Death-Dealing Devastator
|
Having just read IA8, I've found myself quite taken with some of the vehicles in it (Hence having bought a Mega Dread recently). So I've decided to set about attempting a Big Mek Junka.
This has been quite a lot of fun! I've had the day off, a stack of new albums to listen to, and a Trukk sprue, a Rhino Sprue, and a box of non specific bitz.
The first thing that I knew I had to do was give it a massive engine, and make sure that there could be no mistake that it had a big, powerful engine. This led me down the train of thought that there was nothing else to do than try and make the Rhino into a Rhino Hot rod. So if you excuse the phone cam pics, here is the fruit of today's labours:
I'm hoping the pictures give you at least the general idea. Basically I've cut the side door out, wedged the engine block into the front and added a few warbiker bits, and made sure it has an appropriately large exhaust. I've made a start on drilling some bullet holes into one side, I'll be continuing with more battle damage, and seeing where else I need to add bits to the armour. I'll post more pics when I have.
But I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Very similar to an idea I have for a Looted Wagon - though I was planning to integrate the engine into the front of the vehicle (complete with driver), rather than on the front of the vehicle. I'll be watching!

Only a few more bits today. Actually, today has been one of those days where you spend most of your time looking at the model and saying 'Hmmmm'.
I'm afraid the Caddy fins had to go, which was a shame. But I've now given it a a kind of upper deck type affair. In the interests of health and safety I put a couple of handrails on too.
Interior.
You can see where I've had to move the Caddy fins. A few bullet marks have beed added. The holes in the engine will have Warbike exhausts coming out of them, but I won't attach them until much, much later.
The front as it stands. I've swapped a Glyph I stuck on for a Leman Russ view port and added some scrapes and bullet marks. I'm toying with the idea of having the driver sitting on top somewhere, not 100% about that yet though.
That all so important handrail. Remember, safety first!
And a slightly better view of the engine.
So I don't think I'm too far off finishing the body. Next will be weapons and the driver, should I choose to have him.
Thanks for your comments.

I say skip the driver, since you allready got a view port it would be odd to have sugestively two drivers, since that's what I guess the view port is for? i.e. the driver is inside and using his view port

although the parts look cool together the engine doen´t make sense sitting on the spikes of the rhino. what engine would work that way? not eaven orks would build that way. i understand what look you tried to achieve but for this there should be some hydraulics or something that transports the motion from the engine towards the tracks...
the top of the rhino with the extra armor and the new open look is nice and also the big exhausts add to a cool looking orc touch.
only downside is the unusable engine. if you can mmodel it to look workable you´ve done some orky looking beauty.
cheers mate

Next bits are done. I believe I've finished the body. I say I believe because there always seems to be another cool thing in my bits box. I've even gone as far as knocking together a Skorcha turret to see what that would look like. The turret still needs some work, but I'm pleased with what I've got so far.
I've finished the engine and added a big exhaust. I will add another one, but not until I've painted that part of the engine, it looks like it could be fiddly.
In response to your comment Viktor, the engine has been put inas logically as I can think of. The engine block has been mounted on a chassis, and hopefully you can see in the pictures that there are a few pieces of the engine feeding back into the body of the Rhino. One of the these is the gearbox, which I made sure sits recessed into the engine bay. It's that part of the engine that transmits the rotary force of the engine to the wheels. It would be from there that axles go into the drive wheels of the tracks and so on and so forth. I hope that clears it up
I also added a few glyph plates I had kicking around, and added some scrapes and damage. I also added a fuel drum and and a few little finishing touches.
I used the other roll bar of the Trukk, put on an extra foot plate and and other cosmetics.
And added a tiny bit of detail to the interior. Just about ready for priming.
Thanks for your comments. But I think I'm going to need help... The weapon turret gives you a good idea of how I'm going to arm that part of the tank, I'm hoping to make a few interchangable turrets (Big shootas and Skorchas etc.) but it's supposed to have 3 hull mounted weapons. So far I can fit 2 on! I would really appreciate any kind of suggestion as to how you think I should do the three of them. Thanks

I was planning to utilise the side sponsons for hull mounted weapons - perhaps using the Battle Wagon Big Shoota Boyz. You have the holes there. If Boyz are too big, maybe Big Shoota wielding Grotz?

Looking good so far, I'd suggest boyz hanging out the side hatch with weapon attached to the hull, either on an arm (like the valkyrie) or suspended on chains from the top of the hatch.

Sorry for the delay in updating. Thanks for the comments, the engine definitely looks loads better with the radiator on it.
And thanks for the tip about the Grot Sponsons. I can't believe I forgot about those! I shall get onto ordering some.
Well, it's now primed. I won't bother posting a picture of it in primer as it'll just look like an indistinct black blur. I have however started painting the engine. I figure it's going to be the engine and the interior that are going to be the hardest, So I'm going to get them done, or mainly done before I paint the hull.
I've covered just about everything in Boltgun for the base of the engine, then picked out a few bits in Dwarf bronze. I undercoated the red in Mechrite red and then did a coat of Blood red. Waited for it to dry and put a load of Black wash on it. Next will be highlighting everything, fixing a few mistakes and then having another wash over the top of that.
I've purposely left some pieces black at the moment, they'll be painted before the next wash.
Now just the annoying wait for the wash to dry!

Right.
I was quite productive last night. I've done the interior. I think.
Yesterday afternoon I had done the basecoats and the initial wash of black.
Once the wash had dried, I drybrushed the walls again in their basecoats (Ultramarines blue, Boltgun metal and Bleached bone) I painted an orky symbol onto the floor in blood red, then drybrushed with Boltgun to make it look worn and scuffed. I then coated everything in Gryphone sepia to make it look quite dirty. Once that had dried, a couple of highlights and a few orky slogans to finish.
I also finished those infernal dials, Next time I may paint something like that before I put it in Please excuse the very blurry picture.
So now I'm onto the hull. My idea for the vehicle is that it is an old Ultramarines Rhino, they come in blue, and that's Gork's (Or possibly Mork's) favourite colour. So it wouldn't need to be painted. But Red ones do go faster. How would an ork try and mix red and blue?
Hot rod flames of course!
I'm hoping to have a very recognisable, old and beaten up UM Rhino with the flames just slapped on the top of the paint.
I'll let you know how that's going to work out... I've not really used blues before!

Well, I got the first stage of the hull finished last night. I drybrushed the Ultramarines blue with Ice blue, then a tiny drybrush of Space Wolves grey. Then painted over the Mechrite red with
Blood red.
I had to remove the exhaust for the purpose of painting, it will be back.
Then I left them with a coat of Badab black overnight.
This morning I went over the Space wolves grey again with a very light drybrush. Now for the flames, then the hundreds of details, spikes and sticky out bits!
I'm afraid the plan for an Ultramirines Rhino went out the window, as I'm a novice at doing blues! But I'm not disappointed with what I've got so far.
Samus_aran115 wrote:Really awesome! I've been thinking of doing something like this for a while. I was thinking about putting that engine block up in the big hatch, and then working from there, but your idea is much better
I had that idea too, but the Hot rod idea got the better of me. Now if I were to do a Looted Chimera, that's exactly where I'd put the engine... No, can't think about that until I get this finished!
