One thing that struck me at the St Valentines Massacre tournament is how the IG is now really two different armies, the old meat shield and tank WWI/WWII army and a new BS4, airborne assault army.
So would it make sense to split the IG into Codex IG and Codex Storm Troopers? Put all the high tech late 20th/early 21st C stuff in the stormtrooper book leave the low tech tanks and marching mobs in Codex IG?
Then GW could bring in some stuff that missing like UAVs for the STs or static Death Korps-type artillery for the IG.

If they do a "high tech" Guard and a "low tech" Guard...then people might stop whining about Marines and aim for Guard.
No thanks

No, its good for the codex. When you divide a codex up until it is only good at one thing, all you have left is a bland codex. The IG codex is a good middle-ground between all the army variants. If you want to be utterly specialised you pick up the Forgeworld rules.

Armys that only have one valid build rarely last for long. While I can understand the desire to seperate them it would kill the army for the most part. The best thing to do would be to give bonuses/penaltys to an army that builds a certain way like they did with the Guard codex a few editions back. Two printings ago I think it was.

Keep the codex as it is. It would just turn into another Inquisition mess if they split them. Everyone hates having two different Inquisition Codicies. Same thing.

Yeah, it would be a silly and bad idea that would only limit players from making interesting lists. The last thing 40k needs is MORE codices and MORE armies. Especially if they will be mostly the same anyhow....

Good answers, but I have to ask is the old gun line even viable any more? I've not seen anyone doing it. It seems the IG are now playing more like Eldar with fast skimmers and short range shooting and a few support units.

As long as you don't stick with old ideas, then yes, the "gun line" is still viable, though not necessarily in the classic "I've got 200 guys with guns and a couple of russes" style.
I'm planning a mechanized gun line that revolves around long-range shooting with a few support elements, and movement-blocking units.

I have seen the Gunline work, but you should have Straken in your army so that when the Boyz or Gaunts or whatever get to your lines you can actually stand a chance in CC.

In theory anything can still work (some thing more rarely than others). All it takes is being crafty in list building and battle tactics.

I still play it and do fairly well with it. I'm on top of both ladder and pyramid in our club. An no, it's not a 3-5 person group, it's 70+ members, 15-20 regular players on 40K night.

Not in the slightest. Why would you want to have a Codex that can only do one thing. Isn't the fact that the Codex can do multiple army types a good thing.
Besisdes the last time GW split an army in two we got the current 'Chaos' Codex and Codex aemons. No one wants that again.

Like HBMC said, it's a good thing that a codex can build multiple lists. If there's to be any criticism, it should be that codex can only make two viable types of lists, instead of a dozen or more different types.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I still play a traditional guard gunline army once in a while, but going mech is so much more obvious. Its kind of like Hansel and Gretel and GW is laying breadcrumbs to a mech army by making chimeras so cheap and vehicles in 5th better

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |
