Tell us what happened in your first-ever game of 40k. Successes, failures and completely incorrect rulings are all acceptable.

In my first game I played 1000pts of footsloggy Eldar against 1000pts of Inq/Marines. I don't remember the exact list, but it had the following;
Rangers (5?)
Banshees (10)
Guardians (10, brightlance)
Rangers (5)
Farseer
Dark Reapers (5)
War Walkers (3)

First off, I actually won this game. I remember being terrified of a Laspred that my opponent had, and hiding my WW's behind a tall building, out of LOS, but unable to shoot.
Basically, he ran grey knights across the feild, Reapers killed a squad of Tac marines, and WW's did nothing for the first turn. He shot back, killed a couple of banshees, 3 guardians.

On turn 2, the guardians one-shotted his pred , the WW's emerged and killed some GK's, the rangers died, the banshees ran forward to confont his uber-tooled Inq. Lord and retinue. The reapers killed another Tac squad.

The game basically continued in that manner, with banshees and reapers killing stuff. The guardians were annihalated in a cruel act of vengeance.

Heh... I seem to have given a mini-batrep... I don't expect this from everyone, just highlights will do.

My First ever game was Dark Angels vs Tyranids way back when 3rd edition first came out, played on the kitchen floor with baked bean hills.

Naturally I won due to RaWhammer

I remember my very first kill was one of my own Ultramarines: I had placed a Flamer behind him and didn't realise my mistake until he had died.
I had a similar incident a few weeks ago where I accidently vapourised a whole 400point Vanguard Squad using a Warhound's Inferno Cannon!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 2nd Ed. The only thing I remember is my opponents telling me that their Terminators got to shoot twice with their Storm Bolters because they had two barrels. Only the first in a loooooooong string of cheating and general assery from the people at Comics Plus.

are you suggesting the victory meant that something actually WAS worth a hill of beans?

First match was a trio of noobs playing 1v1v1, 500pts. My Space Marines vs Necrons vs. Tau. The Tau were nearly wiped out, as both myself and the 'cron player wanted killpoints and had trouble offing each other. I ended up winning by one KP, thanks to my mowing down some fleeing fire warriors with bolter fire. I actually ended up inflicting more wounds than there were models on the table, as the 'crons kept passing their WBB rolls. Nothing's more frustrating than watching your opponent put models on their side, time after time, only to roll some dice and stand them right back up again. He was so lucky, I think he only lost 3 or so warriors in the entire match, even though one squad spent 2 turns locked in CC with my dread and the other weathered several rounds of missile fire and a flamer template or two. Stupid resurrection orbs... But yeah, the game was sloppy, our tactics rudimentary (if not downright idiotic), and there were probably several minor rules violations, discounting those rules we completely passed over, out of ignorance. I still won it, though.

I believe my very first game was a game of me vs another newb (Necrons vs. Tau). Neither of us really knew what we were doing, but I ended up losing because of a poor army - I thought that kroot would be good, even on a terrain-free map. (Which they weren't. They got torn up by Warriors in shooting)

I first started playing in 2nd Edition so cannot remember my first ever game. But I can tell you that my regular opponents were Tyranids and Eldar. I was the whipping boy of the group. It was a rarity that I would win. I remember regenerating Tyranids that were impossible to kill, I remember Warp Spiders teleporting in, shooting and killing things then teleporting away to cover.

I've just picked the game up again. I played my first game yesterday in what must be 13 years? I played played an intro game in store. I choose Orks and he was Ultramarines. I had a 20 strong boyz mob, Warboss and 5 nobz. He had a two squads of 5 marines and a squad of Terminators. My Warboss and nobz died to the Terminators but my boyz destroyed a squad of marines on their first turn, engaged the Terminators and where then engaged by the other squad of marines and managed to wipe them both out! Sheer weight of numbers/attacks won the day for the green machine!

Unsurprisingly I'm going to collect Orks.

My first game was 3ed using a squad of Eldar Warriors in a massive beginner game GW style. I had no idea what was going on as there was about 10 kids approx. age 10 standing round, each with a unit trying to kill each other. (in the game, not literally =p)

I remember I had the warriors in a lovely battle line. Only to get hit with a flamer from the side and lose 8 out of 10. And since then I have been very wary of flamers, and other templates. Good job I learned early =]

My first game was 3ed orks versus marines. We thought the dirt/smoke effect from the bikes was based on where they had traveled, so they kept zipping back and forth in front of my foot boys to give them cover.

We were playing on a pool table with stacked book hills and the scenery from the started set (I still remember the little barrels and tank traps hastily glued together so we could play).

It was the Perth City GW Store in Australia.

I guess the usually have players choose the Ultramarines but I have played marines in the past and was interested in Orks. I think even if I had lost (and I could have easily as it was quite a close game) I would still be interested in the Orks.

Marines are the obvious flagship of 40K but for that reason alone, they're not appealing.

My very first game was a skirmish with 24 Uruk-hai scouts (Me), against 24 Moria Goblins (Friend). I won due to the fact that my friend got confused about the rules then gave up.

First 40k however, was me (Black Reach Orks) against the same friend (Black Reach Space Marines). We called it a draw after his little sister broke into his room and broke my Deffkoptas while we were having lunch. My friends reaction to the crime scene was "I could have sworn this door was closed".

my first ever match was 500 points necrons vs tau back in mid 4th ed. it was a necron lord, and two units of warriors against some tau stuff i don't remember.

i managed to pull out a win with decent understanding of the rules (i read the rulebook 2 or 3 times over before i played my first game) and a bit of luck.

My first game was a fustercluck. We decided to have a whole bunch of people who'd never played 40k before get together and play, while one guy who'd kind of read the rules tried to ref. Of course he ended up leaving 5 minutes in. It of course also had something like 2000 points a player and was a 2v2 or so. I was using my Dark Angels, one guy was borrowing my Ultramarines, and the other guys had Chaos and Orks I think. I'd painted up a bunch of 40k figures for a homebrew system I had at the time.

That was my first game with my own toys anyway. My first ever was when I was probably 6 or 7, in 2nd ed. I had some Blood Angels Terminators and they ripped open a tank and killed the crew. That's literally all I remember. Had a few games between there and when I actually started, but not many.

My first game was just before 5th Edition, with the Battle for Mc(Donalds). It was a tutorial game by an employee who became a good friend, Ray (his GF kicked the stuffing out of me at my first tourny). Anyway, my buddy Corey played the Tyranids, and I got stuck with the Ultrasmurfs. The assault portion of my Combat Squad got assaulted by his Gaunts and Stealers and, because Rending was withheld, I passed something like 20 armor saves on the Sergeant alone before he finally went down. I was waiting for it too, because the Missile Launcher would have (and did) taken out all the rest of his forces in one shot.

My first real game was just last week, with one that sort of counts the week before that.
2 weeks ago:
Me and 2 other guys were just getting into the game, so my lgs' owner lent the three of us his ork army to share.
We played an IG team with an airplane, and I was happy to see the deffkoptas kill it. We lost, but I learned a bit.

Last week:
I had built and scrounged enough of a CSM army to play a small tourney. I went against Tau, something with Robot suits, a bunch of kroot, and a sniper drone or two. He was a good guy. I lost, but he said I did pretty good for a first actual game. I learned to love my Thousand Sons, and that I need a Rhino for my berserkers. And then I realized I need some more money.

My first 40k game with my own army, and actually understanding the rules, was Eldar Vs. 3.5 Chaos back near the end of 3rd. It was painful, my banshees got tied up fighting a massive block of 20 CSM, my fire dragons did VERY little, the Farseer pretty much stopped the Guardian Defender squad from pissing their pants thanks to all those crazy psychic powers.

On the other hand the Wraith guard did some neat stuff, and essentially just waded a massive hole in the middle of his army. The Rangers were able to keep block number 2 of CSM down and my Dark Reapers working in tandem with my Dire Avengers finished off the unit.

My first actual game goes back a fair bit, 2nd ed SM and IG vs. Necrons and Orks. We didn't have enough models to form an army for any of the teams so we melded them... badly. The IG won thanks to their Meltaguns and Missile Launchers. Our understanding of the rules was very loose and we pretty much ruled that the Meltagun and the rocket Launchers were instant death if they hit.

Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

My first game was in 2nd ed. with Eldar. My list was something like this

Farseer
Avatar
Wraithlord (seems like it wasn't called wraithlord back then and had dreadnaught stats)
10 guardians (I think split into 2 squads of 5, with lasguns!)
5 dark reapers
5 banshees

I went to my LGS and got teamed up with another Eldar player (who happened to be about 9-10 yrs old), Against the local rules lawyer who was playing a Chaos army.

I can't remember too many details of the game other than my teammate kept flying away from the battlefield with his swooping hawks, and then landing them in the same place... I do remember a lord of change rampaging through our armies, and getting stomped pretty badly. I remember thinking on my way home "that wasn't as fun as I thought it would be" and I didn't play again for a few months. Luckily I went back and played against a really great guy the next game.

My first game of 40k was in 4th edition. We played on my mates bedroom floor using things such as shoe boxes for scenery. My mate had Marines and i had a crap load of Orks back then. We had to end play rather abrutley due a Bumble Bee the size of a small bird entering play. It came from the open window and disrupted our game sending us fleeing after failing our leadership checks for fear of being eaten alive.

I know i started playing shortly after 3rd edition came out. I played at the local game store, they used (before they moved) to have a separet game room that was basically another building. it had nothing but tables in it, ahhh the good old days. I am pretty sure it was just my vanilla marines vrs. dark angels.

Not my first game, but when 'jungle fight' rules came out, we played with them all night one night, and no realized what time it was. I was 16 or 17 at the time.... then all of a sudden my Dad walks into the room, and was like "... do you know what time it is??" and I was like, "no? why whats wrong?" my dad just stared at me and goes "its 330am, get home... NOW" and then he just turned around and walked out. The best part was that, the next day was my Junior Prom..... which was basically my first actual formal "date" and I was a zombie through the whole thing! I love gaming!!

and two days later my mom bought me a watch lol
