I really don't know what I could do to make him look like a Librarian from afar. Giving him a banner would put me back at square 1 and he'd look like a captain again. His sword will be painted with a wet blend so it'll look really stand out. Also the shift key is your friend.

Wouldn't the blue paintjob i.e. the librarian colours make him stand out from the rest of the army enough? especially since the rest of the army is yellow

Sorry, i tend to not use the shift key when I am typing fast.

The blue paint will make him stand out but I think he could still look like just a blue marine captain. Maybe a banner with candles and such to have a sense of command. Or a little familiar character, maybe one riding upon his shoulder? I just feel like he still has too much of a captain feel at the moment, thou he looks awesome, and it would be nice to have him feel more different than just a more cooler looking AoBR captain.

I think you're underestimating the power of a paint job sage. If you use the older colours (blue armour, yellow cloths) for the libby then most players will recognise him as a libby.

The other point I wanted to make is that the sword although nice, imo, is at an unnatural angle and to me gives the overall model a static feel. I would be tempted to rotate the sword arm at the wrist by about twenty five to thirty five degrees. Just so the weapon covers the body a little more and the arm doesn't have such a rigid line.

Unfortunately my client doesn't want the traditional Librarian paintjob on this guy, and wants something more akin to a standard Fists scheme. I'm going to be doing blue touches though, to mark him out. Also, he's the only power armor character I'm painting up, so he'll stand out enough. The blend on the power sword will do a lot too. Looking at it from here I'm not seeing the sword at a weird angle though - it looks fairly natural for this mini. I also had to keep it in a pose where I could slot in and out the torso as I saw fit, since I'm painting it in pieces for ease of painting. I just finished a bike, I'll have some pics up tomorrow!

So here's that biker I painted up - just a test for the other 4 or 5 bikers that are in this commission:

He looks great, SRM! Although I assume he isn't finished.

Oh, and by the way, what exactly does SRM stand for?

What makes you say that?

SRM is a cartoon character I made a while ago. I still make cartoons with him, which you can see on Newgrounds or Youtube.

The red's a little sparse and patchy in parts.

Looks good.. are you planning to put a wash (like you did with your yellow) on the red at all? Given the yellow and detail it looks a little flat which kind of brings the model down a bit.

Are you using ogryn/devlan for washing the yellow? Maybe use a light sepia then baal wash on the reds to tie them in?

I'm using Ogryn Flesh on the red as well as the yellow. It shows up far better on the chest eagles than it does on the trim - there's really not a whole lot of detail there to wash. The pictures are also a little blown out. I'm not saying the red is amazing or anything, but it does look a little better in person.

I only said that because, as mentioned previously by Monkeh, it is a little patchy in places, although I thought it was the yellow more than the red, and it didn't quite seem to be up to the standard of the other marines.

As for SRM, I'm aware of the cartoons . I just wondered if it stood for something or if it was a random collection of words .

So over this past week I've been able to finish both the Terminator squad and the Librarian.
Here's everything I've done so far except one Marine and a biker that I forgot to get into the frame:

Terminators:

Tactical squad (now with better lighting):

My client told me he specifically wanted the Librarian to be in his regular Marine colors, rather than Librarian colors. To offset this, I made sure his sword was distinctive and somewhat mystical looking with a nice green blend:

And his hair, which came out great if you ask me:

Next up: Vindicator!

Awesome! Although, while I do like that sword, I do think that perhaps a more contrasting red colour would have stood out more. I dunno. Maybe it's the image.

I didn't want to do a red as that's just the standard trim color for the army. I figured a green would stand out more. I wish I started from a darker green and blended into green instead of white though - it looks a little "toothpastey" if you ask me.

I'd have to agree with everything you've just said.

My client asked for closeups of the bare headed models, so I figured I'd post them here too! I've noticed a blemish or two in these pictures, and don't worry I've already fixed them. Anyway, here we go:

From my personal experience, a very basic formula for red, which is fast and gives the red a great pop, would be a base coat of Red Gore, then a wash of Badab Black, recoat with Red Gore on the flat surfaces, then a couple coats of Blood Red on the flat surfaces. This technique is fast and easy (not including time to wait for the wash to dry). Here's an example. This can easily be applied to shoulder pad trim.

Oh, how rude of me. Good work on the Imp Fists so far. Yellow is pain to paint. Going back to earlier in the thread, did you have a bad experience with Army Painter?

I had an awful time with Army Painter. It fuzzed up the models really bad, and even then it was a pain to get the paint off. It didn't come off completely either, so there's still some grittiness on the Marines. The Vindicator was mostly okay after a week in Simple Green.

That red is nice, and really does look good. I just don't want to mess with a black wash so close to all that yellow. There really isn't much surface to wash on the red shoulder pad trim, and the margin for error is fairly high. If I was painting some Blood Angels or Blood Ravens I may use your method!

I just stripped a ton of models for a commission. The models were primed, painted and primed again!! I used EZ Pour Super Clean. It's a degreaser that's eco-friendly and can be found in any Wal-Mart. It took the paint off of those models without problems. It's great.

Was it just the one batch of army painter that was problems or is this a recurring problem Brother SRM? Been thinking of stocking up on different primer colours and they seem to be the easiest to get my hands on over here, but horror stories are never nice.

The yellow worked out fantastic on these, they don't look gritty at all so you did a great job of damage control. Subtle shading with the washes and a rehighlight of the base colour really works on these guys, keeps em clean but adds depth. Look lovely!

It was just one can of the stuff, since Army Painter's too expensive to really have much of. 15 bucks for one can? Yeesh. I figured out what went wrong more or less, but I'm not going back to it.

And I'll have to check out EZ Pour Super Clean. If it's better than Simple Green and won't burn my fingerprints off, it might be worth a look.

Welp, before you go plunging your hands into the Super Clean, you may want to wear some rubber gloves. The thick house cleaning gloves, not the wimpy powdery ones. This product has been known to give a nice burn to the ill-prepared!

SRM, I'm not sure if you left them blank due to the wishes of the client, but I think the shields on all the terminator's shoulder pads would look better with some writing, or an imperial fist, etc.
