I'M NOT ACCEPTING COMMISSIONS - I will still occasionally post things I've done for friends, but I'm not accepting commissions right now. Sorry!

Hey everybody, as you may have been able to guess from the title, this thread is where I'll be posting my commissions! If you actually want commission work from me, send me a PM and we'll work something out

As this time goes on, I'll update this thread with WIP pictures of what I'm working on, and update the OP to have pictures of completed commissions. I figure it's a pretty good way to let folks see an army come together, let my client know how his troops are doing, and keep me motivated!

Anyway, right now I'm working on a commission for Spikes. He's looking to have an urban Imperial Guard army painted up. He shipped his men over and after some cleanup, I started painting em! There's close to 50 men in various states of assembly, but here's what everything looked like right out of the box:

And now I've got basing sand, primer, and my first batch of grey done on the Catachans, and some sand and cleanup on the Cadians:

I promise you'll be seeing better pictures for completed paintjobs

The projected scheme for this army is a pretty standard urban camo, on the BDU's, and black body armor. Not sure what color to paint the Catachan headbands, since red would be a pretty poor choice for camouflage purposes. I'm feeling Shadow Grey though. And finally, here's some Guard I've painted for my own army - I'm looking to paint to the same (or slightly better) standard as these guys:

Stay tuned!

I've done some work on the skin and it's actually looking pretty good, despite the crappy photo. I also did the edge highlights on all the lasguns and laspistols, and a little on the rockets. Camo was also started - gonna hit those pants up with a wash then put in some white specks to match the black ones, and that camo should be done. The shirts that are just grey now will end up white, since that could look pretty cool. I'm also just starting the hair on these guys. Here's a picture of today's work so far:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well, I see this thread's just been jumping with activity - maybe I should give it a dose of adrenaline with THESE MANLY AS HELL CATACHANS AWWWW YEAH:

I wasn't much in the mood for doing much else today, so I just painted these Catachans in the urban camo scheme I'm thinking for the whole army. Think of these first 14 as a proof of concept for how the whole army will look.

Anyway, 14 down, 33 or so to go!

Nice job on the eyeballs. I have the tendency of doing cross eyes a lot and leaving it because its funny / stupid.

"Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, love is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and fewer would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds." ~ HK-47

A lot of my guys in my first few Guard squads and Space Wolves have crossed eyes, googly eyes, or just plain derpy eyes. It turns out the best way to paint eyes is to paint the area black then color in the white part, rather than try and get a good black dot for a pupil.

As a bonus, here's a WIP on some of the Cadians with Pig Iron heads. Personally, I'm a big fan of the one shooting a bolter gangsta style

So I've been a bit busy lately, but I managed to get some work in regardless. The first Cadian squad is coming along well, but I thought that maybe dark grey armor would look better than black armor. Here's a comparison shot with grey on the left and black on the right:

I post this not only because I think it may look a little more interesting, but because I don't like highlighting black. It never looks as good as other highlights to me. Tell me which you prefer!

I like the look of the black armour a little better to be honest, looks a little cleaner to me.

So I talked to my client and he said to do whichever color armor I wanted. I figured that grey could show off shading while black would always look flat. Here's another quick and dirty WIP with grey armor and most of the camo done:

Next up: White for camo stripes and eagles, and eye lenses! Any suggestions for color? I was thinking blue to keep it in a relatively cool color scheme, but orange might be cool.

If you want to keep it cool, Ice Blue on Ultramarines Blue for the lenses would look pretty sweet.

That was what I was thinking - a blue lens with an Ice Blue curve and a white dot should work.

Actually, what might look even cooler would be an Ice Blue lense with an Ultramarines Blue lowlight and a white dot. That might look more "lensy" in that it would give it depth. But your way would look damn cool too.

I was thinkin...if their Urban-based fighting, would having shorter barrles on some of them be a good idea? I know it just depends on the town and how everything is spaced out, but like in Airsoft in a CQC environ of any sort I'd rather a ten inch barrel size to a 18 inch.

Yes, but that's not up to SRM.

That's up to his client, who's commissioning these minis.

I'm guessing the client did the actual modeling, SRM is just painting them.

I'd figure shorter weapons would make sense for boarding actions or vehicle crews, not urban combat. SaintHazard has it right though - my client modeled these for the most part - I just cleaned some mold lines and did some head swaps.

Urban combat in 40k is not quite what it is in real life.

In real life, it's done room-to-room, avoiding streets and open areas unless it's necessary to use them.

In 40k, it's nothing but streets and open areas, with the occasional ruin or burnt-out building.

There are exceptions, but generally speaking, SRM is correct about longer barrels in urban environments in 40k being okay.

Anyway, we're definitely veering way off topic here.

I'm really liking the Urban Camo, I like the darker Black uniform better myself. the white muscle shirts are a little too loud for my tastes, in an urban enviornment they would have smudges, and ash on them. In a firefight, unless it was snowing, that would make for an easy target. I must say the painting is very good, keep up the good work.

Long time no post!
Finals are now over and I can devote time to painting again! Of course I'm back at my folks' place for break where the lighting isn't as good, but I think you'll get the gist of it!
Here is the whole commission so far - 32 infantry, one mortar, and a gun turret looking thing:

If you're keen-eyed you may be able to see I changed the camo spots on the Catachan Guard to stripes. The client likes stripes better, so I fixed that right up for him.
And here's a shot of the third squad of infantry with their heavy bolter turret:

I've got about 12 more Guardsmen to go and maybe another heavy weapons team and that should be it for this commission! I've got to say, I'll be sad to see these boys go since they've been coming out so well.

Hmm. No activity here in a little while. That makes me sad.

Well, although I do not have pictures, I got to give the guardsmen of this regiment a little bit of a test drive in a huge 2500 point game of my Guard vs. Orks and Salamanders earlier this week. I needed some bodies to fill about 200 points, and these boys were just itching to fight! While they were eventually overrun by the Ork hordes, they died fighting!

Here's a WIP on the last handful of guys - once these are done I think that'll be about 48 guys, and one finished commission! I'll have these guys finished by the end of the month.
Blurry picture incoming!

Also chiming in to let any potential clients out there know that I'm going to be accepting commissions after this is done - I'm really itching to paint some Hive Fleet Leviathan or Blood Ravens, hint hint, but I'm happy to paint just about anything!

So I finished the commission today! 44 guys in all, with all sorts of heavy weapons here and there and a little gun turret thingy!

Here's all of the commission except the gun turret:

Missile launcher teams:

Turret and more troopers:

Command squad:

It's great to be done with this army, but I'll be sad to see em go! It was interesting painting an urban camo scheme instead of my typical jungle camo. It turns out I really like the look of Pig Iron heads on Catachan bodies - it looks really sinister and a little silly - like a Contra badguy or something.

With this commission done, I've already got another one coming up! Spikes, the same client as this army, wants me to paint up some Imperial Fists for him! You'll be seeing the start of them sometime next week.
