I was just browsing around Dakka*2, familiarizing myself with the site and all that it encompasses. It's truly a great place! I was reading through some people's Project (B)logs and I became inspired!

My first addition to this (B)log should be the City of Death Bases I made for my Space Marines, but I posted those as a tutorial, and I don't want to double post, so if interested take a look at them HERE!
Preview:

So lately I have been getting pretty pumped about my orks. (I just bought some some off ebay today actually!) So I suppose I'll start with that...

This gun used to belong to another ork... but then this orc came along and wanted the gun. Now the previous owner's head shouts greetings to all of this ork's enemies!

I cut one of the teeth out of the skull to make room for the chain to be there and still not block up the nozzle of the Bik Shoota! I used Green Stuff (in my case I have blue stuff (i mix the blue and white parts together for it to solidify)) to make it look like straps were connecting the top area. Then I used cut up staples to look like nails holding it there.

I added some rope ("green stuff") to make it look like these things were actually fastened onto their back, not just floating there..

I used a small piece of a staple on each side of this one to make it look nailed on there

Here we have an unfortunate victim... i mean an ork prize displayed on his shoulder pad.

I used some zombie and skeleton bits along with some green stuff.

I wanted to give my army a worn/battle hardened look, so i sharpened all the choppaz and also adding chip marks with my trusty x-acto!

I want to make this ammo case that the Ammo runt is dragging to look heavy, so I built up some siding with greenstuff along the trail of the crate to make it look like it is displacing dirt. (Sorry for the bad quality)

So yeah, that's my first post. Thanks for taking a look! Stay tuned for more, and please do offer any suggestions!! Waaaaagh!!!

I also just tried out Psyker_9er's technique for making your Tyranid tails more realistic and alive and was quite happy with the results. It's called FUN WITH PLACTIC AND FIRE!! Check it out!! It will both increase your manliness and perk your imagination for thinking outside the box when it comes to modeling!

Just so you know, there's a section just for project blogs rather than putting them into the main P&M area: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/forums/show/56.page

That said, I really like the Ammo Runt idea, might have to do that myself

Hey.

Those are some nice bases you've made. And your conversions are good too. Simple but effective.

Alright, I sent a message to a mod to have it moved over to that section. Thanks for keeping me in the know!

Also yeah, the ammo runt idea is quite simple to do, and seems almost necessary to me. (unless he were on an ice/metal planet of course)

A while back I was trying to figure out a paint scheme for my Tyranids, and am pretty sure I decided on having a white exoskeleton with a black with gray highlighted carapace and blue highlights.. so I painted some guys up. Was pretty happy with them. I was in Chicago at the time, and was gonna move some of my guys out to Seattle. A gamesworkshop guy convinced me to get some clear coat varnish to spray on and protect my guys... but when I used it, it completely clouded the details and grayed it out a lot.. Does anyone know of a way I could fix this? If not I'll likely end up either just repainting over it and fixing it, or stripping the models and starting over as it was really discouraging to see my hard work ruined. Someone suggested to me that I do another spray of the varnish on them - which might wet the 1st layer - and if I make sure it's not a humid area i do it in, this could clear it up. Does that seem like it would work? I don't have a lot of experience with clear coats personally, so any advice would be welcome! Also, if you have any suggestions for how to sharpen the color scheme a bit more, that would be awesome too.

Tyranid Warrior:

Hormogaunts:

Here's the Biovore, I didn't clear coat him, but he was one of my first painted Tyranids, so he's still a bit rough.

Also, here's some more of my minor ork mods..
Nob Optical Zoom Mod (I used a scope, cut in half, and put it on his head to make it look like he has an enhanced zoom eye thingy!)

I also cut the horns off the nob's head, and put then onto this rugged looking boy. (This is also another angle of the zoom lens!)

....I also just noticed that I missed the ork boy's choppa when I went through my hoard and sharpened and gave battle damage to them... oops! (rectifying now!)

I cut the chain below the Warboss's gun and glued in this head, simple/easy and quite effective. This could be done with anything you want to hang there.

Great looking stuff. Simple little conversions that add that special level of detail that will make your army different.

As for the Spray Varnish gone wrong....I've heard rubbing alcohol can clean it up without having to start all over. I'll see if I can find a link for you.

Ah yes, try this out for size: Read down a bit and you'll see what i mean.

Thanks guys, I will pick up some Rubbing Alcohol in the next few days and let you know how it works out. If not I'll try the respraying technique. Can't hurt to try!

Well.... I coated them with some 70% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol today and initially when they were wet they were super clear and looked like they originally before the Fing GW matte finish.. but then once they air dried, they were even more gray/frosted than before!!! Ahhhh!

So then I tried soaking them for a little while, and then rinsing them off in hot water, but that made them even worse. They still look good when I get them wet with the rubbing alcohol, but once dry it's worse.

Help?!

So for a visual of what I'm talking about...
Here's a hormogaunt after i took it back out of the rubbing alcohol and it's air dried...

Here's the same image half dipped into some rubbing alcohol and still wet...

And here's the guys soaking in some rubbing alcohol...

Notice the black and gray armor in the cup... I miss seeing that!! Maybe I should just play with my guys as they are and just periodically dip them in rubbing alcohol throughout the game... so that they look good for small 10 minute intervals till they dry again?

Well, I've been traveling a lot and haven't had the time to post anything, or do that much, but lately I've been working on my ork trukk..

I really liked the feel of an Omaha Beach type transport... I melted the exhaust pipe to bend it to shape, I added spikes and body parts to the front, and also used some plastic to build up walls with. Here's what I got (I'm still waiting for my gunner in the mail and have some other things to do, but I thought it was due time that I posted something!):

I like the beach lander-y transport. However, something about the transition from the cab to the transport area just strikes me a bit.... wrong. Can't quite say, but maybe it's the height difference... I dunno, might just be me. But, still cool work and all that. Excelsior --Lord Kaesar II

Yeah, it's still not quite how I want it to be.. I'm thinking of building up the walls a bit more near the middle possibly.

As far as the tall cab goes though, it has to be higher so that they can see where they are driving. Example of the real thing:

Anyway, thanks for the support!

I like the trukk converison you got there. Did you for the most part just use bitz from the actual trukk box?

I think i may have to steal your idea haha.

Well, it's clearly taken me a while to getting around to updating this again. I've been traveling a lot and all that.

So recently I've finished building up my trukk (for the most part) and before that had also put together some 3 Warbikes, 5 Black Orcs with Shootas (Yeaaahhh!!!), and 4 Chaos Marines.

So here's the nice welcoming front of the Trukk:

Then a top view..
You can see I reinforced the walls a bit (by cutting the-weird-plow-like-piece in half)

Here's an undershot to see what I lined everything up with in regards to the chassis. (I hope this helps italiaplaya)

A sideview that showed the walls better and also shows the wrecking ball (You can see that I heated up the chain with a lighter and bent it. to make it look like it's swinging backwards as they drive.

Then here's a nice closeup of the cockpit. (Note the skull on a rope I attached to the bottom of the Big Shoota and that I didn't use the ugly/still/boring driver's head that came with the set...)

And a nice ending with a shot of the exhaust pipe that I wrapped around as opposed to under.

For the most part I only used the pieces from the sprue for the Trukk, but items I added include: Plastic paper clips that I cut up (the Yellow strips on the walls), Pieces of an old printer that I cut up (the very light gray walls) and two new heads (as mentioned above).

And here are my Black Orckz??? Is that a good name for them? They are the Orcs from fantasy with the modern upgrade of firepower! (Pretty much Feral Orks) I think I'll paint them up in the Goffs fashion.

I personally really like the look. I plan on also making some orck boyz with spears and chainmail and shootaz.. I just have to get around to it.

And some badly taken pictures of my Warbikes..

It's hard to see, but in this second picture you can see where I carved in tread marks on the bases previous to gluing the bikes on. I made the tread marks have a similar pattern to the bottoms of the tires as if they were actually imprinting the landscape/mud.

As always let me know if you have any questions/pointers/ideas.

Well, I sure have been busy lately with the holidays/family/gf...

A little while back I made some possible color changes to the armor on my SMs as well as adding a preliminary dark brown base color to the ground to see how it looks (as suggested by people on another thread). Check it out and let me know what you think!

I added Scorched Brown to the base (it looks really sloppy right now, and it definitely needs some more work on the base, but I do like the contrast a bit more. compared to just gray bases with silver guys on them.)... I also added some of the brown to their legs and feet to make them look a little more battle worn (also still a WIP!) and it's interesting to see that scorched brown when applied to dried boltgun metal makes it look very similar to tin bitz... so I'll need to fix that too.

So, two possible routes to proceed from so far...

The two on the right are more my original idea of being true to mostly just silver. I wanted SMs that blended into a cityscape, not ones with bright colors... but apparently that doesn't actually look that good for wargaming minitures. That's why I'm looking around for other possible variations. Suggestions would be very appreciated!

The left 2 guys have Tin Bitz and Shining Gold (I believe) added in various areas (I hope I'm not stressing the point too much, but they are very much WIP so it's a rough paint job)

And then two pictures of the guys on their own..

Thoughts??

Check out my Project (B)log! I would love any suggestion or comments you may have.
