That's an impressive feat. How did the Nid player mitigate it's Ork Biker resilience long enough to kill so much?

tbh it only had 1 wound at the end of the game and nearly died to my talon but that vector strike is not messing about

how an attack that automatically hits doesn´t count as a sucessfull roll to hit?

Because you did not roll? It's the same reason why you can't use insta-hit attacks and blasts for snap fire. Because there is a roll to hit required, and they do not match that requirement.

There are a few nice tricks in the new book, but nothing universally powerful like Serpents, Heldrakes or even DoM.
My main concern is that our best options revolve around cover save buffs from Venomthropes or the Lictor / GtG / Synapse trick. Both Tau and Eldar - which are already strong codexes to begin with - have a built-in hard counter to these thanks to Markerlights and Wave Serpents.

Even without the ignore cover of those weapons, Venoms are only T4, which makes them very easy to wound, even with a 3+ cover save.

Another unit that got better was the hive guard, no longer synapse depending to get ignore line of sight and ignore cover rules, now its really watever with those impaler cannons since the weapon removed that weakness so you will see them quite often.
You might also see zoanthropes for a number of reasons but mainly 1 of them few with choices to roll on the table to get catalysm and other powers on 50pt model, also the brood just test once for their powers to cast it multiple times. (bigger synapse bubble, bigger catalsym bubble to pick on a wider choice of targets to benefit from fnp so on)
Venomthrope will also been seen alot times to counter the lack of exposure tyranids have, now getting +2 to the cover save and them attacking at I6 with the lashwhips seems really nasty.
and of course, every 1 loves flyers so haywire missiles from the hive crone will be likely to be seen outhere, mostly as a hunting couple party (2 crones at least)
those are probably the gold jewel of the tyranids out here along with the mawlock
We may also see exocrine as "plasma shooting source" mainly for the big blast plasma shoot with no get hot and their enhance bs if he stays still
Re: Tervigons. With them no longer passing AG/ TS on to Termagants, terms took a massive hit. Getting both of those biomorphs doubles the cost of a termagant. The "destroy what I spawned" radius also doubled.
Re: Hive Guard. They may not be AS dependent on Synapse, but their cost went UP and their BS went DOWN.
Re: Zoanthropes. They actually get to use LESS powers than the previous version. They previously were all ML1, so each could use a psychic power. Now, they are ML2 as a brood. Warp Blast is WC2, so your brood of 3 Zoanthropes can use EITHER Warp Blast (for both of their WC), OR their other power (leaving them with 1WC, which isn't enough for Warp Blast). I would call that a nerf.
Re: Venomthropes. Yes, you will probably see these. For about a turn. And "really nasty" in CC? They get 2 WS3 attacks, which are nice at Poisoned(2+), but still 2 WS3 attacks. Oooh, once per game I can pop toxic miasma at I1 (assuming the Venomthrope survived that long) for a S3 AP- hit. Wooooooo. *finger twirl*
Re: Crone. It is straight up awful. It's main weapon can't be used against other flyers. It's 4 Tentaclids are One Use Only, and with BS3 you're likely to miss with 2 of them. So that's 2 HPs you might strip off a flyer, assuming your T5 4+ armor flyer doesn't get shot to death first. Quad guns are twin linked, wound on 2s and ignore your armor save. So it has S8 vector strike, BFD. With the way flyers and swooping FMCs move, it is insanely easy to keep your flyers away from a Crone.
So your "Crown Jewels"? Looks like they're made of Cubic Zirconium.
How exactly are zoanthropes nerfed? All that has changed is that they now act as a brotherhood of psykers, so they roll once for their power and the enemy denies once. Warp lance then gets as many shots as there are zoanthropes in the brood, so you aren't 'losing' any powers, you just aren't required to roll 3 psychic tests to use 3 warp lances (or 2 and 2). In addition to them being able to take another power from the nids table for added utility, the fact that they are synapse AND went down by 10 pts each means they got significantly buffed.
Also, if you didn't notice the crones missiles are twin-linked if you shoot at other flyers, so more likely to miss just 1 instead of 2. And if they focus on your crones, that means that flyrants will live longer, who are far more important than the crones in most cases.

The broken lists will consist of:
2 Flyrants, same as before.
A mix of 3 harpies and/or crones
All of the flyers starting on the board close to some venomtropes, preferably hidden in the terain.
3 Mawlocks.
Whatever troops and synapse you can scrape together. Perhaps outflanking 5 man squads of genestealers going to ground on objectives.
Other units we will see that we sometimes saw during 5th edition codex:
Zoantropes (who got better (1 exstra power) and cheaper) Dakka carnifeses. Perhaps also carnifexes with adrenaline glads in an MSU like list.

A trio of Zoanthropes:
- Only has access to lacklustre codex discipline
- generates 2 powers instead of 6
- has 1 less warp charge to work with
- cannot de/buff a unit and still fire Warp Blast
- can lose an entire shooting phase to 1 deny the witch or failed psychic test
- No longer has access to Mycetic Spores
Plus they were Synapse in the previous book as well, so the only thing they gained is a slight points reduction, while they lost so much versatility.

I should have stated that they are 'still synapse', which makes them more valuable now because of the new IB.
Personally, I always stuck with warp blast/warp lance on all of my zoans because rolling on other tables is too much of a gamble (unless you're after a primaris) and makes it harder to build your list. So yes I suppose for those who used zoans for more buffing/debuffing with BRB powers then they may seem nerfed (i just never used them that way).
You could argue about an 'all-or-none' shooting phase being a nerf, some will see it that way and others wont.
I do agree the lack of pods is an issue, and the zoanthropes need to be used differently because of it.

I think crones will be a big deal this edition. They are cheap, can chew up light fighters with ease and are surprisingly good at killing skimmers. You just fly over one. vector strike it then use the drool cannon on rear armor. You may not pop it but you have a good chance of glancing it to death.

I want to point out, again, that there was no doomsaying anywhere near this magnitude when Tau and Eldar dropped. Both had mostly good buzz in the run-up to the full codex leaking, and people knew units like Riptides and Wave Serpents were going to be good once the actual rules were out (they might not have known exactly how good, but they at least knew these units weren't bad). Virtually nobody was out there saying Tau or Eldar were nerfed, weak, a step down, or anything but stronger than the older dexes. There were complaints about individual units for sure (everyone knew Howling Banshees were screwed right from the start) but the consensus was that both dexes were going to be fairly strong.
This revisionist history is driving me crazy.
How many people were complaining about "Codex: Markerlights", the loss of Multi-Trackers and how everything was ruined because Railguns on Broadsides weren't S10 anymore? Hardly "revisionist", at least not in the case of Tau.

I love kit bashing etc but I think with just the hive/tyrant guard kit and some 40mm bases it would be pretty easy to convert some nice looking biovores. That's my plan anyway

That's what we'd enjoy doing... but as we're involved in an upcoming GW store tournament, we need the correct models. Policy is they won't us all to proxy, say, our Hive Guard. Luckily there's a helpful manager who will hopeflly lend us a couple to try them out. Hence the reason I will be trepanning the trygon in the next couple days...

As I recall, there were about 3 people complaining about that in the "What do you think of the new Tau 'Dex" thread, and all 3 were being beat down by everyone else saying that they were crazy, and that the Codex was awesome.

No it's ok your right he is wrong, case in point automatically passing dang terrain still means you took the test even though no dice are rolled so initiative is still dropped if assaulting, this is the same, the dice count as having been rolled and have a predetermined result, a hit, even though no physical dice have been rolled.
Edit: unless it specifically says rolls to hit maybe?

Just a thought on combos, 3 dakkafexes with a prime that joins the unit. Sure it is 575 points before the prime upgrades, but that unit could put out some serious hurt, wouldn't have to worry about synapse, and if a venomthrope is behind them and they are in cover, it would be a tough nut to crack for sure.

You just fly over one. vector strike it then use the drool cannon on rear armor. You may not pop it but you have a good chance of glancing it to death.
It's definitely the unit I'm most undecided on myself. It looks pretty good on paper but it just seems so vulnerable. I'm looking forward to the Battle Reports being posted to get a feel for how they'll do against different forces.

I was really hoping that Venomthropes would become independent characters and be able to leave the brood to join other units. Still, so long as your not facing cover save denying weapons they are still much better then the 5th ed codex version with the 6th edition FAQs.

Making venomthropes and warriors able to interact sorta like Royal Court members (making them characters) would have made for very nice interactions on the field. It would have made a good way to protect broods with cover saves and would have made a CC melee entertaining with the Sgt challenging the Warrior/Venom attached.
