Right guys, advice needed, I have my own plans to beef up my howling griffons with typhoons and some devastators but I just really don't enjoy painting tanks! Strange I know. Reluctantly I have included an annihilator as a tank hunter but want to avoid the use of tanks as much as possible to keep the army as a hit and run strike force, but with the balls to keep slugging it with the heaviest of them and not get shot to pieces attempting to get in for the close kill. Any thoughts are welcome. Ta.

Drop Pod assault means you'll be dropping a twin-linked multi-melta next to enemy tanks on turn 1.

Fair point, my main opponent uses Chaos Marines so I'm thinking that what I want to do with the Griffons, and what they need to be to go toe to toe are two completely different things.
Although I do get this vision of a Mighty Ducks style flying 'V' of bikes backed up by speeders...

I'd say land speeders would be a good remedy  Possibly vanguard? Can they take meltas?

Welcome to dakka, dont forget you can add a melta and lascannon to your tac squads. also the devastors and and landspeeders mentioned earlier are also good ideas.
