@ Galorn: I usually make the mold walls around 1" thick. But yes, I need to use something thicker for the supports.

I don't have a lot of Lego stuff, so I am looking at other options.

Akward but workable are "duplos" the mega sized lego like things. Alternatively you can make a really good mold box out of thick plastic cutting boards.

Howdy all!

I'm home for a while, and I had planned on just doing some work on the My LIttle Commissar and putting together some used Necrons, I have stumbled upon something else to occupy me....at least for a little bit....

It's Skalk Bloodaxe's terrain competition!

If you haven't heard of it yet, you can go over to his thread and check it out. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1350/403974.page

I will also post the official rules here, but just so that they are re-posted....please go to his page for any official rules and updates.

 Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:
Ok, here are the rules. Apologies for not responding to all the individual comments. If you have a specific question that you want answered PM me and I'll post your question here with an answer.

These are the rules. After this I am going to include them with every update I post in a Spoiler so they are easy to reference.

Please be sure to read the rules. Really. Read them. It took me 3 hours to write and edit them

OFFICIAL JUNK PILE MODELING CONTEST RULES

1- Contest is open to anyone that wishes to join. Official start is Friday November 15th 0000 your time and official end is Friday December 13th @ 1800 EST. Your project must be completed and submitted for judging within the expressed time frame, there will be no extensions.

2- You are building a pile of junk out of junk parts. Must be a new project and you must provide me with one WIP picture that does not have paint. It is acceptable if a repurposed part on your model has paint from a previous project.

3- Piece must be appropriate for the W40K or WFB universe.

4- Must be on a base no larger than a 40K 60mm round base and no smaller than a WFB 40mm square base (exceptions- 25X50mm WFB cavalry base, 25X70mm 40K bike base, WFB 20x80mm troop base). See photo for reference:

You do NOT have to use a GW base, I’m mentioning them only for scale reference. You may build your own base from plasticard, hardboard, pre-fab from any manufacturer, whatever works for you. Just stay within the noted size limitations.

5- No WIP shots on this thread, and do not create direct links to your photos on this thread. Please post on your own thread or PM me w/ pics or link to pic location.

6- Submit your entry by sending me 1 'master copy' photo of your completed project for posting here, I will post your photo on Dec 13th. See additional photo requirements for the judging process at bottom section of rules.

CATAGORIES

Due to the overwhelming participation, I've created the following competition categories. I will be choosing the category for each contestant based on past endeavors and available examples of their work. I'll post a list of entrants and the category assigned before the contest starts and update it as other people join.

Categories and qualifications are as follows:

Chaos Lord- Participants in this category have displayed incredible skill and have had their work recognized elsewhere, such as GW and / or other significant contests / publications / etc.

Exalted Champion- Participants in this category have not been officially recognized as above but display extraordinary skill. This is the minimum class for any Dakka contest winner.

Aspiring Champion
- Participants in this category have displayed exemplary skill in their work.

Chaos Cultists- Participants in this category display noted effort in their work.

Chaos Spawn- Participants in this category are Dakka lurkers that have come forward and joined this contest. This is the only category that is not qualified by skill, so expect some distinct variety from this gibbering horde.

The purpose of the different categories is to ensure the most fair and balanced level of competition possible. If anyone feels they should be moved from their assigned category for any reason please PM me.

Scoring

Scoring will consist of 3 categories worth a maximum of 100 points overall. The categories are:

Bitz (30)- What you choose and use to build your piece

Paint (30)- Colors used, diversity in colors / textures, weathering /damage, etc

Impression (40)- Overall impression for the model as an entirety. Does the model shows scale perspective with all materials used? Were the materials varied and diverse? Does the paint and weathering compliment and define the overall build? Does the model tell a story? Does the model fit the 40K or WFB universe? Etc.

Scoring Criteria

Add points for:

No prefab, meaning a complete build of random junk bitz. Examples are crushed sewing thimbles, mechanical pen springs, soda can tabs, cassette deck components, little broken bits of plastic, etc.

Immediate +5 point Bitz bonus for anyone that sends photographic 'as it happened' evidence of picking up a piece of random junk from a parking lot, sidewalk, dumpster, etc.

Comprehensive list of parts you used

Neutral points for:

Majority non-GW prefab bitz from old models (1/35, 1/24, etc) like military vehicles, cars, trucks, etc.

Deduct points for:

Majority GW bitz

No list of parts / bitz

Base that is outside size limitations (exceptions as noted in individual requests)

Posting WIP on this thread

Poor quality / insufficient number of photos.

Judging and Winning Entries

Each category will have a 1st and 2nd place winner. There will also be a 'popular choice' vote where your vote bestows the honored title of Primarch to the overall winner. In the case of a tie in any category I will decide on the criteria to break the tie. Primarch votes accepted from Dec 13th to Dec 26th. Contest winners will be announced on Friday Dec 27th.

First place winners of each category will be awarded a personalized piece of terrain built and painted by me. Second place winners will be awarded a bag of bitz from my bitz box. Winner of the Primarch title will receive both. If Primarch title is awarded to anyone that placed 1st or 2nd in any category will receive cumulative prizes.

IMPORTANT
Be sure to provide me with FOCUSED, CLEAR, and WELL-LIT pictures for judging. Minimum number of photos I am asking for is 5 but more is better and be prepared if I request more as I may need them for a tie-breaker or other decision.

If you do not have a device that can take a clean and clear photo, please consider getting assistance from a friend / family member, etc. It is not my intent to penalize anyone based on available technology or ability to use it but understand I will have to judge your piece by the pictures you provide.

That was longer than I thought...

Anyway, as I stated before, I bought some used Necrons. I should re-state that....I bought some VERY used Necrons!

I am not even going to show before pictures because I ashamed that I bought them! But they will be at least "ok" after I work on them. And I had already decided to go for a sort of "Undead" look to them, so the used ones will already look the part. I'm going to go for bone colored exoskeleton, and lots of grave dirt, and rust clinging to them. At least for the warriors, the Immortals and higher ranking 'Crons will be in better shape, maybe.

Anyway, I hope to have a small army assembled sometime this week. I'll take pictures of them before I start painting.

Thanks for stopping by, and don't forget to go to Skalk's page if you haven't already!

Ha ha ha Vik, my terrain will be novice category at best. Just doing it to hopefully re-inspire me to get my butt in gear!

Also, don't get too excited about the Necrons....not a whole lot of modifications, maybe to the Lords, but not much to the rank and file. Just looking to expand my list of armies to choose from.

Dave, I don't have any left, sent the last ones out a while ago...and the mold is getting worn, but I could maybe run it through a few more times and see they are still looking alright. I had planned to make a new mold a while ago, but then I didn't. Not sure why now....I'm lucky if I can remember my passwords most of the time!

How many are we talking about here?

And yes, I am happy to be home. If it weren't for the long list of Honey-Do's, I'd be alright!

I think its still a shame you didn't get to keep your bits in a jar. You could put it on your worktable as proof that you will tolerate nothing getting in the way of what you love.

Perhaps an odd question, but have you ever considered outsourcing your masters for casting? You have some excellent stuff and people seem to want it. Like me. I'm completely out of bottles and have 1 shotgun left. Plus I have yet to find any skulls as cool as the ones you sent me.

Also, thanks for the plug! Link in my sig goes to the contest thread and the updated rules. Glad to see you participating. I think it will be a lot of fun for everyone.

Yeah Skalk, I outsourced all of my casting in the begining. The problem with that is, if they are good, they are usually so busy with other people's casting that the turnaround time is very long.

It is a good thought though, and I might look into it again. Thanks!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Lots of Drama has been going on this year, I just recover from Cancer and my Grandpa passed away a couple of weeks ago.

He's in a better place now, he had been wanting to go for a long time. But it still hurts, now matter how much of a blessing it is.

I'm moving into a better and more permanent possition at work, but it's on a different 2 week on/off schedule, so I'm having to rearrange all that.

I think I'm done with the pony for now, I need to get around to making the mold, but I need to order more resin as the stuff I have seems to be bad.

All in all a dramatic and hectic 40th year. Not sure I would want it to happen all over again.

I missed Skalk's Junk Pile Competition. Sorry about that Skalk!

Heading back up North tomorrow. At least I got to spend Christmas with my family.

I will be back home on the first of the New Year. I'm going to make the most of it, just like every year, but this year, I have a better appreciation for how fragile life is.

Have a great holiday Season everyone!

Thanks Guys! I am looking forward to a more prosperous, and happier year in 2014!

I still haven't been able to get around to cast those bottles yet, I am still trying to find all of my stuff after our move earlier this year. But I will try to get the bottles and the Pony cast ASAP.

I know Emperor Bacon wants Shin Guards one the pony, and I haven't sculpted those yet, so not quite as done as I thought. Soon though.

Thanks for the well wishes, and I hope you all have a great New Year as well!

LDD, I am sorry for your loss as well, it does get to you, even when it is expected and a blessing to end their suffering, you still don't want to see them go.

Anyway, only a week up in the frigid cold and wind this time! (-29F today, and not much wind at the moment.)

Anyway, Thanks for stopping by,
