CthuluIsSpy wrote: How is Dany a Bieber fan? Are decent people considered to be Bieber fans now?
Okay, okay, this is my fault. I was making a joke. Dany is not a Bieber fan. We should stop saying that. She is, however, just a teenager. As hardened and world-wise as she is, she just wants puppies and hugs from hunky boys sometimes.
Now that is understandable.
I wonder how long it will take for her to turn into Shinji or Asuka...
I just made a NGE reference in a GoT thread...have we reached nerdvana?

Hulksmash wrote: The books are already on pace for that....The first three stand as one of the greatest books I've ever read in a series. Books 4 and 5 undo all that good work and make it a series I'm barely hanging into and that's mostly because the show is so good.
I guess we all have differant tastes. The whole series has been riveting for me.
We do. The last two books felt like they were treading water and didn't feel like anything was moving forward. They were filled with new POV characters when he couldn't keep up with the ones he had and they didn't add much (if anything) to the story. He turned a strong female character into a simpering teenage girl.
Honestly the only good things I feel to come out of the last two novels are Arya and Cersai's story lines and the growth of Jamie's character. And those are books that took 12 years combined to write....
But to each their own. I guess when you started reading the series is likely to have a heavy impact on how you feel about it. I readily acknowledge that since I've been reading since they pretty much came out I have higher expectations for novels that take more than half a decade to write.

That is certainly fair. I've been in that boat before.

I still think as its a a song of Ice and Fire - the Dragons will be pivotal
Spoiler:
Dragonglass may be made by Dragons- and one army in the world (though not in Westeros) has plenty of warriors, and dragons to produce glass for them. Imagine Danerys astride a dragon, above an army of Unsullied with Dragonglass pikes staring down an army of white walkers headed by huge ice spiders and other unspeakable and unnameable horrors from beyond.
The Lord of Light is just to me... weird. I don't understand who they are directly opposed to, or what their angle is in interfering with Westerosi politics.
Spoiler:
Dragonglass is not made by dragons - it is simply the name the Meisters of Westeros have given to Obsidian, which is a type of volcanic rock.
The Temple of Rholer are just like every other religion. Their aim is to convert non-believers to their religion. Of course, the fact that Rholer actually appears at face value to give actual favours/power to his followers helps lend credence to their beliefs that all the other gods are simply false idols.
As for Dany...
Spoiler:
A lot of her regression back to more of that scared little girl mentality with no clue what as to what she should be doing, is because she has 0 true advisors around her now... Barriston Selmy is no advisor/lord, merely a shield to keep her safe, while Grey Worm and her Unsullied are simply automaton killers who only understand the battlefield.
Darrio is also almost certainly the real 'betrayal of love' Dany was warned about in Quarth by the red-masked woman.
What Dany needs is to have Ser Jorah back by her side as he's the only truly loyal advisor she's ever known/had. While yes, like most others he wants to bang her, he's also one of the very few people in the world she can actually trust and he's never once given her bad/false advice.
And with him comes the added awesomesauce that is Tyrion!
Once she has those two with her, I think we'll see the Dany of 'Storm of Swords' back in action.

I definitely agree 100% with Hulksmash that the first 3 books are miles better than the last 2. Book 4 in particular was an absolute chore, I almost couldn't get through it. It's like he ran out of ideas after the Red Wedding, the story kinda comes to a screeching halt.
Definitely looking forward to the next season, I really liked the Red Viper and can't wait to see him in action.

Spoiler:
Dragonglass may not be forged by dragons, but the only other weapon that is incredibly deadly to White Walkers are Dragon Forged Blades, Valyrian Steel, which Westoros has a decent amount of seeing as every house seems to have an ancestral Valryian Steel Blade. Also, as Dany has Dragons, she can eventually forge Valryian blades herself.

I'm totally with you on the latter half of the post.
Spoiler:
On the origins of Dragonglass though, it wouldn't have the name if it didn't occur from dragon fire being tossed onto suitable material- like sand. Certainly obsidian usually occurs from volcanoes, or the gods forging it beneath the earth, but if there were creatures flying around able to breathe fire as hot as a volcano I see no reason they couldn't create the substance. We can synthesize diamonds today, and that requires way more heat and pressure than obsidian.

You know, as far as I'm aware, very few religions actually seek converts. It's pretty much just Christianity and Islam, and possibly Buddhism as well, but I don't recall hearing about missionaries from any other faith.
Not to turn this into a religion thread or anything.

Wasn't it a Valyrian term? "Dragonglass" (obsidian) and "dragonsteel" (valyrian steel)?

Spoiler:
So much this. Every bad thing that happens to her is the result of mercy and compassion, while every triumph is the result of brutality and treachery. Jorah was the only advisor urging ever greater brutality that she trusted. Without him there, she's lacked the reassurance that yes, that is in fact the best course of action.
It also served to tread water at Meereen while the rest of the story caught up; it would have been better had he planned ahead and had more cities to take, or something, but since things were meant to jump to where they are now it's understandable it got bogged down. It's nothing compared to how much The Wheel of Time bogged down after the fifth book or so (it's been about a decade since I read that, so I can't remember much more than it slowed to a crawl and nothing much happened after a certain point) though, as quite a bit did continue to happen through Feast and Dance; it was just that the big flashy stuff in Westeros was over, and the main thread of the story had to wait for a bunch of stuff to happen.
Mr Morden wrote: but then I have little interest in the Starks, Night Watch, the Wildings or the "elves"
I strongly suspect - again, without having read the books, and having them spoiled for me, that the Night Watch (or at least the fight against the others) is the real focus of the story, and all the stuff about the Iron Throne and the War of the Five Kings is an elaborate red herring.
Basically, yeah. It's A Song of Ice and Fire: it's an epic battle between good and evil, but with realistic characters and a pile of grade A world building.
