I don't know about you, but I'm getting fed up of seeing the same range of "Stone" or "Tarnished Metal" finish on this thing, so I thought I'd do something a little different and more in keeping with my main army...

I was going for a more " Hall of Heroes " look, hence the lack of weathering. What say you, dakka ?

It's a nice paintjob, but the crack on the shield looks out of place on the shiny model!

Ancient cultures used to paint their statues, considering the throw-back feeling of 40k, I think it's very appropriate.

First off, I love this terrain piece, no matter what anyone does with it. That said, yours is certainly unique. I haven't seen ANYONE paint theirs up yet in anything other than some variety of stone/metal finish. Good job. I was thinking about getting one and using one of those spray paints with the hammered metal finish.

Thanks guys, like I said I thought I'd do something different - now I'm thinking of getting a few more to do as different Chapters and make a "Hall of Heroes" level for my window display.

Thanks, it's the first time I've tried for a marble effect. Planning on doing something similar on the Aquila (though not as densely veined)

Thanks, Ruckdog. The lettering is based on a 13th Century Gothic script font, though slightly simplified.

Looks great !!

I'd suggest filling in the cracks on the next one before painting it, though.

The marble effect is really nice and I'd like to see a whole statue done up like that, even.

Now THAT would be awesome. If I had the money for the models and paints, a place to show them off, and time to get them done (assuming I had already finished my own sea of gray plastic), I'd be all over that idea. Sigh.

It's been mentioned already, but I really do love the lettering on the shield. I know I've seen a similar font, before, but I can't remember where... I need to dig through my manuscript facsimiles and find something I like. I'm just nerdy enough (as a medievalist, that is - I'm already on a wargaming message board...) to want to use a font based on extant script. The marble base is nicely executed, as well.

Edit: You wouldn't happen to recall where you found the script, would you, Reaper6? Most of what I have handy is Anglo-Saxon. My Middle English texts are all printed in modern font and the German and French are modern translations. :(

oadie : Thanks, glad to see the marble effect is hitting the spot (I'm working up the Aquila in a similar way and will be posting it soon), as well as the script on the shield.
The font I based it on is called Gothic Texture Quadrata and can be viewed/ downloaded here http://www.fontriver.com/font/gothic_texture_quadrata/

EmperorsChampion : Mind ? Why would I mind . If anything I post gives others an idea they want to try then that's all to the good, and part of the point of being a member, IMO.

That's why I happily give links to anything that inspires me (unless subject to actual copyright) like the 13th century gothic script. On that vein, should anyone want a link to the marble tutorial just let me know.

It's too uniformly colored. On a huge statue like that it becomes painfully unreal looking when you have a flat color covering such a large area. Do some more shading, or some weathering, or some shadows, or something.
I cannot picture a statue looking like that ever.

To those of you who eschew the idea of a coloured statue, and you are quite entitled to your opinions of course, Gitsplitta's reply got the research imps going and they found this :

http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2008/07/greek-statues-in-color.html

That said, those of you saying that either filling or more shading/weathering is in order do have points which, should I get another of these suckers, will be duly incorporated.
