Hi i am really new at wargaming and tabletop in general i just started playing 2 weeks ago (40k)

i am in WA, Perth. I am trying to find a new hobby besides gaming and book
i have read the 40k novels first(Ultramarine, Blood Angels, Grey Knights, and Ciaphas Cain) and played dawn of war ( all of them , well except soulstorm)
so I thought "Tabletop? Why not"

I am really interested in either Tyranids or Tau
I have collected few models of Nids so i guess i should start there , although i got the SM from the starter pack(assault on black reach), friend took the Orks

as for Tau , well i haven't bought anything, but the FW models sure look cool

well yeah at first time i get the starters i am thinking that my friend would take the spess mahreens

but then , he downloaded the Ork Codex, the claim the Ork as soon the payment is finished.....

yeah so for the moment i am stuck with Smurfs, or i could thin the paint and change their color....., but probably not

so yeah i probably go and play Nids team and later on Tau

really? i guess in the game where most of the time you ran toward the enemy, tau would seem abit "unfitting"

What chapters should i go for? Are the GK(pure GK) good for a small scale battle ? 1500? 2000?

GK are due a new codex, if rumors are to be believed, sometime early in 2011 - so watch out there, as I'm sure there will be significant changes to their list!

Well GKs being nerfed would be very hard to do as they are said to be the worst army in the game right now. What could happen and what i fear is they take the personality out of the codex. Why they are referred to as the worst is due to their age. The DH codex came out a while ago when mechanisation wasnt nearly as big as it is now. With the current dex they have no affordable transport and next to no AT so you can imagine they have problems dealing with all the current codices.
