This is a mostly serious question. I'm supposed to be making an informative website about just about anything and, realizing that since most of us live in basements or under rocks, it's time to put on some SPF 50 and trot 40k out into the sunlight of my peers' attention.

If you post something, please also write some small blurb saying "I give Lord PoPo permission to use what I've said" so that I can adhere to my teachers strange insistence that I don't break any intellectual property laws.

Thank you for your time

I like 40k, primarily for the background.

So I say for the background, it's so big!

I love the great variety it offers to different people.
You like painting tiny men? We got that.
You like pushing tiny men around an imaginary battlefield and making gun noises? We got that.
You like reading/writing epic stories of epic proportions across epically large epic battlefields (did I mention it was epic?)? We got that.

Whether you want to devote your entire life to 40k and get a Khorne tattoo on your back, or you just want something to do on a saturday, 40k can be equally fulfilling for all kinds of people.

Lord PoPo can use what I have said.

I'm involved with 40k because of a mixture of a few things.

I love the background to the 40k universe - perpetual war and all that grim dark stuff.

I also love the models. Although they are expensive I think overall they are really good quality.

I love being able to change some of them by converting and also like to paint them. It gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing - I did that!

I also love wargaming and trying my skills and luck against another person as immersed in this hobby as me.

So to summarise it's a collection of hobbies all rolled into one.

Lord PoPo has my permission to use this.

My reasons are twofold:

Firstly I like the rich background that's been created over the years, it gives a real sense of history and back story to the races and factions. So many settings lack any real depth and as a result any believability (for want of a better word). It has an unashamedly bleak tone which is oddly refreshing in a way. No-one need worry about the future because we're all going to die!

Secondly, because of it's popularity it's comparatively well supported by GW meaning there are plenty of models/kits/bits to paint and model with. I may not like all the different ranges but the variety of styles is what makes it interesting.

Oh, and do whatever you like with this.

I don't actually really know why i play 40k over any other system (even over the other two main GW systems....) i prefer LOTR background (LOTR was reason i got into 40k.....), like more fantasy models than i do 40k (only reason i don't have a fantasy army, is because i can't decide which one i like the most )

But i still only play 40k...(although if i could find people playing LOTR, i would play that just as much)

I like making lots of lists, reading the background (it is pretty interesting), playing games....

All of that i could probably do in another game, but for now 40k is what i play
(I do like it......)

I like 40k mainly for the background. I think I had too much Star Trek and Star Wars growing up, so I have a hard time standing the clean cut line between good and evil, and the idea that the future will bring nothing but peace and prosperity.

I mean, c'mon....the grim darkness of the Imperium of Man is about 20x more interesting that the pure communist utopia of the Federation in ST or the clear cut good and evil in the original SW.

Plus I just like collecting the models....fear my swarm of Imperial Guardsmen!

I like everything about 40K, The background is rich and interesting (despite being contradictory). The modelling and painting is probably my favourite aspect of the hobby, its a shame I lack the time to do it as much as I'd like. Playing the actual game is pretty much the only opportunity I get to see a lot of my old friends from when I was back at school, I enjoy the tactical aspects of the game (and how fun it can be when it all goes wrong! HOW CAN I ROLL THAT MANY 1'S!!!).

I'm happy for Lord PoPo to use this and politely suggest his teacher calms down about the "intellectual property" of people rambling on forums

I like 40K primarily because it's a great way to socialise with friends.

I enjoy board games and role-playing games but 40K is more than that, it's also a hobby. I like how the game encourages players to be creative when modelling and painting their models.

The fact that 40K also has a rich, detailed, varied and fun background and excellent models also helps. I also find the cost of Games Workshop models very reasonable for what you get compared to similar products on the market.

As a hobby I enjoy the company of fellow gamers (I've made at least half my friends through our local club), and the socialisation that takes place there. It's good have a game with people you enjoy yourself with.

Why I chose 40k in particular? Well, funnily enough I enjoy 40k not becuase of the monstrosities and aliens and other amazingly 'out there' superbeings. It's the humanity that's caught up in all of it, hanging on by the edge of it's fingernails, that appeals to me, at least in fluff terms. I'd never consider playing or founding an alien race or traitor legion becuase they are inimicial to human life. I don't know, I just have a 'Go Team' mentality.
In game terms I like pitching normal human beings against superior opponents and seeing them win through. 40k appealed to me over fantasy becuase fantasy appeared so wooden and formented (although I'm now considering an Empire Army . Perhaps I would have chosen a different game altogether if GW wasn't so prevalent. Even if I did however, I would side with humans. I do with with the few video games I have as well, always trying to finish the Human Campaign before anything else, hoping that the 'people' not the 'tentacle-people' win out. I do my best to be on the human side (even if they doesn't necessarily mean good). Maybe that's faith in humanity, maybe that's some sort of xenophobia. Whatever, have fun with that little rant, mate.

I like 40k as a social game. Gather around with some friends, play a game over 4 or so hours, eating drinking and talking along the way. It's a great way to catch up with my friends and not be forced into a particularly focussed activity.

I also really like all the fluff that I've read so far, and the mental images I receive from reading stories of 40k give me inspiration to write myself.

I like Warhammer 40k because it is just a fun and creative game.
I love the fact that it justifies a grown man to play with toys again.
With a very small joke aside; I absolutly love the fact that the modeling and painting aspect lets you be so artistically free and have complete control.
The story behind the races and how it all began, the massive battles, artistic freedom is what keeps me playing.

I love all types of dystopian future fiction. And 40k has that and grimdarkness in bucketloads. Whilst most of the concepts and themes in 40k might not be original. The way they have been combined makes for an interesting setting to play tabletop and pen and paper games from.

Beacause it's an escape from my everday existence, The realities of military life are far different than the fictional Grim-Darkness painted by GW, thus it's an island of solace in the sea of insanity I inhabit. That should tell you something, when an individual finds escape in a storyline filled with more atrocities and horror than the sum total of our entire history as a species.

This is a fascinating question that my friend and I were discussing recently.

Summarily, there doesn't seem to be one particular reason. It appears to be just the right combination of rule ambiguity that leaves for game surprises, it has a very tactile feel to it by rolling so many dice and offers an excellent backstory (reason for playing) and unique visual athestic. Other games have outshined 40K in one or even two areas, but no other game has ever nailed that "perfect ratio" like 40K has.

Do with this post what you will! So sayeth the Emperor of Mankind!

I like the background, and the models. As a game, the fact that it is popular means that it is probably the easiest minatures game to find an opponent for, especially when you move as much as I do.

This idea of a "tactile feel" being a positive aspect of gameplay itself is one I hadn't even come close to thinking of. I think this is a very interesting point.

When you fire a Str 7 ap 3 Gatling, Large blast, Rending, Assault four gun... Do you want to be rolling a few dice to determine the outcome of that poor space marine army caught on open ground?

FETH no!. You want to savor every. single. kill you make as you decimate your foe.

40k has always been about the great story writing to me. it's a story you can get involved in. a story with ambiguity and gray areas for you to have conspiracy theories over. It's got just enough magic missiles to remind me it's not reality and at the same time bring all the fantasy into That reality. You can draw references from everything in your life to it, and just about every aspect of humanity is covered in the pages of GW's canon & literature. So above any other wargames (including historicals) I have to say that 40k gives all my crazy thoughts a place to belong and a medium (plastic models and greenstuff!) to express my ideas and make them manifest!

Quote me if you like! I'm posting on a public forum where anything i have said can be quoted and repeated without my knowledge so i'm not certain you need to be given permission!

We love what we love. Reason does not enter into it. In many ways, unwise love is the truest love. Anyone can love a thing because. That's as easy as putting a penny in your pocket. But to love something despite. To know the flaws and love them too. That is rare and pure and perfect.

Sitting on the roof of my house with a shotgun, and a six pack of beers

The thing that first attracted me to 40k was the fluff, I like the history it so large and detailed you can lose yourself in it. I liked the grimdark future in portrayed it was so different to anything i'd read before. The use of real life themes and events give it a grounded and relatable feel.

However once I bought my first box of minatures I was hooked on them. 40k gives back more than any other hobby i've ever had, the sense of achievement I get from modelling, painting and collecting let alone playing is huge. No computer game or anime could compete with it. I'm not a big fan of painting when I started I found it hard and it takes so long but i can't help but get a little excited when i line up all my troops on the dinning room table and they look like a unified force.

I also now feel like part of a commuity, i've met a lot of nice people through the hobby both on Dakka and in real life.

I'm a big fan of the fluff. I think the W40K universe is the richest fictional setting I've come across.
Now that I've gotten into the miniatures, I'm enjoying the modeling and converting aspects a lot. It's something productive that allows me to take an idea in my head and make it come to life. Plus, it's something to keep my hands busy with while I'm watching movies or tv episodes on my computer.

I had always been interested in Warhammer 40k, but I always found it to be a little daunting to get into. Everything was so expensive and the rules seem so complicated. That and you had to assemble/paint everything and I remember hating putting car models together as a kid.

What helped a little were the Dawn of War computer games. It seemed like a lot of fun so I assumed the table top game would be a blast too. I'm a veteran of D&D and other RPGs as well as a lot of video games. I also had a job that could support the hobby.

So last winter I decided to take the plunge and buy the Assault on Black Reach boxed set. I was overwhelmed, but not in a bad way. All the assembly, painting, fluff and more just blew my mind. I loved it! I soon got more and more and more. I loved the hobby so much, I didnt even care about playing until a few months ago. Now that I play, it's become that much better.

Thats pretty much where I am now. I enjoy the hobby, the game, and everything in between. The hobby is great because it really encourages artistic thought in people where there was none before and it allows for a great deal of customization. The game is great because it makes you think. It's really hard to just "run and gun" or something like that. It really provokes thought, something woefully absent in today's youth.
