Bloodcrusher mfr
Well, here and on other sites I collected a lot of advice on whether to model the bloodcrushers with riders or no. Suggestions flooded in, a number of them thoroughly intriguing. Nothing like a consensus emerged – but I’m not entirely sure I wanted one, to be perfectly frank, since I’d probably resist it if I were feeling differently anyway. :p
I myself remain ambivalent.
So, in the interest of keeping things moving, I’ve concentrated on working on the main part of the beast – the juggernaut creature.
What I may end up doing is putting a rider on one of the beasts, and sending the others along riderless.
Or not.
Either way, the beast itself has been taking form.
I affixed cables and wires, and added a few other Dark Adeptus-looking appendages:
And, from another angle:
I decided against power claws, by the way, since bloodcrushers wield hellblades (power weapons, but only strength 5), and I didn’t want opponents to be confused on that score.
After putting it down for awhile, I picked it back up, looked it over….
And added more ornamentation:
And, from another angle:
And:
Then I began working in some greenstuff:
… because it wouldn’t be tinfoil, it wouldn’t be Harrowed, without greenstuff, right?
It still looks kind of messy:
Yep, I do some cleaning up here and there:
I think I’ll end up scraping off a few of the fiddly greenstuff patches
But it’s starting to get there, I think
I do need to come up with something for feet. Originally I was thinking cloven hooves, but I don’t have much room to work with.
Once I figure that part out, I’ll work on the rider, basing it off of a bloodletter figure, but one carved up a bit so that he resembles my other bloodletters.
Let me know what you think.

You frightening man! It's a shame you can't mass produce some of your stuff and sell it! I would really love to have some daemons like that! Perhaps I should try to get some sculptors to indoctrinate themselves with your work or something!
What about some very technical looking flying stuff? I can see some sort of daemonic/mechanical flying platforms functioning as Disks of Tzeentch, or some sort of daemonic jetbikes as Seekers of Slaanesh.

Sweet, that is downright awesome. I love the cabling, nicely done.
As for the feet, cloven hooves sounds interesting, and it's supposed to be a counts-as bloodcrusher unit anyway so it makes sense. If you don't like that then how about clawed feet, it would match the bloodthirster wouldn't it?

I would like to thank you for creating this army, as it has inspired me to make a daemon army in a similar vien (as soon as I'm finished with my nids, of course!) The idea would be that a SMurf company was sent out to "purify" a hiveworld recently captured by nurgle. None came back. Now there is a new menace, a daemonic warhost possesing the rotting corpses of Ultramarines!
If you can't tell, my #1 opponent plays the SMurfs, and his least favorite daemon god is (but my most favorite) is Nurgle.

Woo, nice stuff in the works.
All the those claws and tenticles in his groan area make me wonder if his str 6 power weapon is really a humping attack
I think it looks nice without the rider, but I think it would look more like the unit with something done that's rider-esque...if at least to have concrete footing that these are bloodcrushers at first glance from those who don't know.
Hmmm, how about:
A prisoner/mutated thingy? A rider ‘attached’/melted into the crusher?
How about like a Dark Adept/soul/body attached a la the Tomb Scorpion mummy on its back? Or like the penitent engine rider.
Mmm, how about a mini charnel or brazier? A brazier with souls coming out as the smoke… or just smoke/coal/etc.
How about a rider made up of tentacles, or more accurately tentacles forming a sort of body that looks like a rider?
Just some random ideas.
From the pics it look a little bit tilted too lowish…not sure though.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Congratulations on a well deserved award! Sometimes creative vision trumps clean brush strokes as the overall impression is greater - which is clearly the case here.

Thanks for the kind words, and all of the ideas.
A few more spasms of greenstuffing have more or less brought the first bloodcrusher to the point of being paint-ready.
I ended up doing a lot with the legs and feet of the creature:
In fact, I think I may have gotten a little carried away:
But I figure, this project has been all about excess from the very beginning. Why restrain myself now?
I'm hoping the whole thing will cohere a bit more once I've painted the beast.
I still have some cleaning up to do on this, before I prime it. But it's close now.
Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody.
Both work and family stuff have been keeping me pretty busy, lately, but I have made modest progress on Things Daemonic, meriting a modest update.
With the Bloodcrusher prototype established, I've begun fashioning bloodcrushing brethren -- three more of them, in fact:
You can see that I've raided a few models from an earlier project for bitz, ripping apart two sentinels from my LatD army (*sigh). Those earlier iterations were not all that great as conversions, and pretty poorly painted, too. I'm hoping their resurrection here will end more impressively.
After getting the "legs and hips" done, I grafted on torsos, and began working on the joins:
Some details:
and
and
(As you can see, I am trying out a kind of Miyazaki effect on the feet. That part is subject to change.)
These are still very much WIP, of course. Even the hips and feet are only like halfway done.
Meanwhile, I've also been making headway on the Corrupted City terrain:
I really like the way those Spawn heads work into things. Particularly with a bit of greenstuff:
And (from the coolest angle)
Freaky.
Another wall of the Possessed Imperial (No Longer) Shrine:
And looking up (in horror and helpless fascination):
There's still a long way to go on those, but they're starting to look characterful, I think.
edit: couldn't resist adding a picture I took a few weeks ago of the flamers:
Something about that shot really captures what I was trying to do with those conversions.

I see you are continuing to pump out amazing work, not surprising
Keep the red flesh! It immediately renders the Bloodcrushers recognizable, even without a demon rider. I love it. The rest of the gang are shaping up well, as expected.
Also: the scenery is fantastic, coming along very nicely. I love the small tendrils spiraling up the bars around the window. I'd suggest keeping those small and thin, gives a very sinister look, and a feeling of movement.
Keep up the great work!

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Maddening Mutant Boss of Chaos
|
The Bloodcrushers lurch forward, fitfully but fatefully. I’ve spent a series of evenings working in layers of tendrils, tissue, and dark adeptus augmentation, a little bit at a time. Legs, torsos and heads are nearly done.
I went back and forth on what heads to give the creatures. The prototype featured the head from the chaos mutation sprue, ripping itself in two. Which provided nice character and the right proportion for the beast. Wanting to give the new ones some variety, I tried other solutions, but nothing really suited. I needed that extra bit of scale, and that evocation of pain and despair that the original head so nicely expressed. In the end I decided to duplicate (actually, triplicate) the conversion, altering the angle enough (hopefully) to create some differentiation.
I’ve refined the solution for the lower torso/crotch/hips sections. In place of bristling horns and tusks, I’m trying cables surrounded by more modest maw claws:
I like this effect more.
It just feels more in keeping with the anatomy/ecology of the thing. (I don’t know how or why specifically – it just “feels right.”)
Maybe my favorite take on the mutated head idea was “Tube-mouth” (I know this looks messy now, but I will be cleaning him up.)
Here’s Tube-mouth guy, from the side:
On one of the heads, I did try a little more ambitious work, splitting the two sides of the head, setting them a bit farther apart, and greenstuffing in additional ripping, splitting viscera. The effect wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for…
The scale was so tiny that with my limited sculpting skills, I couldn’t really get in there and work very prettily. But I suppose in the end, “ugly and ripped up” should at least help set the mood.
So there we are. As I said, I do have a bit of cleaning up to do. Then I’ll start working on the arms.
Thanks for looking.

Those are pewter cables from Dragonforge. http://www.dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/sculpting_supplies.htm They're much easier to work with than guitar strings -- softer and easier to bend in rounded curves. Highly recommended.
