Hey guys, my name is Liam and im turning 14 this year. I live in Australia and i'd like to start to get into Warhammer 40k. I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on some starting armies, where i could find rules and just general knowledge about the game. I'm not a total noob though, i have played the RTS version of 40k and i seemed to enjoy it. That basically gave me an idea on some of the armies. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to Dakka! What information do you want to know? There is quite a bit of information to throw out, however basic. Any armies you are specifically interested in?

How is it they live in such harmony - the billions of stars - when most men can barely go a minute without declaring war in their minds about someone they know.

welcome to dakka dakka and the hobby
it depends on if you want to paint a tonne of minitures, or a speciallised hard hitting army.
the imperial guard have the most tanks you can get but there infantry is weak (im a guard player). so yeah
um space marines are played by most new players becuae they are strong and all round good. tyranids are a horde army with millions of troops being able to be used, same with orks. nercons are just boring and a pain in the but (from a guard's view) sorry any necron players. elder are a fast moving specalised army. tau are a long ranged army with lots of strong weapons
with few good close combantants

so maybe try chaos space marines if ur mate is playing SM.
but i just have to say play GUARD!!!!!!!!!!

IG are probably the most expensive, but fit in what you want. Just go slowy and you won't notce because they're fairly cheap, it's just that you will probably end up getting a bit more. Cheapest two are Space Marines and Orks. I don't see why you can't play Space Marines if you want and your friend is, just paint them a different colour. BAM! crisis averted.

I also agree, the Executioner version of the Leman Russ is awesome at killing marines. I've seen one take out 18 in one turn, they didn't even have a chance at saving against it.
