So I was in my thinking place (the shower) and wondered to myself:

If, today, an Emperor figure emerged and started assimilating and conquering the world (depending on whether or not he was resisted) and demonstrated seemingly divine abilities: Would you submit to him?

Personally, I don't know; he would ask you to surrender your democratic rights, want to wage wars of conquest, etc. But he'd also appear like a God to us? If you saw his acts on the television would you assume it was a hoax? What would the Emperor have to do to persuade us? Or would we die at his hands?

I don't see the Emperor's divine abilities as what makes humanity submit to him in the GrimDark 40k. It is the protection he and his sycophants offer from the Xenos and Chaos threat.

He'd probably have to go through round after round of medical testing to prove to the world that he is truly a psychic. I'd imagine some portions of the world that are awaiting the arrival of a Jesus/Messiah/whoever the Muslims have cause I'm too lazy to go look it up right now. They may declare him the Second Coming.

I'd imagine most of the rest of the world will resist though....one thing will always be true in international relations, and that's people in power would rather fight than relinquish their state. Of course, one would think the Emperor would be smart enough that he'd start off with taking control of a very powerful nation.

If the Emperor showed up it would be pretty silly not to follow him, wouldn't it?

I think he would be scene as the anti-christ more likely by the religuios people, that would fit more along the lines of the bible, with the anti-christ taking over the world and then Christ coming and defeating him

I'd be freaked the hell out, personally. Apparently, the Emperor can create supernovas and beat up C'tan, and any person that fits that description would be scary as all get.

Well let's think about this:

A) Utter destruction at the hands of genetically engineered super warriors

B) Continue to live

We wouldn't think it was a hoax because seeing the emperor is not like seeing any normal man, you wouldn't be able to look on his greatness, people would break down in tears and weep, some people would simply have a nervous break down. (In this day and age he'de probably be sued a thousand times over for emotional problems he's caused)

But I think it would be abuntantly clear that he is the Emperor.

As opposed to what… chaos?

I mean if ever there was an emperor like figure I don’t think it would take long for him to unite all of earth under him. Some would resist but he would just destroy them utterly.

I think he'd be smart enough to simply subvert either a very powerful nation (get elected president of the USA?) or become had of state in The Next Big Thing (India or China?) Maybe he's already here and that's what all of this silliness from China is about.

Now, from my old college psych class, analyze -why- we'd want this Emperor figure.

No, I would not follow the "emperor." I would take up arms and fight for the freedom of humanity, not for somebody claiming to be the reincarnation of Jesus and Chuck Norris combined. And if his genetically engineered invincible supermen kill me, then I shall have died a good death defending the country and people that I care about so much, instead of bowing to his will and letting the system of democracy, the foundation of this government and everything it stands for, get trampled into the dust. I would sooner die than see this country surrender to some dictator.

No, he wouldn't. Rounds of medical testing are only necessary for "psychics" that are either frauds or so weak that they're hardly worth looking at. The Emperor is not that kind of psychic. Even a single lowly sanctioned psycher could easily prove himself just by frying entire cages of rats from a hundred feet away.

Holker: But how many people would believe it was real and not some clever trick? But I'm willing to bet the whole word will fall into war anyway. Half the world will take up arms for the Emperor, and the other half will try to defend their nations and sovereignty. They'll fail of course, but I have to admit.....the image of hundreds of Space Marines and Guardsmen storming something important like the National Mall, Parliament or Red Square while screaming 'For the Emperor!' will be amusing.

A tad OT, but not so OT to deserve it's own thread....what if instead of the Emperor announcing himself, the ships of the Imperial Navy arrive in orbit of our Earth and declare us part of the Imperium? What then?

If that happened, the entirety of the planet would likely take up arms against what we see as oppressive invaders. Those ships in orbit are gonna get a crap ton of nukes to the face, followed by a planetary invasion for us. We would lose, that's a given, but the people of Earth would not go quietly.
