ldd - Obviously

Not a problem, always glad to let peeps know what they've got coming

Well I have no plans for mine....yet But they are cool!

Dr H - I try my best Glad you approve.

weety - Thank you. Who knows, they may even see some colour at some point

Ok, not a great deal done, but did come up with an idea for the latest LOER comp http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/629845.page

I'm thinking of a steam-punk style road accident:

Rough sketch - Neo-Londinium, heart of the Electric Empire: A one way street in the rough district of Mek-Town, home to The Clockwork Bordello, the Electro-Coil Inn, Dirty Vik's Steam Emporium and other nefarious dives. Construction site on one side of the road, buildings and an alley on the other. A roadster has collided with an automaton. A police tread-bike has turned up at the scene, and there's a variety of bystanders looking on - norms, servo-punks and mecha.

Not sure if that'll be the actual car used - as some of you mayrecall, that's a partial build that was originally destined for the grots. If that's not legal then it'll b another three-wheel design.

And started on some of the automatons....

Your standard tracked robo-servant, a large steamy R2 unit, and a pair of carrier legs....although what it's actually carrying I have no idea yet

Right, off to wind the clock-springs and shovel some coal......

Thanks! they look interesting and about Chimera sized, interesting take on the set up inside and also the hatches as firing shields, up to 8 men can fire out of it realistically, as opposed to the GW Chimera set up.

Yeah that Multi-ped looks of a big chunky size!

Vik - There will definitely be some kind of vehicle there A full-on steam powered automobile may have to wait till after this piece, but I'm thinking I might like to spend some time exploring this world....

Slightly more done to the dio....

Warehouse detail:

Added a strip of plasticard to the bottom of the brickwork...

Then added a very thin strip to the top of that strip....

Then added some blocks below that....

Hoping for a worked stone look for the base of the building.

Added some I-beams to the top, and some thin strips up the corner...

Went back and forth a lot with how to top the walls, eventually went with the I-beam to act as a kind of conduit for various wires and ables that will be strung along. Went with a re-inforced corner basically to avoid some tedious brick work on the corner Leaving that corner strip higher than the beam for now as I haven't decided whether it will extend past the bricks or not yet.

Added some more re-inforcements on the horizontal, and started to add some vents....

The current plan is to not finish the interior at this point - the diorama is meant to be viewed from the front, and I know full well that I could get caught up adding all sorts of detail inside. However I felt there needed to be some basics in place for me to work with later.

And added the (interior) roof....

Still trying to decide on a suitable texture for the exterior roofing on this one, though I have now settled on a flat roof.

Stuck a sheet of plasticard to the cork covering the pavement and building area. I'm planning on using the cork texture as the road surface, so this brings everything up a bit from the road.
Then added a couple of thin strips to act as the kerbstones...

Then laid the paving...

I did use textured card here rather than cut the individual slabs out myself - mainly because I had the stuff, and figured I really need to start using some of y stuff rather than just hoarding it

Also cut windows and doors out of the brick textured plasticard I'm using for the bordello (slightly different patterns for the warehouse and the whorehouse) and then used that as a template for cutting the foamboard structure. Doors and windows will be embedded in the foamboard, and lintels will be added.

Then put the pieces into place to check everything was still looking right...

Still debating whether the lower floor will get a 'bay window' displaying the goods a la red-district style, or will just be a blank wall. Or possibly a window onto a sitting-room.....but I'm thinking it would either be an area that wasn't visisble to the outside if it was for waiting clients, or an area for advertisng the wares....

So, not a lot happened overall, but I thnk I've spaced it out enough to look like a rea update

Cam - Thanks a lot man! It's....a place, yeah, I thin we're safe to say it's a place...we'll leave it at that.....

Continuing to struggle with my mojo, but figured a small update on some LOER stuff might be alright

So, realised that all the measuring and cutting I'd done on the foamboard and plasticard for the windows was based around the wrong sized parts Or, to be more accurate, that I'd originally decided to just use the inner part of the frames, and realised it would not only look better with the whole thing, but also fitted the width of the foamboard walls better. The window frames I had were actually casement windows with the arch above them - one of the reasons I'd decided to leave off the outer parts originally - so I had to carefully trim them down square - couldn't be doing with figuring out brick archways above all the windows.

After getting the fit right I then stuck the two walls together.

And decided that now was a good time to start getting the floors in place for later internal work. Half-mil plasticard for the follr, with a couple of i'beams to rest them on - I'll think about planking them up at some point in the future. Decided a bit of support structure to keep everything square was in order, then added a bit of flimsy plasticard to act as the ceiling of the lower storey.

Once the floors were in place I realised that I didn't want rectangular sections for the floors - they needed to be triangular to fit in the dio properly

So I ripped out all the floors, chopped them to size and glued them back in place again When they were rectangular I was going to leave them open so you could see the i-beams in place, and maybe a bit of wiring, debris and the odd rat. They're a bit messy after the hasty re-fit though, so now I'm thinking I may blank them off with a plasticard strip and just paint it black.

Added the opposite pavement (minus a couple of slabs where the construction site has 'over-run'), a few paving slabs down the alley, a couple of drains in the gutters (completely invisible in this shot...may be just visible as background for some guys in the previous post) and splashed some black and grey around just to get a feel for how things looked.

And then had a look at the current lay-out to check it still works ok.

And that my chums is where we're at......

Live long and prosper......

Warboss - Thanks alot!

ldd - Thanks Roy! The little vehicle's main body is the old sentinel - the second version, not the original egg one, with Gravis wheels and sntinel exhaust as spotted. The front wheels are from Brother Vinni's securiton.

Not a massive update at the moment, more of a query.

As mentioned previously I had to re-do the floors in the brothel after realising they overhung the dio base. I'm now wondering whether I should do the same for the roof?

If I do the roof will be cut off along the blue line....which fits with the rest of the building, but strikes me as looking a little off somehow.

So thoughts....full roof, or cut-off roof?

Any diorama where you have to cut off the overhangs will look a little weird. The very fact that the buildings are incomplete starts that whole odd feeling. But I like the slanty roof and I think it's important to put aside your discomfort and create a consistent theme.

Tricky decision. I would say, that as you have gone so far to cut the floors down, then the roof should match. Then you can imagine the imaginary cut-off from the rest of the imaginary world that is has been cut out of...

I agree that the roof really should be slanted - think I just needed to put the options out there to check reactions - thanks guys

Can't go with the painted backdrop as I do intend to come back to the interiors at some point - as long as I can stay away from them long enough to get the rest done

So, how does it look with the cut-away roof?

Let's have a look at where we're at....

First off, a bit more colour to the base, plus a fence, plus a manhole cover...

A couple more gubbins to the warehouse exterior, plus some of the obligatory rivets...

Some lintels, some gubbins, and even a touch of paint to the brothel....

And the layout, plus added flash just to throw the colours off

And that about covers it for now.....

Weird I posted about the cut away roof section but it has not posted

Anyway looking good my man the little details are really adding the sense of realism to this diorama, I like the addition of the fence as it seems to expand the area more so.

I think the cut away roof was the right choice all though my earlier post would have disagreed with it, so good call and obviously a reason it did not post

Couple of questions is that a walkway between to 2 buildings ?

Also have you considered adding some kind of guttering sorry dont want to add to your work but even in the future world it must still rain

Anyway looking awesome

ldd - Thanks - just hope I can get more of the detailing done before the deadline

Cutaway roof was really the only sensible choice with the rest of the layout - might have worked if I'd left all the bordello floors rectangular, but would have just contrasted too strongly against the cutaway floors. I knew in my heart that it needed to be so, just needed to put it out there before going with it

Kind of - it is a walkway, and it is between the buildings physically, but it's not designed as a means of getting from one building to the other. I see it more as the denizens of Mek-Town have added walkways, small rooms and the like wherever they can throughout the area, this just happens to be the end of one such run. It could even be connected to a fire escape further back along the alley - who knows?

It does indeed rain, however each roof has a large umbrella in place, connected to a series of small fires. When the rain extinguishes more than one fire a small steam circuit is tripped which unfiurls the umbrella. Once the inclement weather has passed it is a simple task for your robo-servant to head roofwards and re-light the fires.

Actually I have considered gutters, at least for the bordello - with it's flat roof the warehouse has drainage built into the roof (which you may or may not see ). I've been waiting till I've finalised how I'm working the roof before adding the guttering though, as that will ahve an effect on it's placement. I thought I had some roof-tile-patterned plasticard in my stash (I'm using this project as an excuse to actually make use of various bits that have been hoarded for a rainy day - if I don't use them now they'll just sit around for another few years ), but the only ones I could find were too small a scale to work well, so jury's still out on that one....

Dr H - Thank you sir!

Today, I have been mainly painting tiny bricks....

Figured that red would be a suitable colour for window and door frames on the bordello. Not convinced with the lintels so far - not sure if they should stand out a bit more from the brickwork.

Warehouse starts off a bit grimier than the whorehouse, but they'll both be getting weathered and dirtied - Mek-Town is a dirty, steamy, seedy kind of place

Hopefully have some more to show later today - progress is being made with the automatons and the vehicles...(I think..)

LMAO I actually believed that mechanism for the rain

I see your point as to the flat roof I actually meant for the brothel more so, love the brick work very realistic especially picking out individual bricks

Also the metal work is nicely done the mix of metals finishes, once you add the weathering there will be nothing stopping you.

All those bits hidden away for a rainy day yet when it rains can you find them I think you have raised your standard on this one mate I just can't wait to see the cars added to this now
