Sweet jesus that eye is scary

this whole army is looking great, it really captures that essence of gothic sci - fi horror that 40k daemons should have, but the GW miniatures fail to portray

love the conversion work only think imnot a fan of is the soulgrinder/defiler body. Just to much going on with the model.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

With the Soul Grinder and Flamers largely formed, the Harrowed’s daemonic overlords are bending their blasphemous energies to new projects. I’m working on ideas for bloodcrushers.

Actually, I’ve wanted to field bloodcrushers for awhile now, but I’ve been stumped for conversion ideas. I need something daemonic, of course, and (in keeping with the army’s theme) something depicting the possession of IG soldiers and/or vehicles. Since GW’s crushers are represented by bloodletters riding ox-looking mounts, I tried various cavalry ideas, but nothing really seemed to strike the right note. I wanted something mean and hulky, not speedy; something strong, not sleek. Something implacable and khornish.

Then, fiddling around with bitz, I found a form I liked when I affixed a spawn torso to a sawed-off pair of sentinel legs.

I liked the way that combination filled up its 60 millimeter base. And the pose felt right: I liked the way the creature seemed to be lumbering rather than loping, and the way the flesh of its torso looked as though it was popping, bubbling unnaturally, as if diabolical daemonic steroids were ripping through its system.

So I decided to work from that frame.

I chose a head from the old csm/WHFB chaos warrior mutation sprue, partly because it was big and human, and partly because its mutation was ripping it apart:

I drilled a bunch of holes in the head, to work in cables and wires later.

Then I found a collar for the creature (whittling down a spotlight from a vehicle accessory sprue), and started sticking a few other mech-looking plugs into the creature’s back:

The inspiration for those plugs comes from the most-excellent Forgeworld Renegade Ogryn models, which bristle with similar looking stuff. (Mine I carved off from various vehicle accessory sprue bitz – e.g., smoke launchers.)

I’d shaved off part of the sentinel chassis in the “groin” area, leaving a torn plastic scar. To cover that, and to make the creature look more like a servant of Khorne, I added tusks:

So here’s what I have at this point:

Still to come: I want a lot of wires, cabling and so on to make him look like some hideously engineered bit of biomechanical menace – something like a combat servitor on Khornate crack. That neck collar, for example, will be sprouting wires.

I’ll work in proper “feet” of some description. And I need to work out joins grafting the torso to the sentinel carriage.

And then of course I need to come up with something for the arms. I don’t know exactly what I’ll do about those yet.

But I do kind of like the way it looks so far.

Thanks for looking.

Do you plan on adding a bloodletter rider, or will this be the bloodcrusher by himself? One could imagine another servitor hardwired into the beast to "count as" the bloodletter?!?
And fo its feet, have you decided on something? Or you want to keep them as is?

Still, so far so good, I love the head w/ collar, very Khorn-esque, plus the junction between the sentinel legs & spawn torso.

Cheers!

ok ilike the idea, but the groin spikes seems a bit....meh

im also not sold by the legs, im sure when its done it will have decant feet but atm i cant really picture it...

however, i really like the head and the body. the implants on his back look ace, and the head and collar looks really great. maybe chaos spawn big muscular arms for its limbs?

Very interesting. Though I'm worried that will look too much like your Demon Prince. You have Sentinel Parts all over that army.

I have no idea what you could use for arms but I suggest you give at least on of them the giant crab claws from the Carnifex kit.

I think they need some kind of gorilla-like front arms o differentiate the from the DPs. It looks great, though.

I love the plugs/canisters embedded in his back and, if you don't mind, I'll steal that idea for 3 of my own wip models
Not too sure about the groin spikes, perhaps a big armour plate or a chainmail loincloth could work better?
Very curious on what you'll do with the arms (and secretly hoping that they're going to be massive gorilla-like arms)

Overall it looks like it will be awesome model, great job

I hadn't planned on adding a rider to the bloodcrusher, but after gathering feedback, I decided to try it out in mock up form.

The figure was already busy, which made me wary about trying to graft something bio-daemonically into the creature. And a concern one of my friends here has about making the model intuitively recognizable to players unfamiliar with my army has some weight, I think. So I decided to try working with a bloodletter model.

Which did fit pretty well:

He does make the model a bit taller than I intended.

But then, it does look a lot like what one would expect from a bloodcrusher:

I'm torn. The model is starting to look a bit cluttered to me. And I hadn't really expected to go in this direction. I'm not sure it fits into the Harrowed narrative concept.

But it does look kind of cool. And I suppose this approach would have the added benefit of distinguishing these beasts from the sentinel based daemon princes and greater daemons (addressing Anung Um Rama's concern).

I can't decide. What do you folks think? Rider, or no rider?

I absolutely love this new conversion. It will be easier to use against players who don't know you, haven't seen it. You can lower the profile with other ones and this one can be your "leader" or even a herald if you want to.

I'd take the wire off of the hand of the beast, not the one on the rider-that would declutter it quite a lot IMO. I like the model otherwise, tough.

I think it could actually work quite well without arms. Especially if you put some talons on the feet.

That would also help make it look different to your demon princes.

I think if you put a rider on it shouldn't just be a standard Bloodletter, simply because nothing else in the army uses the standard model and I feel it would ruin the aesthetic.

How about a Guardsman thats been absorbed into the flesh of the Juggernaut up to his knees? It's clearly a rider, but fits the theme much better than just a normal Bloodletter.

When it come to playing against people you don't usually play, just have a reference chart handy, and point out what everything is at the beginning of the game. I'll also point out that anyone who mistakes a *unit* that is quite clearly being referred to and moved as such as anything else needs their eyes checked.

Of course, you could just give it a heavily red-oriented paint scheme. In terms of quick visual identification, red+rider+daemons should usually equal Bloodcrushers.

I actually love the rider and how you made him but i agree he doesn't fit with the army's theme and addmitedly makes the model look a bit cluttered. I like the idea of the guardsman attached to the torso as well.

For the legs I would do them gorilla style I believe that would really work with the strong robotic monster minion look you have going.

This is a great army one of the best I have ever seen. Keep up the stellar work

theme wise, I have to say that it still feels right to me - as the army becomes further and further damned denizens of the warp are starting to manifest and making their machinations less subtle. It has the feel of an evolving and growing storyline within the army and the aesthetic to me (which is something that I rather enjoy).

SOmething feels way too khornesque with the rider, and far less tzeenchian/khorne like your thirster and princes. I love the ambiguity of the ladder, in that they look like a very comfortable combination of the two ruinous powers. This on the other hand crosses over for me. First, I have to agree that I would ditch the sentinal legs and the bloodletter rider.

I would think bloodcrushers in this army, would be better suited as either possessed rough riders, or possessed ogryns, though I am leaning more towards the rough riders because you would then automatically make the connection of a mounted unit and could work in some blazing corrupted gaurdsman on nightmare horses or something, which would just be freaking amazing!

Some food for thought...

I was one asking about a rider, so I'm happy you tried it, for I think it definitely helps branding your daemon as a Bloodcrusher.

Still, two points of view stand out: keep up with IG rider or bring on the Bloodletters?

Somnicide wrote:as the army becomes further and further damned denizens of the warp are starting to manifest and making their machinations less subtle.

I think Somnicide has a point.

So to me, it's up to you.

Should you try and push that way, it seems quite obvious that Bloodcrushers will only appear once the whole army has grown enough in influence and strength. So "cannon" Bloodletters are not out-of-place!

Should you stick to your previous minis, a more human rider would be better... maybe something close to your objective markers, or something inspired by Dragonlover's idea?

Anyway great work as usual...

DorkaMorka (my gaming club) just wrapped up its Fall League, which saw the Harrowed mustered in all its hideous glory:

The minions of Tzeentch materialized in mysterious, myriad wonder:

And, of course, the war slaves of Khorne, Nurgle, and Slaanesh also marshaled for the campaign:

(Sorry about the blurry pictures.)

The League finals offered the Flamers their first chance for glory in their fully-painted form:

My fortunes on the field of battle waxed and (mostly) waned, I'm afraid.

But my fellow league players did judge the army pretty enough for distinction:

Best Painted! I'm not entirely sure I deserved the award. There were some highly skilled, gloriously and meticulously decorated armies in the group. But I think the Harrowed's weirdness, its over-the-top (if somewhat messily painted) grotesqueness did have its fans. Which was very gratifying.
