What is your Most Dissapointing Game or Gaming Moment?

Mine was, undoubtedly, a Kill Team against Imperial Guard. His List was 9 Guardsmen with 2 Grenade Launchers and 2 Sentinels with Autocannons and Hunter-Killers. Mine was 7 Sternguard with 2 Heavy Bolters and 3 Combi-Meltas. I opted for the Table Edge with the Bunker, which had excellent LOS across the rest of the board, and plopped both Heavy Bolters in there. He had Deployed his Sentinels on each Flank, so I split the Combi-Meltas, and ran them up the Sides with Boltgun Support. I kept them out of LOS, making their way closer to the advancing Sentinels, as the Heavy Bolters ripped up the small clusters of Guardsmen, who really weren't doing much. I took out 1 Sentinel with a Melta Shot, Destroying it, but the other Melta Shots missed, leaving the second Sentinel untouched. In a move of desperation, I targeted the Sentinel with the Heavy Bolters, and got an Explodes Result! It was absolutely fantastic, and I was confident that I would win. The situation then panned to me having the Heavy Bolters remaining in the Bunker, and the Marines on the Right Flank advancing and closing on the rapidly retreating Guardsmen, including the Leadership 9 Sergeant, who were running rapidly to behind a Solid Wall. I couldn't reach them with the Boltguns, and I couldn't see them with the Heavy Bolters, so next turn I mobilised and ran. God knows how, but the time soon came for me to take a Leadership Test. By this point, the Guard had already past four. I rolled Double-Sixes.

While the game itself was pretty awesome, it had for me - hands down - the worst gaming moment I've experienced since playing 40k. In a club tournament a few months ago I was playing vanilla marines vs. Thousand Sons. My PA Libby was safely ensconced in his razorback and in line of sight of a 1k-Sons squad hunkering down on an objective. I whipped out Null Zone at the start of shooting and roll a 4 - awesomesauce! Those 4+ invulnerables are so going down!

Next, I drop Vortex of Doom on his bunched up models for AP1 killiness and roll box-cars. First things being first, he takes the Perils wound for a lack of an invulnerable save. Next, the template drops on top of his transport. The opponent rolls a 3 for penetration, followed by a 6, and cries, "Tzeentch protects!" I'm thinking 'no biggie' - S4 hits, AP- on marines. He rolls 6 wounds and everyone saves - except the libby. His last wound expended, the Librarian takes his shame with him to the grave.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

@ Gavin Thorne- I would have loved to see that, its not as bad as my worst moment ever though...

Abbadon + 5 Terminators Deep strike. I aim to land somewhere where I would be competely out of LOS from my mates Ork army...I scatter 12" into difficult terrain. After the dangerous terrain test I have abbadon unwounded and 1 Terminator left. I thought that was bad enough (4/6 were 1's! Things dont get worse than that, right?). I then took 15 shots from loota's and the terminator died. (Abbadon is still okay, T5 and 2+ save atleast he'll make it to my next turn) Then the 11 remaining Shoota boys open fire. 6 hit (somehow?!). 5 wound! and I fail not only the 4 wounds needed to kill abbadon, but all 5.

I must have majorly pissed off the dice gods that day =( All i could do was shake y opponents hand and hang my head in shame.

When I had my orks. Rolling a 1 for there fleet on the waagh was always a kick in the teeth. Normally when you use your waagh with orks its always at a important moment in the game and to get a 1 for any of you rboyz is just pants...

Squad of 6 Fire Dragons, loaded up in a Serpent which I took round the back of a rhino. Disembarked them within melta range, and fired, hitting with everything. (I was thinking that the whole thing was going down at that point) The time came to roll for Melta shots. I scored one glancing hit and stunned the crew. Worst fail ever, even though I went on to win the game with a massacre (I am still doubtful as to whether my opponents list was the same size as mine, as I had tabled all his models by turn 3. He killed 4 of my men.)

The last game I played was 1500 points of Mech Space Wolves vs. Mech/biker eldar.

Nothing died until turn 3. Seriously. Melta shots, assault cannon shots, bright lance shots, eldar missile launcher shots, pluse laser shots. Living Lightning. Stuff either missed, failed to wound, or every type of save imaginable was made.

Nothing died for 3 turns. Then we ran out of time on turn 4 and had to call it a draw. It was the most frustrating yet comical game.

I was playing 2 on 2 40k with me (SM), my ally (Tau), against necrons and CSM.
The CSM had a Rhino full of marines just waiting to hop out and cause havoc, so the Tau ally sends a squadron of Pirahnas (can't spell it) to deal with the transport. They shot all their fusion things from below half distance a back armour, and did nothing. NOTHING!!! But thats not all, I was going to shoot at something else but to show that my SM were not as crap as the Tau I was honour bound to shoot at the Rhino too...

Boom! Leman Russ Commander

Definitely has to be my round of shooting as IG. every single shot I fired missed everything. And I mean everything, My whole army fired everything they had to clear some space for a nice charge to the objectives next turn, Basalisk shots went off the table edge, Leman Russ hit a piece of terrain, guardsmen missed every sm squad they fired at.

Pretty damn pathetic, and ended up loosing me the game

Losing 3 of 5 units to deep strike mishaps in my initial wave of Daemonic Assault. All were 10+ inch scatters (1 off the table and 2 into other units) resulting in destroyed units. Luckily it was a fun game at home with the wife so we just started over...

My entire army of DE not being able to down two stormravens. Literally all I had to do was destroy two stormravens and I'd win the game and it wasn't even the fact that they were in cover! I had several lanes of fire going at them 9+ raiders shooting dark lances at them and every time I went to pen or glance 1.

I've got you all beat, and this one happened last week.

I'm in an escalation league, where you can play special cards to enact temporary rules.

The last game I played was at 750 pts, which was composed of my troop unit and my HQ in an LRC. The only thing else i had on the board was two attack bikes.

Right, so the rule being played said that at the end of your turn you choose an opponent's unit, and it has to deepstrike next turn. That made my LRC essentially useless, as I could never ever fire it (it had the crappy POTMS) or assault from it.

First turn, my opponent tells me I have to deep strike the LRC. No big suprise. I put it at the best place at the table, as FAR as possible from any impassible terrain. There was ONE small piece exactly to my right, and I needed to roll about a 10 to hit it.

I rolled deepstrike.

Arrow points directly to the terrain.

Uh, ok.....how far towards it?

10 inches. Directly on top of it.

Gah!. Deepstrike mishap, please not a 1 or a 2.

2.

Boom. There goes my 90% of my army, turn 1. I had two bikes on the table left and my opponent had everything left. It was, of course, Annihilation.

So, my opponent won on turn one with 3 KPs vs. my 0.

Worst game ever.

OOPS, double post!

While I'm on it, I once had to take 5 terminator armor saves on my unit of 5 assault terminators. Guess how many 1's I rolled? :/

I have a chief librarian with force weapon bearing down on the three remaining members of a terminator squad, one dead termie wins me the tournament.

They're machine cursed so I'm autohitting. Four hits, wound on 2's.

My last game against Tyranid, 4th Edition rules, was something of a low. I was badly outnumbered, which was expected, but I had a BT Termie unit let by a Marshal, mounted in a Crusader. This unit has previously proven very effective against nids. He had very few synapse models, so I sent them in against his Hive Tyrant. All my shooting (between them the Crusader and the Termies had 3 assault cannon) missed or caused no Wounds. But that wasn't the worst bit. I had forgotten, of course, that the Termies would need to pass an Ld test to assault the Tyrant. They promptly failed it (despite being Ld10), and couldn't assault. They were ripped apart by a nearby unit of Gaunts - I failled virtually every save. To add insult to injury, the Tyrant wrecked the Crusader.

I played a game against my Tyranid buddy the other day, my Imperial Guard versus his bugs, in a 1500 point game. I took a pretty shooty list and he took his usual allotment. My dice were absolutely on fire and his were garbage though. I killed a carnifex and a squad of gaunts in the first turn, and it just kept continuing like that. Over the course of the entire game I lost about 20 guardsmen from a list of about 60+ plus armor support. I just generally hate any one-sided games, as they're not fun for anybody.

Assaulting a squad of Fire Warriors with 8 Khorne Berzerkers, missing with most dice, failing to wounds with the rest, not killing a single model...then getting 9 wounds back and proceeding to get wiped out by failing every single save.

On the plus side, it did win me the Murphy's Luck award at the tournament.

GT Atlanta 2004? I think,...

anyway...

playing Imperial Guard Versus Iron Warriors, had 20 charging roughriders with veteran Sargents into 3 squads of chaos marines with a character.

42 I5 S5 power weapon attacks!

2 hits

no wounds

All 20 models killed in resulting melee. Lost the event. Traveled 1600 miles for that one.

But wait gets better, was also playing 3 Leman Russ Demolishers, rolled 3 hits with barrages on 6 havocs, a chaos marine sqaud and a pair of obliterators.

12 instant death AP1 wounds 12 5+ cover saves!

Guy doesn't fail EVEN ONE, same turn!

Playing that one out was the hardest game I have ever played at a tournament in my life.

I threw the dice in the trash that day.

I was playing space marines against Guard.

He used a battlecannon on a tactical unit of mine. He killed 8 of my marines. Next turn, a land raider explodes. Next turn, blows up TH/SS terminator unit.

Very sad. That battle is the main reason I'm picking up IG!

Mine was in 'ard Boyz this year. Traveled 13+ hours to play... final round, draw a nid player. He keeps all of his army in reserve, with all of his troops arriving via outflank, and lets me take first turn, too.

So, I zip around with my deffkoptas, run with my boyz, and Snikrot comes in on my turn 2, allowing me to completely line one board edge and cover all but 2-3" of the other side.

When he can only get on one unit of genestealers, he concedes.

Without rolling a single attack, I pick up the massacre... and find myself with ~2 hours to spend wandering around without anything to do. Was pretty damn lame, as I even offered to "reset" and play a fun game with him, which he declined.

The last game I played was a friendly match with my brother. I had 1500 points of a terminator heavy list, which went againts his 1500 points worth of eldar.

Around turn four, the match was looking good. I had sucessfully killed nearly all of his aspect warriors(warp spiders got picked off in a sweeping advance, striking scorpions had sucombed to my assult squad with chaplain, their leader was deadlocked with my jump chaplain all game) and all I had to really do was kill his guardian fodder. I deep striked my last terminator squad just in range for them to open fire on the red devils and not get murdered in a blob charge. The terminators were equiped with storm bolters and assult cannons, so taking them out seemed pretty easy( 10 shots of mixed strenghs and AP). Well, first round of shooting went horrible, no assult cannon shots hit and only 2 storm bolter rounds cracked the guardians. Next, and last turn, there are 18 screaming red space elves charging my 5 terminators.......oh, shurriken catipults are assult 2? make that 2 terminators.

Needless to say, it ended badly. I probaly should have just locked them into combat and let them try to crack that armor. Lesson learned.

The difference between commitment and involvement is like eggs and ham; the ckicken was "involved", the pig was "comitted".
