Hey Dakka. I was hoping we could have a discussion about the Land Speeder Tempest. I'm probably going to get one from Forgeworld. I'm looking for thoughts/opinions and advice from anyone with experience using one.

They are much better with AV11 up front, donkey cannon and TL ML. I wish we could run squadrons. They are just that good.

I'm glad that IA:A2 finally makes them fliers like they keep being mentioned as in the fluff, but weren't in the rules.

I like them when they are used as hvy support, but I haven't used them as my gaming group does not use Forge World heavily.
Otherwise, I don't have space in my list for them.
I do rather use Typhoons though.
Their missile launchers are better and the range keeps them out of trouble.
The Tempest is cool anti-'harder' infantry than the Typhoons, which means it'll be needing the AV11.
I think it's nifty, but the 'in codex' options are pretty good already, IMO.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

There is an oddity with playing this game. A 90 point model staying 36" away will attract less fire than 30 point model 12" away -- even if the Typhoon is the bigger threat.

@labmouse42:
The Tyhpoon should be at 48" to maximize the range.
In which the tempest is beat with the Tyhoon having an additional shot.
The maximum damage range of the Typhoon is 36" yes, while the Tempest is 24".
So their maximium damage range scales with the armor they have I guess.
As for the oddity: it's just target priority (not the old rule, but what is a threat at that moment).
If we are talking about LRs...that Multi-melta within 12" is a higher threat than the Typhoons... That's at least one situation where it's not an oddity.
It's not that the closer thing is more threatening... most weapons' operational ranges are shorter (small arms + 12" range = more damage to be done. When your weapons are in range to kill something, you'd rather take care of the closer thing, then worry about using resources at downing the Typoons....which is the beauty of target saturation.
It's only when someone brings the longer ranged small arms or crazy fast stuff with small arms that makes the board smaller and makes the longer range meh on the Typhoon...which leads to the beauty of reserves

I mentioned 36" just in case you also wanted to fire the heavy bolter. As they are a fast vehicle, you could move 6" and fire both. There are times when you will want to do that, like shooting at infantry or AV10. If you are not using the HB, then the 48" range is ideal.
In addition to the reasons you mentioned, the reason people fire on the closer targets is also a psychological one. When playing chess, its easy to forget the bishop in the corner, much like it is easy to forget the typhoon shooing through a ruins window.

I don't quite have that problem... I generally stand on my opponent's side... .
Yes they can engage at closer ranges to full effect, but what I was getting at was that the safest distances is max distance away... but in the end it doesn't matter as the enemy will most likely approach you and the board is only so big.
