Keep on enjoying GW's idea of "Hobby". we'll see how its going for you in a few months. I'm going to make it a point to put this post back up in your thread when you come back as another satisfied "plebe", "shill", or whatever FOTM name GW has for you.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I haven't given up on GW rules entirely.
I am putting together a fantasy elf army to play a game I haven't played in 17 years - so I'm not yet decided whether my ennui for 40k is an isolated case. I may enjoy WHFB, I may not. After 24-odd years, I just tired of 40k's 'upgrade' cycle.
I've never seen the need to restrict myself to one company's product, though, so having two games at any one time by two different manufacturers is "normal" for me.
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

I still buy models, but I uncovered plastic sprues in my basement
that I think I will assemble and paint before I work on any more
GW related projects.
However, when I want something to game with, I buy Warmachine
and Hordes stuff. Way, way more Warmachine and Hordes stuff.

Its difficult to read through your antagonism... are you suggesting I haven't been doing this for long? That in a few months, I will achieve some bizarre GW-hating nirvana?
The assumptions made in this thread are bizarre and arrogant.
I must be new to GW games, and I must not know how much "better" all sorts of other games are.
I've played GW games since 1986. Ive also played Battletech, Warzone, Star Fleet Battles, Sky Galleons of Mars, Great Rail Wars, Confrontation/Ragnarok, In the Grand Manner, Silent Death, Warmahordes, Flames of War, Infinity... I enjoyed them all to varying degrees.
But there will come a day, soon by your reckoning, where I will reach some enlightened state where I can be talked out of enjoying my favorite Toy Soldiers game?

What a laughably binary point of view. So you're either a dead-set GW fanboi decked out in shining white armour... or a rage-quitting hater?
You also make the classically flawed assumption that "Not liking GW = Not liking 40K/WFB/whatever" or, worse, that one must like GW in order to like their products or universe. This couldn't be further from the truth.
+1 on this.
I wouldn't say it is a ragequit, more the equivalent of that Monty Python sketch with the fish slapping dance. Using the analogy in the video below, GW is Terry Jones and I'm John Cleese.
I still love to play GW games. However, that doesn't mean I should stick my fingers in my ears and close my eyes when they continue with one crap policy decision after another.
"Peter - "ignorance is bliss"
Pacific - "Actually yes, I was a lot more happy just playing games before I started reading on the internet about all the BS that GW pulls.. ""
I'd suggest that makes you the fish, despite your delusions of grandeur.

Except that’s not what you did. The first thing you did was label people, and then divided them up into two back and white camps, those that enjoy GW games, and those that ‘ragequit’. As I said in my first post, that is a laughably binary point of view to hold because it does not allow for the far more common reality – there are loads of people that love 40K/fantasy/whatever (like myself) who simply cannot stand the company that makes them. And, again, liking 40K/Fantasy/whatever does not go hand-in-hand with liking GW.
If you want to start a thread about what we enjoy about GW games/the universe/etc. then that’s fine, but you don’t do it by first classifying those who dislike GW as ‘ragequitters’.

Oh, I see. I made an emotional statement on a message board that clearly only deals in rational, calm, well thought out, moderate statements.
Statements like:
" I promised I would stop buying from GW after all that business last year, and I have't given them a single penny since."
"People just got sick og GW's constant hubris and attitude towards us, and their prices are so out of this world we just can't fathom spending anymore on GW's games. "
"I stopped playing 2 years ago. The GW price gouging is ridiculous. 40 dollars for 10 space marines? They expect me to pay 4 bucks a model, or 10 for a terminator?"
"They owe it to their players to charge low prices. It is not fair that only the rich can play 40K or Fantasy or now LOTR. That they don't support the cheaper skirmish games, Mordheim and Necromunda, is a sign of the pure greed that permeates GW.
In today's modern market, not only should they halve their prices, but they should also supply the players with free rulebooks, codexes and the other items needed for the game. How much is a figure case? 50-60 dollars? You can guy a gun case for 10.
I've decided to change my hobbies from GW to golf and scuba diving. I am also saving up to get a sports car, there are several racing associations around here for amateurs. "
(this was my favorite. GW OWES it to its players to lower prices, while he's preparing to Golf, Scuba, and race sports cars)
"I hate GW with a passion"
"GW used to be a fun, 'cool' company, but now they are just a greedy, paranoid & out of touch corporate monstrosity "
(GW is Monsanto?)
One guy even has the GW logo crossed-out as his sig file. really?
You've focused on the word "ragequit", and ignored the point of the thread which was to hear from people who are still optimistic and excited about GW games, since the angry people ALREADY HAVE A THREAD (though I am starting to think this entire board might be devoted to that topic... am I wrong?)

Grr I hate GW so much I go to a forum based almost exclusively around their product and whine about it!
I genuinely enjoy 40k and the models. The game, while not perfect, is a lot of fun to play. It's suited more towards casual and narrative play, which is what I'm all about. The setting is the big selling point though, as it's so deep and huge. I get some fun out of reading Dune and other sci fi and seeing where all of 40k's fluff basically comes from. As for the models, I wouldn't play this game with as much zeal as I do if it weren't for the frankly incredible plastic kits they pump out so regularly.
I really don't like GW's corporate decisions, or their severe lack of marketing. I think the Finecast debacle could have been handled much, much better, and this is coming from someone who sees a lot of potential in the material. The prices are rough and the worldwide shipping embargo is horrible for a lot of gamers. Regardless, I still like their game designers, sculptors, Black Library writers, and most of the stuff they collectively put out. I wouldn't call myself a fanboy since I can see the faults of the company, but I really enjoy their products.

This North Korea-esque propaganda of GW being wonderful is more annoying then GW-bashing, most of which is grounded in real and rational criticism.
Is GW the king of the wargamining market? Yes. Do they come out with fun and enjoyable game with immersing backgrounds? Yes. Do they make fantastic looking miniatures? Yes. However, there are issues with prices, bad writing, balance, quality control, and treatment of its own customer base that are all legitimate complaints.

I have a lot of fun playing 40k with a close knit group of friends, some of whom I've known for 2 decades, others who I've met more recently. I know that my monthly 40k night is going to be a blast, indeed I drive about 2 hours to get there. The models are fantastic, the setting is engrossing, and the game is fun. Sure, I haven't bothered to get into the local (NYC) gaming scene even though I've lived down here for 5+ years, I'm still leery of Finecast models unless I can open them first, I groan every time prices go up, and I think Draigo's fluff is terrible. But 40k night is always fun, and has kept me close with a lot of friends that I'd otherwise probably never get to hang out with anymore. And at the end of the day, that's what it's all about: beer, pretzels, and POWER FISTS!

But Dakka would only have half the posters and twice the useful content without those people.
"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Some angry nerds on this forum. Why can't we be happy nerds?
Anyway, I've been into 40k since its inception, when I got my hands on the RT era stuff as a kid. Ive always been a total 40k nerd ever since I got sucked into it with the RT manual...it just totally captivated my imagination.
In those day however, there really weren't any gaming clubs or stores or really anyone who played the game unless you could suck your friends into it. So, pretty much all through my late teens and 20s I totally abandoned the Hobby.
Fast forward to lat year, in my 30s, i totally get hooked again and start repainting with a vengeance. Models were exhumed from a dusty box where they sat for 10+ yrs in my parents basement, stripped of their crummy paint jobs, refurbished and remodeled to current legal standards and fully repainted.
Many, many satisfying hours of hobbying were had in the process.
Now I'm actually getting into the game itself for the first time and enjoying the widespread popularity of it. I go to my FLGS every Saturday I can for gaming and chatting about the game with others that have the passion too. I'm only just getting into 5th Ed along with my friends, who were inspired by watching me rebuild my army from junk in boxes.
We're all learning it slowly and having lots of fun. Yes, the models aren't cheap. But there's also less effective ways you could spend your money and have nothing concrete to show for it. It's all relative.
I've definitely saved money by reclaiming old figures, but also spent quite a bit buying new models, especially tanks and vehicles. Not to mention paints and other hobbying materials and supplies.
Anyway, theres a story from a relative newb to th gaming side of things. I do enjoy the game, even though I'm not especially good at it. I come here to read about tactics and strategy etc, but once the math hammer stuff and bitching comes out on a given topic, it seems to slightly decrease my enjoyment of it, and I find myself doubting my army choices.
I think I'll always be a painter first and gamer second.
At any rate I'm interested to see what 6th Ed holds in store.

I have my first 2000 point vanilla army, and currently thinking of starting another army. Most likely will be chaos, but still shopping around.
So for the most part I really like GW stuff, also out of the three finecast boxes that I have bought only one had any problems and it was very minor.

.
Ive got a buddy who literally has NO money. About 4 years ago he dusted off his old chaos marines from 10 years ago, and stripped and disassembled them all. Slowly but surely he rebuilt them, occasionally getting a new figure or two for a birthday or christmas... he rocks about 8k worth of CSM in Apocalypse now... Its very reminiscent of Johnny Cash's "One piece at a time", lol.
You know, I would really encourage everyone who is here to talk about how much they like GW to just ignore the trolls. I frankly can't believe they have nothing better to do than invade this thread with their negativity. Just ignore each and every post. Seriously. Don't even reply or acknowledge.
I LOVE GW. Ok, well, wait - I don't like the corporate culture of GW so much, and I do feel it's lost some of the spirit of when Gav, Jervis, et al were still around. But I still love love love the models and the background. The aesthetic of 40k is just COOL, and there is no two ways about it.
I just finished lovingly converting and painting my own take on Chapter Master Gabriel Seth (check my gallery images! ), and the joy and sense of accomplishment I got was indescribable. GW products make me HAPPY, and they have for a very long time.
And what's wrong with that? If that makes me a brain-washed monkey, so be it. I fail to see how it's any skin off anyone else's nose.
Thanks GW!

Best post ever. We all still like toy soldiers, it's not like we've gone and thrown all our stuff on eBay and started playing with pokemon cards instead.
A lot of us are even still playing GW games, just using alternative models.
Take the new Vampire Counts for instance. Whole lot of people who love the new release out there, but will only be buying the characters, monsters and special units from GW because mantic offers all the core stuff at a third of the price. Doesn't mean they've rage-quit, they're still playing fantasy and have bought the latest army book. Does that make them "anti-GW" because they've started purchasing X bit of plastic from X non-GW source? Nope, not really. Loads of good stuff out there these days, and buying it doesn't make you a "hater".
It's not "all or nothing", and the reverse is also true for people who primarily buy non-GW product. I might be crazy about mantic, but that doesn't stop me from buying GW when they make something that is good and reasonably priced (new plastic character kits for fantasy).
The anti-GW sentiment can be summed up as is primarily anti-"the idiots that run the company", and not anti-"the designers, sculptors and artists who keep making cool stuff for the company".

I tend to view GW and its attendant offspring a bit like fine dining. Mantic, Infinity et al, in my opinion, have models that aren't as good as GW's models. But they're a lot cheaper. This being the equivalent to a kebab on a night out. Filling, tasty, and most importantly cheap enough to not miss the money it cost. GW's models on the other hand, have the best models evar, in my opinion (note that bit please, it's crucial). But they're more expensive than a crack addiction. So GW's models are like a dinner at the Ritz, quality. But a lot more expensive than the Kebab. What meal (and therefore models) you prefer, is entirely up to you. But I like to pay for quality (or the fact the models are made in GB, not in the developing world, but whatevz). I don't understand the fervour people defend GW, but the level to which some people go to nail them to a cross is equally baffling.
