One of my friends wants to get loads of gretchin (like 100s of them) and pretty much make an army of them. Would this even be effective for ANYTHING? (Yes I know weird question but I like the thought of my space marines blasting and chainswording away hundreds of little green dudes, and was wondering if there is anything at all that should hinder me from doing that. And he is using vehichles.)

It would be hilarious.
And it would suck horribly.

always thought grots deserved their own codex though.... maybe with special assault grots...they would be ws 3 because of their elite training... or a grot wizard with a special teleport power that lets him deep strike anywhere within six inches of his initial position...

He's going to use some house rules (which I accept due to the hilarity of the army), such as jetgrots, which have ridiculously oversized jet engines on their backs to be used as jump infantry.

Great idea! Grots do suck, but my friend said he kill a demon price with 2 W left with some Grots. Like the idea of jet grots!

If I'm not mistaken, Panic make an all Grots army to compliment someone else's Squat army. Let me see if I can... aha! Here's what I was talking about. If you go to Panic or ArbitorIan's profile page and look at the thread's they started you should be able to find more about those armies. I remember reading several battle reports about each army. That should give a fair idea of how a Grot army would do.

Right - Grots would be fun!

Get the Forgeworld Runtbot as an HQ - its a robot operated by a Grot - he could be a Warboss in Heavy Armor, Cybork Body and Power Klaw. He could be a Big Mek with KKF also. Heck get two of them.

Then get some Grot tanks - also from Forgeworld - theyre BS 3 tanks with a 5+ INV save. Get bunches of these - they come in mobs of 3 to 6, you get 18

Then get some Killa Kans - theyre operated also by Grots. DCCW S10 and BS3 - 9 will do nicely.

Then get loads of Grots as troops - in units of 19 with a Runtherder. The Runtherder will be the only Ork models in the army - you could model these as 2 Grots on a bigger base wrestling with a squig hound.

That would be a fun army!!

1800 point list:

Big Mek; Cybork Body; Kustom Force Field

Warboss; 'Eavy Armour; Attack Squig; Cybork Body; Slugga; Power Klaw

1 Mekboy Junka; Grot Rigger; Deff Rolla; 'Ard Case; Twin Linked Rokkit Launcha x3; Kustom Force Field Generator; Turbo-Charga

a grot army would be fun just to see the look on your opponents face. I would expect some big gunz and depending on how the terrain is laid out if he moved them from cover to cover it could be hard to shoot at them due to lack of sight.

There are some great ideas in this thread. One of the best ideas is using models to simulate others, to actually make for a viable army list
Here are my favorite ideas (credit to people in this thread for them!)

* WoW Goblin Shredder for a Dreadnought or Warboss
* Kan Wall
* Grots holding HUGE guns, using them as lootas

You could have tons of fun modeling and converting that army!

maybe a grot trebuchet crewed by grots, that throws other grots at the enemy. I think grots have just the right ammount of intelligence for this.... smart enough to build it, dumb enough to think it would work...

I've thought about a grot army, and although it would, quite frankly, suck, i was thinking of buying some gnoblars, a little bit of some conversions, and you would have a genetically modified grot fighter squad (ws3 but no grot blasta) . Ive also thought you could have some squigs wired in to big suits, for meganobs, and grots with their feet nailed to drones as stormboyz.

Using grots as stand-ins for other units would work pretty well. You could also just take Mad Dok Grotsnik as the HQ choice for the army and give all of the grots cybork bodies. With 5+ invulnerable saves all around they still won't be killing much, but they'll be nigh impossible to force off of an objective. I'd say do this in squads of 19 grots + 1 runtherd and load them up into battlewagons and just tank shock the enemy off of objectives and then drop the grots on top of it.

I'm just talkin' about Megaweapon.

The Ogre Kingdoms Gnoblar box is your friend. Each set is something like 24 little dudes, plus they have two "sergeant" models that are one goblin riding on the shoulders of another, which makes them just the right size for a counts-as Runtherd if you don't want to include any Orks at all. Really all Fantasy goblins make perfectly good Gretchin with some conversions mixed in, just scour the bits box for as many spare lasguns, shuriken pistols, and other "weedy" guns you can to glue into their hands. Even archers are perfectly valid if you mod their arrows to look explosive.

Bear in mind that I'm a very casual player, and any advice I give will reflect that tendency.

Ummm... though the idea may seem clever gretchins are so crap even heaps of them won't take down enough of the enemy, use boyz instead.

something shall be here after 100 posts...

95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell JUMP BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is hands down the funniest thing I've seen all day! I can also actually see this working. I like the idea of a bunch of grots counting as a larger model. You could also probably have some fun with grot bikers, see how they work.

And don't forget the old gorkamorka 'Red Gobbo'. That could be an idea for a cheap character.

I think you can make gretchin armies work, if you can count them as other units. Little deffkoptas, looted wagons or trukks made out of wartrakks, gretchins in mega-armour, gretchin kommandos... You could make a normal working ork list that could hide behind almost anything.

I think it would actually work as long as your opponent is cool with you useing grot tanks.

Gretchins for the troops. Kanz for the heavy then the little tanks for the eilite!

To bad there isnt a gretchin HQ right?

Can't you see we have been abandoned? Forget matters of duty and honor to the emperor this is now a matter of pride.

I'm with MementoMori... most grot armies I've seen are "counts as"... either orks or imperials. A grot codex would be incredibly fun to see... but I think for now "counts as" is probably your most playable option.

I would buy some FW grotbombs and slap some buzzsaws and rokkits on them, put them on a flying base and use them for counts as deff koptas. The grot bombs are relatively inexpensive by FW standards.

Are the grot tanks of comparable size to ork buggies? If so they would make an awesome substitute for a grot themed army.

The FW ork big zappa could be put on an infantry sized base with a couple gretchin crawling all over it and be used as a counts as KFF mek.

DarkHound already mentioned Panic's grot army, CommissarKhaine also made a counts-as grot army complete with burnagrots in exo-suits and everything

You can find it here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/266318.page

But would a strictly grots-only army be effective for anything?
Highly doubt it 'cause there are no grots in the elites or fast attack sections, and you'd still have to counts-as your HQ anyway (well, maybe the warboss could just be so weedy fluff-wise that he only has control over grots )

- Let the good dice roll -
