If you want a grimdark sci-fi reboot, do Blake’s Seven. Except they'd get it wrong and make the protagonists heroes.

was indeed, and by bod it was dreadful, who'd have thunked that mashing the worst of nu-BSG and Stargate with no money and very bad actors would turn out so awful. even the swerve intro underfunded sci-fi averageness towards the end of the run didnt help

Pretty sure Buck Rogers is stuck with a bizarre IP issue, where one person owns the copyrights, but another party owns the publishing rights (?) and they've never been able to get on the same page. I swear I read something last year about some ongoing litigation over the issue.

I think the issue is that Buck started as a book and was turned into a comic strip and then when the huge amount of racism in the original story was no longer allowed it was rebooted as a comic again. Now the book and the comics share Ip but the individual stories and some characters are owned separately depending on when they were done. Now the book rights could be used to make a film but no one wants that because racism and the comic stories still need both parties who cannot agree. Basically it’s a mess of Robotech proportions

Also Buck is technically 6 years older but it’s actually less because he was not actually called buck in the first couple of stories, I still think Flash was better mind

John Carter was still better than both but that ship sailed thanks to the mouse fething it up.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

The rights issues behind Flash Gordon are the reason we have Star Wars - George Luca’s wanted to do a Flash Gordon film, but couldn’t get it sorted so he had to make his own knock-off instead.

Well, the reboot is now simply supposed to take place in the BSG universe- hopefully on another Battlestar, and not another colony like Caprica.

I'd love to see something dealing with the Colonies fighting each other before a Cylon outbreak of hostilities, emphasizing more of the military and less of the political.

I don't know how accurate it is, but nBSG always seemed to me like the start of the post-9/11 trend for making TV shows super dark and gritty.

"The 75mm gun is firing. The 37mm gun is firing, but is traversed round the wrong way. The Browning is jammed. I am saying "Driver, advance." and the driver, who can't hear me, is reversing. It won't have Mara Jensen, so it will be a pale imitation of the original. I'm just hoping for a series with a sense of danger that doesn't dive headfirst into grimderp territory.

BSG is an extremely dark premise. And like most good science fiction, it used its setting to explore the real world of its day -- in this case the post-9/11 period.

Have to reiterate this. S1 and S2 especially, before the whole metaphysical train got rolling, was exceptionally pointed social commentary on post-9/11 America, especially as it interfaced with middle eastern conflicts.

The New Caprica insurgency was an incredibly gutsy plot arc.

The BSG reboot from the 2000s was great sci fi until the final four plotline and a bunch of silliness ensued. It is what it is, no changing it now...but the quality of the show did vary at times. But when it was good, it was real good.

The idea of returning to that vision of BSG is kind of exciting. But like with anything these days I think setting low expectations is a good idea. If you expect the worst then maybe it won't be as disappointing. If anything we'll get some sweet new ship designs for ares BSG tabletop game.

BSG suffered a lot in the middle of the show (season 3?) due to the writers strike at the time. Heroes suffered the same issue.

Season 3 was awful but I do feel it picked up a little bit before the end. That jump Galactica did into the basestar in the final season was a fantastic scene.

I'm pretty sad Caprica wasn't continued but it was just moving to slowly to be any good.

I didn't like the ending for a variety of reasons. However, once I realized that Head Six and Head Baltar were reformulated Seraphs from the original series, somehow I got a little bit better with it. Or at least the angelic beings guiding them part.

You can see the lightship in one of Starbuck's paintings.

Didn't the original writers leave the show and take with them their original plans for the remaining cyclons and plot lines? That's what I was told by friends who kept up with that stuff.

What's the difference between a reboot, remake etc?
I think what a few of people are doing are asking for are prequels (ie: the human/cylon war) within the same universe.

To me a remake is the same (or more or less same) story with new actors.
A reboot is using the same settings and most of the same character names, but with different actors and story NOT in the same timeline or universe. Or think they're different "universes" like Toby Maguire, the amazing spiderman and MCU spiderman.

To me many of the best parts of scifi is when you have a certain technology or event that is explored to the extreme. Like Soylent Green was exploring massive populations for example. BSG was (arguably) what if humans had forgotten about earth and had some reason to travel there again. Losing the cylon war was that reason.
So what are the main parts of a "reboot" of BSG which needs to remain the same, so we know it's BSG? To me it's:
Humans, Cylons, 13 tribes, searching for "earth", ragtag fleet led by a battlestar, star vipers.
What happens within that is pretty much up in the air - maybe we do or don't get "human" cylons, maybe we have political intrigue or not. What about the fuzzy pet thing that romped around with that kid?

But I for one hope they don't go down that weird "god did it"... almost literally deus ex machina crap at the end. It was rushed and disappointing. Either establish there is a spiritual/mystical element to the universe with rules at the beginning, but don't do a millitary sci-fi with political intrigue and then change it.
