Master never does that because when he does set it that high the shield would make hitting and grabbing things impossible because it causes him to have no friction. Space marine has strength and armor but is slightly slower and has a blind spot. which is his back. Spartans don't have this problem. Also the old saying that "a suit of armor is olny as good as its weakest point" holds great truth in this fight. both have lightly armored joints. But the spartan has a shield to help deflect hits to these regions for a time before it shuts down.

So Master Chief can see behind him?
Not sure about the small nuke thing... likely not true.

Well i read into the fluff for spartans and a spartan did get hit by a small nuclear device and lived. techniqally yes and no he doesn't the AI that almost all spartan 2s get helps them in this case. plus they will help them predict their opponents movements in major combat operations and in close combat. Spartans are also trained in many different martial arts.

AFAIK i have read all the background books...
The only incident i remember with a nuke was when
Spoiler:
They used a smallish one to destroy a covenant ship from the inside and were protected from the blast by a ridge

In the same novel
Spoiler:
The Spartans are forced to jump from a pelican whilst it was in mid-air and several died when they hit the ground since their shields failed. They had previously cranked them up as high as it would go

The second spoiler would have been Spartan III's, Spartan II's can survive massive falls, hell, even Noble 6 survives a orbital drop unaided, and he survives that (and hes a Spartan 3 to boot).

Now remember that Boltguns are a lot like brute shots. Except completely automatic. What weapons does a Spartan have that can kill a Space Marine? Well, argueably, rocket launchers, Splasers, Energy Swords, maybe Gravity Hammers, Fuel Rods, and thats about it.

Every single weapon the space marine has will one hit a spartan through his shields.

The shield means nothing. Masterchief lived because he was "lucky"

Being an older gamer I remember when marines weren't so fluffy. I base everything on rules. So space marines are strong, but can still be punched by guardsmen and be killed with lasguns. At this point the big difference that the spartan has a shield. I hate to say it but it looks like spartan wins.

If you go by fluff then the marine wins, but if you go by fluff then marines shoots lightning bolts from their eyes and fireballs out their arse like William Wallace.

Rules are an extreme abstraction, and are thus a fallacious base for a comparison, especially considering we don't have similar rulesets for Spartans. I'm not sure what being an "older gamer" has to do with anything, unless you mean you're going senile.

But if you want to base things on rules, look to the movie marines.

Actually they dont, I'd love to see one 5th edition codex where a space marine does either of those.

The shields are weak. They are made to STOP the spartan getting killed by the first couple rounds they get hit by, so they can take cover, recharge, and have at it again. Their armour is next to useless against covenant weaponry. Imperial Weaponry is even more powerful.

Basing the Spartans off fluff, and the Space Marines off rules is unfair. I dont know where any of you are getting the idea that Spartan shields are powerful. If a Splaser splatters them, A lascannon will, if a brute shot takes off their shields in 3-4 hits, a boltgun will too. There is seriously no grounds to say that a Spartans shields would help at all against a space marine. If it takes a single whack from an elite to take their shields of, a flick from a space marine will do it.

I love halo, MORE than 40k, but I still KNOW a space marine would win. Remember, a spartan probably wouldnt want to get hit from a UNSC sniper rifle, and Im pretty sure they are .65cal. The smallest bolt is explosive .75. Not good.

I base my decision on the dates. Halo is based year ~2500 and space marines (well we all know when ).

Space Marine wins hands down everytime because he has better weaponry in the end along with more enhancements than a spartan. I don't think a spartan's wounds instantly clot. They just simply have biofoam in their suit that injects into them which isn't the same.

Spartans want's to be Space Marine when they grow ur...

But seriously, Space Marines are the finest melee warriors in the galaxy. Mephisto tear Carnifex to shreds with his bare hands, Calgar puched Avatar in the head and he fall apart, Draigo....

Space Marines also have better armor, and they are genetically modified to the core. And they are fanatical over all else, and carry weapons that can blow many things out of existence...

This is not a contest at all. And people who say otherwise are nothing else buy Halo fans who compare MC to Draigo...

Space Marines have personal shields to and Spartans don't have 1 tone of armor on themself.

the Sparten relies too much on his shield while being little more then a regular old human(the augmentations arn't enough to bring him up to Marine status)

the Space Marine has layers of physical and biological protection.

the armor of a Space Marine is designed to withstand punishment. the curves allow for deflection of blows while its made of Ceramite. the Ceramite, being a ceramic material, absorbs shock rather then transferring it to the wearer. its also resistant to energy based weaponry due to its low heat conduction(meaning the armor absorbs the damage rather then transferring it)

then the marine has his physical properties.

2 hearts: obvious advantage, can lose one and survive. 2 result in an increased circulatory capacity meaning greater stamina and more powerful muscle movements.

Bone structure: fused ribcage means that its impossable for small projectiles to slip in between ribs to get at vital organs. also prevents the marine from suffocating due to weight on chest. the bones themselves are also strengthened with the ceramic compounds from the marine's diet.

Muscle growth: Muscle size is pushed to the max. Hormones from the Biscopea maintain muscle mass at optimum levels.

Larraman cells: these specilized blood cells cause a marine's blood to clot within seconds, meaning its nearly impossable for a marine to bleed to death.

Multi-lung: this allows the marine to breath poisoned atmospheres or even water.

Mucranoid: this does require a special procedure to activate, but when it is activated it protects his skin from heat and cold. it even allows the marine to be exposed to the vacuum of space for a period of time.
