Hello Dakka,
I'm new to 40k - I've actually never yet played it. I'm curious and going to give it a go because my husband, who you folks know as MeanGreenStompa, thinks I'll enjoy it quite a bit. Tyranids really grab my eye...they're such cute little buggers and they remind me of the Xenomorph which is near and dear to my heart. So to speak.
So please forgive me because when I sound like a clueless freshman about comes to Warhammer, I really am.

Welcome to Dakka, good to see another lady on the forums. 
I really need to convince my wife to join somehow, but she tried Heresy first, bit of an error it seems as she went off warhammmer forums. 
On a side note she also likes Tyranids, (as does two other of our female friends, really what is it about those pesky xenomorphs and those of a female persausion?)
Although with her fave Carnifex's getting blatted pretty hard and a dislike of Tyrgons, she has just switched to Dark Eldar.
But yeah, welcome.

I wouldn't worry at all about not knowing much about 40k, the only thing that seems to upset anyone around here are people who believe something wrong about the game/background/etc. and then condemn anyone else for believing otherwise, and since I doubt you'll be going around doing that, you'll be good .
Tyranids are fun little buggers, they're like your own personal endless army of critters. You don't have fancy characters who inevitably get beat up in games, you just have your regular bugs and then bigger versions of those. Overall they're a fun army, and I definitely recommend them. Just feel free to post whatever thoughts you have, and you should be able to get a decent response. Plus you've got Mr. Stompa, so you're two steps ahead of the rest of the newbies

I thought you were going to go for "Bride of Stompa" but this one is quite nice, too!
My wife doesn't currently play but she glances at Dakka (over my shoulder) from time to time. Nice to have another significant other involved in the game .
Tyranids are my favorite 40k race, too, although I only play fantasy. Awesome look to those models!
