Ive began constructng a Black Templar Space Marine army and am quite new to the game. My two friends who have previously played the game in there childhoods introduced me to the game after them having a trip down memory lane and getting into the hobby again. and then blah blah blah i got into space marines. After collecting and consructing a small army we began talking about playing. I was thinking of getting drop pods for my Space marines for various tactical reasons, ut my friend has now said basically that they are not worth the money. I was thinking of getting 2 pods and having a devisator squad in each. To take out my mates armour as he is collecting Imperial Guard and making his army basicaly a Tank based army. My other friend was the one who said that drop pods are not worth getting because they are essentially crap. So i now have mixed views on weather to get the drop pods.
So i was hoping someone who is experienced in the space marine area could help.

Welcome to Dakka Dakka, they might let it slide since this is your first post, but normally this would go in 40K Tactics or in 40K You Make Da Call. This spot is for introducing yourself to the rest of us.

To answer your question: I personally only have the space marines that came in the battle for macragge starter set, so I dont have any first hand info on drop pods. I am, however, a Tyranid player and love Mycetic spores or "spods", as they are now so lovingly called. I would say drop pods, like any model, are only as good as the person using them... then again, they are really only as good as the dice you are rolling

If you want to be in their face assault marine then drop pods are a good idea, if you want to hold back and form a defensive fire line, then they are a waste of time.

Welcome to Dakka. I don't use drop pods myself but i fought one DP army once. He had 1250 points with five drop pods. Only half will land on the first turn. He lands next to my tanks and marines with two meltaguns come out and blow up my tanks. Remember heavy weapons can't move and shoot. Post some questions in the tactics forum for more info.

Welcome to dak dak¡ Yep best place for that question is tactics but no biggie. I play chaos and other non drop pod armies so have no experience playing this army but have played against a drop pod army several times. If you know what you are doing this army can be quite devastating and has nearly wiped me in a couple turns.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Welcome!

I've used Drop Pods for a couple of games now.

I can tell you that against Tau and my friends IG it is very effective.

However, it is hard to wipe orks (Another friends army). Right now I fly in my dreads first to tie up as much as I can, then flamers and templates come in

I would suggest an odd number because half of them or rounded up come in round one, so 2 drop pods come down round one.
