So I've started my next commission, which is a squad of Sanguinary Guard, Mephiston, Dante, and the Sanguinor. Seeing how the Guard were already assembled and primed, I got to work on em! They're still WIP right now, but here's my progress so far:

The lighting at my folks' place sucks, but I'll take some pics with better lighting when I go back to my apartment in a couple days. For reference, the gold looks almost identical to the gold on these Chaos Terminators I painted:

Power weapons are fun. Can't wait to see 'em painted! One of my favorite things to see on a Space Marine model is a really nice, glowing/lightning etc covered Power weapon. While blue is the most common, I've also seen a sort of 'lava' orange/red that looked good, as well as some really nice looking greens. Regardless, I'm sure it'll look good.

Edit: Also, those Terminators look great!

I'm going for a lava effect - he wants some sort of black/red/orange blend which won't be easy, but will look totally boss.

Thanks for the props on my Termies!

Brother SRM wrote:Okay, so things have been going really slow on this front lately due to primer issues and real life stuff. I've been using Army Painter Daemonic Yellow, and while the color is decent, the fuzz it leaves behind isn't. The Marines were a bit fuzzy, but almost workable. I tried priming the Vindicator the other day though, and this is what I got:

Right now a whole bunch of Imperial Fists are taking a nice relaxing Simple Green bath, and I've got a can of Krylon yellow spray primer on my desk waiting to be unleashed. Expect some updates once I've got a decent basecoat. Fuzzy models really saps my motivation since no matter what I do it'll always look fuzzy and gross.

How did the Krylon yellow work for you? I wanted to do a yellow for my Trollbloods and after one yellow Mauler I am sick of painting yellow. Any chance you have a model that has just been primed you can post a picture of? Could you tell me what type of Krylon yellow you used?

Thanks,
Flaim

I used the Krylon Fusion stuff - it bonds to plastic, so it can be kind of tricky to work with. I'd also recommend priming a model with white primer first, especially for metals. This Vindicator is that yellow with shading in the recesses, but the bulk of the armor is what the yellow looks like right out of the can:

Exceptional work!

Also, this may have been covered earlier in the thread (in which case forgive me), but how have you been painting the gold?

My gold is fairly simple but looks nice, albeit brassy:
Tin Bitz > Shining Gold > Gryphonne Sepia wash in the recesses > Burnished Gold highlights and sometimes drybrush.

Expect finished pictures of the Sanguinary Guard in the next couple days - just have to paint up their power weapons which is going to be an exercise in crazy blending!

Looking good so far. Even just what you've done so far is great, I really like the banner - is that freehand writing on there?

I wish I was that good at freehand! It's sculpted on the banner.

Don't we all? An easy technique is to write on the scripture you want in pen, leaving enough space, and then painting over it. Much easier than just trying to paint it on normally. Even more easy than that is just writing on full stop.

That's the one thing you have to hand to GW, some of the minis are simply beautiful! Then again, some are not.. looking at you, Cortez..

Wow. I really like your work. My favorite is those Terminators even though they're not part or your commission are they? I like everything you've done so far, just so you know. =P

The Chaos Marine ones? No, those are for one of my own armies

I've been putting off the swords on the Sanguinary Guard since it's gonna be some crazy blending stuff I'm not exactly looking forward to! In the meantime, I got a start on the Sanguinor and make a bizarre apparatus for painting him:

They all look great, very impressed that you took on a yellow marines commission,

So the blades on the Sanguinary Guard are FUBAR - the yellow paint cracked, and on a second go it painted again. This turned my cool blends into cracked messes:

Somewhat discouraged, I went to work on the Sanguinor instead. Here's the golden boy himself:

Cracking paint on something that looks that good. I can only imagine how immensly frustrating that must be. Sanguinor looks so great, so take some solace in that.

Thanks The only thing that's worse about the cracking paint is that I repainted them and it happened again! Ugh! I need a new yellow.

To be honest, I'm sorry but I don't like that Sanguinor model. But fear not, I'm not so impolite as to not offer some constructive criticism.

The gold just seems.. not very bright and rather blotchy, infact the whole model just seems rather dull. Yeah, the gold looks tarnished to me I'm afraid, and it just seems to be lacking life.

In the BA issue of WD there was an 'eavy metal painting guide on this guy - maybe you'd like to check it out? Even if not to use it, then to learn from it.

Well I think the Sanguinor looks pretty nice, my only gripe that I can see is the face seems to be a bit flat, but otherwise, it's all good from me!

I'm sorry to say so, but your gold is just...meh
Try a base of 50/50 shining gold and bestial brown, wash lightly with brown wash, panel back up with pure shinning, highlight with shining with a bit of mithril mixed in, sepia wash, then final pure mithril highlight on the corners
atm your gold looks like gold paint rather than gold coloured metal. It's far too tacky and blotchy and lacks depth while being too thick a layer

Glory to the Twelfth! Glory to Angron!

‎"Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls. The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does. That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

You're the first person who hasn't liked my gold, here or on any of the other sites I post on. I did use a sepia wash, but only for shading in some areas.

Just to point out, I'm the first. Don't get me wrong, any other gold he's done has been great, especially on the Iron Warrior Terminators. But this model just doesn't work for me..

SRM, can you post a picture with a light shining on the Sanguinor? I can't seem to make out many details on the face.
Also, I suggest painting his chalice silver, so it stands out more.

Last thing, why does Duke have pink fingernails on your avatar?
