2'x2'wide

I fancied making the internals of a Mega Gargant. Multi tiered, killing the Krew as you go.
Other than that, I think a decent Hive style board. Lots of walkways, different levels, perhaps ways of blocking off some paths (demolish walkways etc).
The second is very doable!

I think it should only be two Rhinos wide though. Not sure if that more or less than a Baneblade.

i dont think you can do better than a well designed and made cityfight board. it really captures the feel of the 40K universe, and if you can ever find (or make) one as good as this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWG9MFQ6Tcs then very little can better it!

There was a picture of a board that GW made like that a long ass time ago. It was actually really cool. I guess they made different objectives to play on it like blow the bridge and whatnot. A unit had to demo charge the bridges before the other army could get there. Or you could even blow the bridge up WHILE the enemy was on it. Seemed pretty damn cool.
Call me crazy, but Im an Ork player, so Id like to make a super awesome Orkoid battlefield. Make it look like there are scrap heaps everywhere, and a few multi leveled would be just awesome to play on.

The Chicago Battle Bunker has a really great table which is all a giant Ork scrapyard. There are a couple of close-up shots of it in the Oct 8 entry on the following blog, but they don't really give you a sense of the whole table:

I wonder if any of our Chicagoan Dakkites might have some bigger shots?

My FLGS had a multi-tier crystal cavern about 4 feet tall, with walkways all through it and tunnels.
It looked awesome, but was a pain to measure ranges and move through. Enjoyed every game I played on it (all Battletech).

I have always wanted to make a half and half table, where one table is an open battlefield, and the other is an interior of a bunker, large enough for a motor pool. And the board can be combined to make one large board.
That would be fun.
Also a coastal fishing village would be interesting.

I was thinking like a supply depot/outpost that had the open battle field, maybe a forest on one side, and the outer wall and door. And the bunker have a large area, be able to pit 6 or so rhinos, and a few entry points and office type rooms on a hallway that are all connected but big enough for at least 3 25mm bases to stand side by side.
And when its all put together have at least 3 areas for entry to the bunker so its not all focused on one door. Could see squads falling back into the bunker as they get overwhelmed from the attacking force, making a last stand in the command room.
Did a campaign that used some random resin corridors that someone had found. We first had to assault the outer defenses, and we had a separate table set up with a bunch of hallways and stuff. Made for some very interesting games.

I think for 40K, a Tau city post bombardment where some of the buildings are still standing, but there is enough rubble and cover scattered around to make it interesting. Of course you'll need corpses for full effect, maybe a tape of babies crying playing backwards too.
For WFB, I think a Dark Elf themed Fortress seige would be a lot of fun and open a lot of modelling possibilites.

I could forsee the inside of a space ship manufacturing bay being awesome (although you'd only be able to represent a small fraction of the entire factory.
Rig up some air-powered lifts, vats of goo, catwalks, heavy machinery. Could have a partially built ship for giggles if you want. Would look great with LEDs and whatnot all over.

I would like a "Bridge too Far" game board. Two large city areas with a large river right down the middle. One huge bridge in the middle say large enough to have two lanes of (baneblade sized) traffic, to fight over. There may be a few smaller bridges, but they would be infantry or single file smaller vehicles only, say Rhinos and Russes.
The other game I've long imagined is "Thunderhawk Down". A large desert city much like a cross between Mogadishu (obviously what it's based on) and Mektown in Gorkamorka. A crashed Thunderhawk in the middle with a character and equipment that needs recovery, several convoys of Rhinos drive in full of Marines, and the city is chock full of feral orks on the rooftops and in the streets.

Some great ideas for multi-level boards. I think that these are attractive because they let you play BIGGER BATTLES in a smaller space. The carpark idea is a good one. The MegaGargant idea is also awesome.
I think that they could be a little tough to execute, though. With the simple case of one game board suspended above another, moving models on the lower board could be a pain because you have to reach under the upper board. And also it would be harder to see what's happening on the lower board. I'd have to see an example with my own eyes to decide if this were really possible - though it is a great idea and it seems as if there might be a way.
I guess you could have a sort of a bridge in the middle of a gaming board - make it wide enough (but not too wide) and you could add nicely to your gaming space. Like a 1 foot by 8 foot bridge in the center of a 4x8 table, maybe, could work well - maybe!
Linked tables are maybe the best idea - whether they are physically linked (like with a bridge) or conceptually linked (with a teleporter). Heck, using this method, you could have tables in different rooms with different players playing on them!
5 minute idea for multilevel board which includes a bridge in the middle:

I don't know what the best board would be, but what I want to see more of is non-Imperial boards. Apart from, maybe, Orks, all other types of board seem to be both very rare and very sparse of scenery.
This afternoon I have routed out the hardpan and PVA-sanded out my desert board, for which I am bulding a group of Eldar bastions.
I also have craters that need painting, I'll be adding palm trees and I'll make some non-Bastion Eldar scenery too.
