I'm afraid I would have to agree the model isn't your best. It is quite blotchy (paint too thick?) and this model requires the paint to go on very lightly and with a lot of finesse to get the detail to stand out. I like your work a lot, you know that, but this one falls a touch short for me too. I would highly recommend starting to add silver into the mix and upping the layers on the raised areas, hope it helps!

I did up layers on raised areas - the lowest areas have tin bitz, then shining gold with a sepia wash, then up to shining gold, then burnished gold on the raised areas. I'll look into getting mithril for the finest edges though - it's one of the 'Eavy Metal tricks I really like.

I'm surprised people aren't really digging this guy since I thought he came out great - oh well!

battle Brother Lucifer wrote:SRM, can you post a picture with a light shining on the Sanguinor? I can't seem to make out many details on the face.
Also, I suggest painting his chalice silver, so it stands out more.

Last thing, why does Duke have pink fingernails on your avatar?

He's pretty well lit. I did nuff up on the face though - one of his eyes got painted over. I've since fixed it.

And that's not Duke's hand on his thigh in my avatar

what i meant was that the gold on the sanguinor looks too thick and not well blended. Just a personal quirk of mine but I like my gold armor to look like gold armor, rather than metal with gold paint slopped on

I just don't understand how people think it looks worse than my other gold armor that's painted in the exact same way.

It could just be the shots mate. Take some more well-lit shots of all of them.

They do have a point the sanguinor's armor seems like it's painted much thicker and it's a bit flatter than the rest. Once you have new shots of them all people can tell you why they feel there's a difference I guess.

maybe your sanguinor is unappealing to me because I prefer painting my gold as metallic as possible...
o well, looking forward to better pics

I think the gold is more than good enough. It's the GW model that I have never been fond of

That's a real shame about your power swords though. Hope the next batch doesn't try you patience as much!

These Sanguinary Guard have been a nightmare! While painting their armor was all fine and dandy, their swords have been the hugest pain in the ass. My first two attempts at blending led to cracked paint because of my old GW yellow. My third attempt used red to orange, and didn't have enough variation. My fourth attempt looks alright, but in some places they're a little weak. Anyway, just about everybody's done:

You can see a little gold smidge on the front left guy's wing - I've since touched that up

And some glowing eyes:

It's hard to tell from the blurry images, but they look good. I like the fire effect on the weapons! Although I think that you could've done a bit more blending from red to orange, perhaps with some white at the tips.

Otherwise, great job! Can't wait for Mephiston.

These are not the best thing since sliced bread... As far as just being basically painted they're good, but nothing really special. Kinda grainy. Try cleaning your brushes.

I like them. i doubt that will come as a surprise given what else I have posted in the thread.

What may be more surprising is that I am not a fan of the blended sword. It looks alot more like a wide stroke layering then blending. Trying to be constructive (and I say that loosely as you are a better painter than me, and one day I will get the photos up to prove it ) I would suggest trying to blend it instead as you have on other models in the past. As the older paint were not good for this would it be better to switch brands or perhaps order new ones? I know it sounds obvious but sometimes a new pot of your favourite colour or eve a new brush makes all the difference to me.

All that being said I think this was the 4th (?) time you had to repaint those weapons and that is a frustration I can relate to and understand!

im sorry to have to say this, but...
the white is not good at all. Its too thick and also very dirty, uneven and badly applied. Try thinning down your paint a lot more, and individually paint each 'feather' rather than drybrushing it, cause frankly, it just looks gak atm

Just a little WIP on Mephiston - I've built him up to a Red Gore. Figure I'm going to be highlighting up for the armor, and darkening down for the robe to distinguish it. Any ideas for the inside color of the robe?

I've also got some Stormtroopers I've been working on on the side:

So I managed to finish the Stormtroopers quickly - these guys are such a joy to paint!

And I've also made some more progress on Mephiston; trying to figure out a good color for the cape, since black is always so dull.

Painted up Mephiston, and I'd say he looks good for what he is! I put this guy through 3 baths of Simple Green, plus some time cleaning him off with a knife, and I still couldn't clean him up. I have absolutely no idea what the hell was under all that paint. As a result some parts (the winged shoulderpad in particular) have lost some detail and I had to improvise:

That's the last of the Blood Angels; he might need a bit of tidying up, but that's all she wrote on the boys in gold!

He is amazing, great job. The sword - very unique style and it's very effective and eyecatching.

But one quick change you might want to do is change the torso trim to gold, that boney colour is really out of place.

Thanks! The sword was my first try at that fine style of lightning - hopefully I can try the same technique out on some Space Hulk guys sometime!

Mephiston's bone colored area is that way because I was pretty closely following the GW paint scheme. I personally like it more than more gold; I'm golded out, man!

Im sorry, but Mephiston looks absolutely horrible
THe paint is waay to thick and also badly applied
The skull shoulderpad is atrocious
The face looks like a 5 year old painted it
I'm sorry to sound harsh, but the truth is often painful, and the truth here is that your Mephiston looks really bad

Well, damn.

@Brother, nice stuff man.Would you do me the honor of repairing one of my horribly disfigured models that I applied 17 coats of paint on? Oh, wait.. I see you did! My Mephiston! Whew, looking a lot better than the last time I saw you. -goes to get more paint to horribly maim Mephiston with-

I like your blending on the Sang Guard's weaponry.

Thanks for your input. I've got no problem listening to constructive criticism, but this is twice you've come in here, called my work garbage, and pretty much flamed my stuff.

There's a big difference between saying "The skull shoulderpad doesn't appeal to me, you should try X instead of Y" and saying it looks "atrocious" with no further input. One is constructive, and helps me as a painter. The other makes you look like an ass. I'll leave it up to you to figure that one out.

I wanted to weigh in on this discussion as the Blood Angel stuff is for me. Ill start saying that i received the models back today and i am very very pleased with brothers job. I was a little worried based on the pictures but the only reason is that because he takes very close and very well lit pictures. In my hand these guys look fantastic for what i paid. He is a talented painter but im sure he will agree is not a golden daemon painter. His prices are very well priced and his pictures do not do justice to how good the models look in your hand or on a tabletop.
The mephiston model i won in an auction and it was a real big mess when i gave it to him. Though i thought the facepaint looked bad in the pictures it looks good when i have it in my hand. If you look over these models with a magnifying glass they wont look great and certainly are not golden daemon pieces. However they are great quality for the price and i am very happy with them even though i myself was worried at one time. Thanks again brother, great job and your pictures dont do your models justice.
