game #2:

Mission:

Primary: Capture and Control, but objectives in center of adjacent quadrants instead of deployment quadrants
Secondary: Have greatest # of VP's in center of table.
Tertiary: Kill more non-scoring units

IG (doh!)

Melta command w/Astropath, Chimera
Primaris Psyker
Marbo
Inquisitor w/2 Mystics
8 man PBS w/Chimera
Melta vets in chimera
Melta vets in chimera
Flamer vets in flame chimera
Melta vets in Vendetta
Melta vets in Valkrye
Demolisher w/lascannon, HB sponsons
RBT w/lascannon, HB sponsons
Infantry platoon w/2 troop units, each have lascannon

He takes NW quadrant, deploys first. Basically the typical IG parking lot.

I deploy Nurglinators NE and Tzeentchinators slightly W. Both are pretty far E for SE quadrant deployment. I want to keep em far from that accursed PBS, which is on W side. I put Slaaneshinators in reserve to give him something to think about. One Rhino w/berserkers in reserve, other is on NE corner of SE quadrant. Abaddon and Typhus form a unit of 2 and get as close to the center as possible.

He scouts his Vendetta + Valkrye over to 12" away from Abaddon/Typhus:

Top 1:

He moves up his Vendetta + Valk and out come the melta guys, they surround Abaddon/Typhus. He asks me what I was thinking, leaving them out like that. His whole army shoots at them.

Every time he fires lascannons/other s8 weapons they are mixed with lasguns/heavy bolters/whatever. I put instant death weapons on Abaddon, and others on Typhus, so I get FNP vs. the little stuff, and 4+ invul vs. the big. I take 1 wound on each at the end of it all.

Bottom 1:

Abaddon and Typhus multi-charge on of the vet units + their vendetta, shaking it and destroying a weapon. The Tzeentchinators come west and north, firing into the Valk and shakes it and destroys the multi-laser. The Nurglinators fire into the vets and break them. The NE rhino heads towards the NE objective.

Top 2:

He shoots everything again on Abaddon and Typhon, this time killing Abaddon. He switches to the Tzeentchinators with some guys, killing 2 and not getting the PBS threshhold. He sends a melta chimera across the north board edge to get the Ne objective from the zerks.

Bottom 2:

Typhon moves closer, and in come the Slaaenshinators off his Icon. The Mystic warns the Demolisher, but its shots do nothing. The Tzeentchinators move closer, and run closer still, as do the Nurglinators. Actually the Tzeentchinators charged and killed the broken melta guys, then massacred closer.

Top 3:

First rank fire, second rank fire on the titanic unit (he has a 25 man combined infantry unit), kills 3 Tzeentchinators. His main shooting kills Typhus, and 2 Slaaneshinators. He gets out of his chimera (it got shaken, think by Nurglinator fire) and shoots the Berserkers out of their rhino in the NE. He weaken resolves on the Tzeentchinators and they break.

Bottom 3:

Berserkers drive on in the SW, smoke. Slaaneshinators move east, surrounding flame chimera (which had flamed them last round), running Tzeentchinators blow up the chimera, which also had the primary psyker in it. Primaris + goons are killed by the Slaaneshinators. Nurglinators charge the 25 man unit, moving so as to only get 2 in. Combat is a draw, and Nurglinators pile in. Berserkers charge and kill both the NE melta vets and their chimera.

Top 4:

He shoots down fleeing Tzeentchinators, killing them all, and gets Slaaneshinators down to 1 man, who is weaken resolved and sent fleeing. Nurglinators win combat, pile west.

Bottom 4:
SW rhino gets on objective. NE Berserkers get on objective. Nurglinators get in cover and blow away command co. chimera, charge and kill guys inside.

Top 5: Flyers make last ditch effort to contest objectives. Shooting damages Nurglinators to 5, but PBS unit fails psyker test. Marbo shots up and fails to kill any NW berserkers. Kills SW rhino with shooting.

Bottom 5: Nurglinators blow away valk, sit in center. Berserkers kill Marbo. Game ends. SW Berserkers kill inquisitor squad.

I got primary (had NE objective)
I got secondary (Nurglinators only unit near center)
I got tertiary (killed 4 chimeras, Inquisitor squad, command squad, primaris psyker, vendetta to his 2 terminator units, 2 rhinos Abaddon and Typhus)

A very difficult game with a particularly bad matchup for me. Not my best objective, but not my worst either. Very good to pull a 30 out of it. I'm on table one going into the last round.

Game #3:

Primary: Kill Points
Secondary: Have more scoring units in the enemy's deployment zone than they do in yours
Tertiary: Kill their most expensive unit while keeping yours alive.

Enemy list: Orks

Warboss on bike, boss pole, attack squig, PK, cybork body
Big Mek, bosspole, KFF
3 kans
3 kans
3 kans
15 Lootas
14 lootas
25 Boys w/PK/bosspole nob
25 Boys w/PK/bosspole nob
25 Boys w/PK/bosspole nob
25 Boys w/PK/bosspole nob

He gets first and sets up with his guys spread out along the N line, 3 Kan units concentrated in the center.

I put my terminators across from him, leave the Zerkers in reserve. Typhon in Nurglinator squad, Abaddon in Tzeentchinator squad.

Top 1:

He moves south, lootas kill a Nurglinator, put a wound on Typhon

Bottom 1:

I shoot autocannons at center lootas, killing 4.

Top 2:

He moves south, but hesitates around 18", kill can fire and loota fire kill another Nurglinator and a Tzeentchinator (he's got grotzookas and they are scattering everywhere)

Bottom 2:

I continue to concentrate fire on the Lootas, I kill another 3 and the center group runs off the board.

Top 3:

He doesn't really move south, just pounds me with grotzookas. He kills another 3 Nurglinators.

Bottom 3:

Still no Zerkers! I shoot some Kans that are out of range of the KFF, shake them.

Top 4:

He still hesitates, though he's coming a little more south now. He shoots the Nurglinators and gets a 6th, and another wound on Typhon.

Bottom 4:

I switch my fire to the NE lootas, killing 2. I finally get my Zerkers on, they come on in the SW corner and race N, smoking.

Top 5:

He moves south diffidently, plainly leery of a charge from Abaddon and Co. More shooting kills a 7th, 8th, 9th, Nurglinator. The last one passes its leadership.

Bottom 5: I shoot down 4 more lootas and the NW squad, they hold. Rhinos move further up the board (24" along west side now).

Top 6: He races flanker squads for my board edge, E squad makes it with a run, W squad doesn't. He puts 9 wounds on the Nurglinator but he makes each and every 2+. Champ.

Bottom 6: I shoot down 3 more lootas, they break and run off the board. Berserkers drive 12", hop out, run into his deployment zone.

Game ends:

I get primary (2 KP for lootas to 0)
I get secondary (2 Berserkers in his DZ to one Boy unit in mine)
I get tertiary (killed his big loota squad, last Nurglinator was still alive).

With that, I've got a combined 87 Battle Points, and I have good soft scores (these guys are painted great!), so I win overall!

Go me!

Prize support for first was 125 dollars of GW models, which I thought was awesome.

Best general went to a Daemon player ,he also tied for best sportsmen with another daemon player ( who I got in the first round). Best Painted went to Player D's Eldar for the 50th time.

Orky sharpshooter went to a player who had 5 Vanguard armed with plasma pistols move up and fire on a pair of troops holding a vital objective...and manage to kill 2... Vanguard.

Tau Martial artists went to a player who had 5 thunderhammer stormshield terminators charge 3 Killa Kans, and failed all 5 invul saves before they got to swing. OUCH!

The tournament was a great time. We had a lot of guys out and we're all looking forward to the next event in the circuit. You get points equal to the # of people you placed ahead of, so I'm only one point ahead of the second place player, anything could happen.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Sounds like the IG player let the cat out of the bag.

I'm not a big fan of Chaos terminators as they are not fearless, you lose the icon and you lose the benefit of the Mark plus they cannot cult weapons like sonic blasters. They are a shadow of what they were.

Truthfully I am shocked your list did so well. It's very soft on the long range anti-tank. Very nice job though!!

Awesome work 4KE, way to put terminator to face I've only recently returned to thinking about mass terminator possibilities, but when C:CSM was re-released I remember being pretty impressed with the possibilities. Note you've taken the survival-oriented marks, and that's probably for the better - my favorite was always 10 khorninators w/ 2 reapers, 4 chainfists for a drunk amount of combat power, even on the receiving end. But then without lash I think the red terminators are probably the hardest to get to work ...

Also, what's the thinking on the baby zerker troops? Cheap-ish fearless scorers ready for opportunistic assaults, should they arise?

And finally, excellent work tag-teaming Abby & Master T against the guard dude. I tittered when I realized what your plan was, and could only applaud when it worked

Nice report as usual Walt. The only correction I have to make, is that there were 19 people in the tournament, not 17.

It was a good event, congrats on the win.

Nice reports, and well played. I play against an army list that vaguely resembles this, and it never seems like alot on paper, but can really deliver in game. Congrats on the win.

Problem with terminators are they're a serious gamble. I lost 4 when a mob of slugga boyz shot me with pistols and did 5 wounds. Then again, I had a unit of obliterators [same saves] survive three tactical squads, all rapid firing, and their rhinos, and a dreadnought without taking a single wound. It can happen, but if you roll badly you lose SO much SO fast.

@Zid: Yeah, it's an odd list. I enjoy playing it alot. It's got a very unique matchup matrix.

@Afrikan: I don't know about what they were, didn't really play much before this Chaos Codex, and never vs. Chaos Terminators. I like how they are now though. Gotta admit, Fearless would be nice, but then they'd probably be much more expensive.

@DarkHound: Alot of my success came down to matchup. I got Nurgle Daemons on the hardest mission for me, and they are a sublist that has an enormous problem with this army. My best mission, KP, put me up against a foe without the ability to kill Terminators hiding behind their IC's at range. I couldn't have beaten the Orks in any kind of objective mission.

@Ezekk: While I lack long range heavy AT I can do a pretty good job at reaching out and touching rhinos with the autocannons. My general way to handle Russes/Hammerheads/other heavy tanks that hang back is to disregard them and kill their objective taking troops while they pick away at the Terminators.

@Savage: Thanks! I decided not to go with the Khornate face kickers on the basis that I was bringing Abaddon and Typhus, who both multiply the squad's ability to fight beyond reason. What I need from my Terminators, primarily, is the ability to survive enemy fire. The Slaaneshinators are there to fight with furious charge marines (Blood Angel vets near Dante/Corbulo or Berserkers).

The Berserkers are CSM in the final version of the list, but they weren't painted in time for this Tourney, so I had to use a friend's Berserker. They are just objective takers, hide in rhinos and in reserve if necessary.

The Tag Team was the only way I could think of to keep my Terminators from being Weaken Resolved before they got anywhere near useful range. The key to that game was penning him back in his own zone, so I had to be advancing, but I lacked the firepower to really do so. They stole 2 shooting phases, which game me the crucial 18" I needed to make my push.

@Clay: Thanks man. What were the last 2 playing? I thought I'd gotten everyone. Probably Space Marines, right? Are the official results posted anywhere?

@Iboshi2: I get a lot of mileage out of people not quite knowing what to do, so they just shoot at me ad infinitum. Perks of playing a nonstandard list.

@Spellbound: To an extent, it's a dice game. You are always gambling. I know what you mean though, I guess I'm just comfortable with this level of risk/reward.

@Player A: Oh, yeah, you did play Necrons, I'd forgotten.

@Badger: Yeah, good point. I don't know if I'm remembering wrong, or if he had the rule wrong. I actually figured that out this morning, when I tried to get a combined squad + command squad for FNP on everybody, combined with Yarrick nearby and a standard they'd be the tarpit of doom. Guess they saw that one coming.

@Cajunman: Definitely going to the next one. I'm not sure I can get to the Nov one, but I think the next one is Oct 18thish, and I"m down for any weekend in October. Not sure what list I should bring though...

@Badger: I've got a lot of lists...I think a few more of em have batreps on this site too...

Some of the others I've used:
9 Tomb Spyders + 30 scarabs + C'tan + necrons
One rhino full of each cult, one rhino full of possessed, 3 Oblits, Lash Prince
150 Kroot, Devilfish of fire warriors, 9 Broadsides, Crisis Suit Commander
100 Space Marines w/1 HQ, organized as per battle company (6 tac squads, 2 assault squads, 2 dev squads)

Recently I've completed a Horde IG army. I noticed that everybody who does IG is doing the Mech approach, so I thought I'd try an army that showcased the wave of boots and lasguns style. Unfortunately, I have a visceral reaction to playing IG, just can't do it. So I made it out of the War of the Ring Mordor models. Idea is that Sauron won the War of the Ring, and is now Governor of Middle Earth, and this is his PDF.

It isn't quite done, but this is how I'm going to field it on Wednesday/Thursday.

Sauron (Yarrick)
Gothmog + retinue (Straken w/command squad + company standard)
4 Nazgul (4 Priests + Eviscerators)
4 units of Morannon Orcs (4 units of Penal Legion)
2 units + command squad of Mordor orcs (2 units + command squad of Infantry)
1 unit of Goblins (1 unit of Conscripts)
1 unit of Uruk Hai lead by Shagrat (1 unit of Veterans w/3 sniper rifles led by Harker)
5 Trolls (5 Ogryn)
1 Gollum (1 Marbo)
1 Dragon of Ancient Times (1 Banewolf w/dozer blade, smoke launchers, searchlights)
1 Witch King on Fell Beast with Valkrye base (1 Valkrye w/heavy bolter sponsons)
10 Warg Riders (10 Rough Riders)
1 Bolt Thrower (1 Hydra)

Should be pretty cool.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Whenever I see a list like yours I know that as long as it is not a kill points mission all I have to do is kill 10 Khorne Berzerkers.

If the IG player just went after your troops and ignored the terminators, you would have been in a world of hurt.

On the other hand I like this list a lot better than what people call termicide. There is a lot of tactical dreadnaught armor in that army of yours and I think even the smurfs' 1st company would be jealous. You outsmarted the IG player so my helmet is off to you. This game needs people like you that bring new ideas to the game, it's refreshing to say the least. I think you played the list very well. While we sometimes want to deny it the game can come down to dumb luck at times and the PSB chumped it out. It's nice when Lady Luck smiles upon because she can be one cold hearted b*tch at times.

Ya I am thinking by that time I'll either have my Emperors children or my nid army to play we shall see. Here at gigabites we got a touney coming up Oct 3rd so I got a chance to get ready.

@Blackmoor: I guess. I killed all of his troops, so it would have been a draw?

@Afrikan Blonde: Thanks!

@Cajunman550: Rock on. I was sad to see only one Gigabytes player (Iron Hands, think he actually did real well) at the Pit.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).
